That's unfair. They should simply be on one platform so I can feel unnecessarily superior for being able to play them while others can't
Yeah its mostly dead and gaming is much better for it. Pity about Nintendo

Oh is that the case? Didn't realise. To be honest I think the upgrade would be worth it as the quicker load times on these new consoles are an absolute joy
Oh I agree but the talk at the beginning of the generation was that Xbox having cross gen games for at least two years would hold back gaming. Now 2 years later PlayStation is still releasing their games on PS4. Nobody is saying anything.

Plenty of people have expressed their concern that the PS4 would hold back games like God of War Ragnarok.

Yeah loads on here (me included) were pissed that this and Horizon were cross gen.

and why would anyone not be? You spend €500 for a new console and its “exclusives” are still being released on ten year old hardware. Sadly it was always going to happen with these games, Sony won’t ignore one of the most successful consoles of all time while they struggle to get enough stock for the ps5.

not sure what excuse MS have, though, seeing as nobody owns an Xbone

Had a Series X since launch - found the whole next gen thing very underwhelming.

was my 40th yesterday and I now have a PS5 too - the controller is my first next gen experience - wow I love it! Astro Bots is a great game in its own right. Also prefer the UI (less ads!). Really happy

Such a weird flex when MS have released, what exactly? Maybe you'll eventually get coop Halo before the end of this console life cycle.

Isn't this versus over? XBox still haven't turned up yet...

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan is uninterested in making PS5 games run on PS4 hardware, stating that developers working on next-generation games should “make the most” of the new console’s advanced features.

Talking to GamesIndustry, Ryan said “We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.”

“We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used,” he said. “We are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."

2 years later....

Xbox never said they were going to drop Xbox One.

I just thought it would good to look back and see how well that turned out.

That quote doesn't prove what you think it proves. He's talking about next gen advancements with he controller and SSD, which all the cross generation games do take advantage of.

So, I'll ask again, what games have MS released this year?

That says exactly what I think it says. Add to that the games like Returnal and Demon Souls being console exclusives then saying that the AAA titles that were coming were going to be console exclusives until just before they were released and then doing a complete 180 and releasing them on PS4. Lying Jim Ryan is a snake oil salesman.

They announced very early Horizon and GoW were cross generation, it's because they were such a huge success on PS4 they were always planned and developed for the two consoles.

Don't make me ask the question a third time...

I mean it was a complete whataboutism so I'm not surprised he's ignoring it

it's a fair point though as MS has released jack shit since Psychonauts 2

Xboxs first party output has been awful this year. Finally started showing positive signs last year with a strong 12 months and then they lost all momentum.

Gamepass hasn't been as strong either.

Next year looks great but I'm expecting a few of those to slip into 2024.

They've had Grounded finally come out which is a great coop experience especially if you are playing with your children/grandchildren.

True but it's been very good the past two months - Persona 5, all the Amnesia games, A Plague Tale, Football Manager, Pentiment, Return to Monkey Island

Yeah definitely not as good as last year but I’ve still played quite a few gamepass games this year. Plague Tale and Scorn most recently

Apart from Starfield what’s the big hope for next year? It’s crazy how Bethesda don’t have more games planned like a new Doom or Wolfenstein

We've been saying that for years.
To be fair Xbox ended the last gen with only 5 studios. It's been taking for the new studios to get into full production. especially because Xbox wants them to up the scope on the games they were making.

Plague Tale was excellent again the fact that I got to play both games on gamepass was an added boost.

It's Jim Ryan, what do you expect? No one should ever listen to a word that man says. He cares about business and nothing else. Certainly not about games or gamers. Does anyone even like him, except shareholders?

"Next year looks great!" (followed by an immediate backtracking..."oh but I'm expecting some to slip until the year after")

Might as well end that with a 'la!

But in all seriousness, yeah this generation has been a bust so far. But it's a joke to claim people only cared about the X being held back by the previous gen, both sides have felt that and plenty of people have moaned about it. Difference is moving forward, the PS5 might shed the shackles of the PS4, but the X can't escape the S.

In all honesty the S isn't the bottle neck that people make it out to be. Ever since PC gaming became a thing Devs have had to be able to make graphics and FPS adjustable so as not to lose those playing on budget pc's or those playing on high end pcs.
Truth be told all consoles will be held back at the moment by budget pcs because once dev teams get their heads around the consoles they will be able to run games to a high standard on all of them but can't give a budget pc an SSD and no one wants to make a game that can't be ported to PC.

 That whole post could not possibly be the exact opposite of reality any more than it is! I would go into it, but I'm not going to bite ;)

Yeah it's finally got a completable story as well.

Great to know, thanks mate. It always had potential, somehow I missed full release.

There are ads on Xbox?

Next year is our year?

One of the dumbest things I've read in a while in here, well done.

The series S is nowhere near as far behind the X as a 1080 is behind a 4080. It's just a fact.
The S is a bottleneck to anyone wanting to make Series X games in the same way the PS4 is to the PS5. The difference is the PS4 doesn't need to be supported for the entire generation and will eventually become unsupported. And Sony haven't made it mandatory to do so.

PC is completely irrelevant and the idea that Sony exclusives are made with eventual PC porting in mind is fecking hilarious given they've only recently started doing it and there have been numerous issues with bad ports (Horizon) that shows they clearly weren't built with PC in mind.

If anything PC gaming is the one that constantly drives graphical capabilities forward because developers aren't hampered by the hardware, they get shiny new graphics cards every year or two years that enable them to beef up graphics. RTX came to PC yeeears before it came to PS or Xbox.

You're actually looking at it the complete wrong way, the biggest problem for the industry making forward steps has been that it no longer makes sense to make PC only games anymore and most devs have to also make their games for the consoles to rake in the money they bring. It's consoles holding things back, not PC.

I don't think you understand how hardware works.

The S is a massive bottleneck and will remain an albatross around MS neck throughout the generation.

My point wasn't that PC will be holding consoles back but more that the difference between specs on PC proves that you can innovate at the top end while still producing games that will play on a budget machine. The fact that games have ran on budget machines while being as ground-breaking on top end machines proves that games can be made that straddle a massive range of architecture.
