PSG vs Man Utd | Build-up Thread | Return leg Wednesday 06.03

You could make the same point about United. It's possible, but is it likely? Bayern's problems didn't come out of thin air, their squad has some weaknesses and Kovac seems out of his depth tactically and also appears to have influental parts of the squad against him.
Things have been better recently? Or it's just papering over cracks?

my own predictions:

Atletico-Juventus 50%-50%
Roma-Porto 50%-50%
Manchester United-PSG 35%-65%
Liverpool-Bayern 50%-50%
Ajax-Real Madrid 35%-65%
Tottenham-Borussia Dortmund 50%-50%
Schalke-Manchester City 20%-80%
Lyon-Barcelona 45%-55%
How did you arrive at this? Barcelona is one of the favourites and Lyon is arguably the second weakest team in the competition.

To be fair, Guardiola said that Lyon has been one of their toughest opponents so far this season. Maybe that's swayed his %.

Agreed, although Lyon has come through tough times in terms of quality and playing in PSGs shadow domestically, they have improved but - Barcelona should be at least 55%. I'd go 65% - 35% to Barcelona over two legs.

One of the Bayern fans can probably give you a better answer. But I'd say it's the latter. Nürnberg and Hannover don't deserve to be in Bundesliga at the moment. The former even got battered by Schalke. Beating them means nothing, even if it's by three or four goals. If you take the 3:3 against Düsseldorf as a benchmark then they have probably improved, but that doesn't mean much. Their next two games before the winter break are against Leipzig and Frankfurt, if they beat both convincingly then you can begin to think about putting them on the track to recovery.
But in the end youth won't come back to Ribery/Robben, they likely won't be able to buy/afford a top class wide man midseason and Kovac won't learn how to create and protect a dominant force.

I agree with the sentiment that Liverpool is a favorite over Bayern atm, but that is mostly down to the manager. Which is of course of utmost importance.

Neuer
Kimmich - Boateng - Süle - Alaba
Thiago - Goretzka
Gnabry - James - Coman
Lewandowski

This team can beat anyone on a good day, so no way it should be more than 60:40 in favor of Liverpool.

Could of been worse. PSG will slap us though, our full backs won’t be able to handle Mbappe or Neymar.

Any chance Robbery will be fit and available? Haven’t watched a lot of Bayern, so not sure who their preferred starting XI is.

I left out Hummels, Ribery, Robben, Müller, Martinez since they would not make my starting XI. Tolisso will probably still be out, but as of today everybody is available. There’s also the winter break.

Thanks Acrobat. Anyone who’s going to make Bayern’s chances of progressing better, I hope is available.

We have as much chance to beat PSG as Ajax has to beat Madrid or Schalke City.

Being realistic those two games will be the last in UCL until 2020.

Probably true, I'll give it about 25% chance we go to the next round.

Gl to both of us then.

Thanks all for those who replied, I had no idea Bayern were that terrible. I was cautiously looking forward to it for other reasons; we've not met Bayern in a very long time! I'm a little more optimistic now.

they aren't 'that terrible'.

They still have an excellent team if everyone is fit (that can be a little bit of a problem), their coach may not be the level of the last one, but they certainly are not terrible.

Should be a great tie actually and a lot of their players where around when Kloppo was still at Dortmund, he'll know them very well already.

I’m quite happy with Bayern. We avoided Barca and Juventus, they are a massive club and not in the best shape (that could change, of course). We need to improve our away form, though.

Brilliant fixture list too, btw, as the best matches are on different dates.

Real won the CL while being worse than Bayern in the domestic league. Bayern are not bad at all if their star players are fit. No Muller is a bonus, he's been seriously poor.

This strikes me as a time we might pull something from our behinds and produce a result.

Drag them down to our level, you know...

We were very very likely to be drawn against a top team in the round of 16 this season.PSG,Dortmund,Bayern,Barca,Real are all clearly better than us....But obviously on a given night, anything can happen and we do have the experience of getting that magical win in Turin this season. That win should give them a lot of confidence...

Why Barca and Madrid always manage to get an easy picks! It doesn't sound good.
Last year Real Madrid's road to the final was an absolute nightmare starting with PSG is the round of 16. The year before it might have been Napoli I think.

bookies betting now
psg 77% , utd 23%
Lpool 55% v 45%
City 92% v 8%
spurs 50% v 50%
juve 62% v 38%
barca 88% v 12%
porto 52% v 48%
madrid 82% v 18%

The last time we beat Real Madrid in the CL. Managed by a certain Louis van Gaal, Van der Sar on goal. Won the CL earlier that year, just a few days before winning the world cup for club teams. Those were the days...

Napoli has far better defensive system than Bayern. Actually I think Napoli in general are stronger than Bayern currently anyway.
Not sure about Bayern as I've seen very little of them this season but Napoli's defence isn't exactly brilliant, Koulibaly aside they're quite suspect.

I think Ajax will beat Madrid
It's certainly not out of the question, they have some very good players and seem to be quite underrated at the moment which may well work in their favour. I hope they go through, I've always had a soft spot for Ajax.

Would absolutely love to see a "smaller" club win it again, like Ajax did in the 90s before major money ruined the CL. Their team now is a fairly similar mix of young talent and experience.

We're still in the competition because we beat Inter at home and then dominated Barca at the Nou Camp. Inter should never have won at the San Siro in the first place and we were robbed of 3 points away to PSV by a wrongly disallowed goal.

We started off shite in the group (partly down to a severe injury crisis) and then improved and clearly deserved to qualify.

You can't claim to dominate a team and then draw 1 all with them. Messi was on the bench for most of the match also.

I watched Spurs v PSV and, in all honesty, Spurs laboured to beat one of the weakest teams in the CL. . . . leaving it very late.

Let's be honest. Everyone expected, probably even you, Inter to beat PSV, and has they done so then Spurs would be out.

But you got some luck and fair play.

We did dominate them though. We totally controlled the midfield, created plenty .. our only issue was being wasteful in the final third. We were in control of the game but our youth player fullback made an early error, it happens. You can dominate a match but still not win it, football can be like that.

We got incredibly unlucky to go 1 down vs PSV, dominated the game and created lots of chances and eventually 2 of them went in. And sure, everyone expected Inter to beat PSV but then I think the two best teams in the group stages went through. We outplayed Inter at the San Siro but they scraped two goals at the end from nothing, totally our own doing but they weren't impressive throughout. We got 'some luck' in the final game but were totally lacking luck in the early matches, so that balances it out.

If Spurs perform at the level they did against Juve last season, they'll be favourites against Dortmund imo. Juve were lucky to progress.
