Ps3 - the slim edition

I think for a lot of people it's clutter and the fact that when PS3 first launched, its ability to play PS2 games upscaled and smoothed was a bit bullet point. Sony even laughed at Microsoft for being crap at it. It's there own fault in a way because they set up this expectation with PS2 being backwards compatible with the original Playstation (the PS3 and PSP still are). They were clever with that though, as the PS1 hardware actually did a specific job in the PS2 when playing PS2 games, I/O and Audio stuff. The PS3 models that have the PS2 hardware inside them do not use that hardware when running PS3 software, it's only there for BC purposes, so when the machine was really expensive and they were not selling enough, they went on a major cost cutting drive, and the removal of PS2 hardware was one part of that.

I agree, people moaning about it are a bit silly, because if that is something really important to them, then they had the opportunity to have that. Strange thing is though, it's mainly those that moan about lack of PS2 BC that are the same people that moaned about the price of the PS3 when it had that feature. They only have themselves to blame. My PS3 is BC, but I never use it.

I think the biggest reason most people want the 60GB over all the other models is not so they can actualy use the extra features but so they can brag that they have the "better" PS3 to thier mates and such. I mean lets face it, who actualy plays PS2 or Xbox 1 games if they have a PS3 or 360? Very, very few I bet.

The odd thing is in early 2006 when the PS3 was delayed, I remember reading even on the BBC website where Ken Kutaragi was talking about BC and he was adamant that it would finally be done in software. He was chief designer of the thing and PS2, he must have known if it was possible or not. The excuse for PS2 hardware being in there at launch is that the software wasn't quite ready. Now, WTF has happened in the meantime is anybody's guess.

I would want BC. Just as there are some better games for the ps1 than the ps2 so there will be some better games for the ps2 than the ps3.

Improved power and graphics are both secondary when I'm looking to play a game, I want to play the best game regardless of platform. I'm lucky that I was given a ps2 when my brother got his ps3 and I'm just beginning to get into the wealth of great games it has. But if the more recent ps3 models were BC I would probably own one now and I could then pass the ps2 on to my nephew (without the decent games of course).

Anyway I'm intending to wait to see how the slim fares for the first 6 months or so, if there are no hardware problems then I'll try to pick one up for around £200. (the dollar Euro price discrepancy still pisses me off).

Don't know if this is of any use to anyone £229.99:ShopTo.Net: Video Games, Consoles Games, Accessories - Free Delivery in Uk - Orders before 5.30pm dispatched Same Day -

Only used the site a couple of times myself though.

I doubt that there will be any issues with it, the original model is built like a tank, and first impressions of this model suggest that it's whisper quiet.

Some people love taking things to bits.

BD drive is still much bigger than I thought it would be, and the fan no goes on top next to it. There's room in the future for them to significantly reduce the height of this again.

Also take note that the power supply is still universal.

It gets interesting now, Microsoft has been pushed.

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 27, 2009 — Xbox 360 today invites you to experience more fun, more entertainment and more ways to connect with friends and family at an even better value. Beginning Aug. 28, the price of an Xbox 360 Elite console will drop by $100, now priced at just $299.99 estimated retail price (ERP) in the United States. On top of that, the Xbox 360 Pro console will now be priced at $249.99 (ERP), reflecting a price reduction of $50, while supplies last. Starting at just $199.99 (ERP) for the Xbox 360 Arcade console, Xbox 360 puts all your entertainment in one place so you can play games, watch movies and TV shows, listen to music, and, coming this fall, keep up with your Twitter and Facebook social circles, all from your Xbox 360.1 And, as announced earlier this year, the Xbox 360 you buy today will work with code-named “Project Natal” and controller-free gaming in the future.

I remember the Mega (sega) CD. Was meant to be next big thing. One of the 1st nails in the Sega console coffin. Was it ever even released in Europe?

Was that playstation (Play Station) ever released?

No.

During the SNES's life, Nintendo contracted with two different companies to develop a CD-ROM-based peripheral for the console to compete with Sega's CD-ROM based addon, Sega CD. Ultimately, negotiations with both Sony and Philips fell through, and Sony went on to develop its own console based on its initial dealings with Nintendo (the PlayStation), with Philips gaining the right to release a series of titles based on Nintendo franchises for its CD-i multimedia player

I vaguely remember talk of the Sony add on to the SNES. I am pretty sure Nintendo were kicking themselves for not adopting it seeing as the PS 1 and 2 blew them out of the water as far as sales are concerned.

Although I always remained loyal to them and was one of the few who liked the N64 and the Gamecube

This bitch is selling, approx 50,000 first week UK, 40,000 France, 150,000 first week Japan, wouldn't surprise me if they shifted close to a million world wide in its first week out. Lets see if it can keep it up.

Oh god yeah it will. I recently bought a component cable for my PS2 and the quality difference between that and the old red yellow white jobby is immense. I can actually play it on my new tv now without it looking horribly out of focus.

PlayStation 3 best-selling next-gen game console in the Benelux

It goes well beyond expectations with the sales of the PlayStation 3. Since the price on August 19 this year, sales of the world's most complete entertainment quadrupled. This is the PlayStation 3 the best selling next-gen game console in the Benelux for the moment.

Since September 1st there is a new, slimmer and lighter PlayStation 3 available in the Netherlands for a suggested retail price of € 299. The computer entertainment system has a stylish look and has got a 120GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Besides playing games is the only PlayStation 3 game console in the Netherlands equipped with a Blu-ray player. With a stunning line-up, including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, the new PlayStation 3 offers a complete entertainment experience for young and old.

Hotcakes all over the show.

Wait, can I play my PS2 games on my PS3?

What else does it do? I know it has blu-ray and internets on it.

I really need to read the instructions. Can I download HD movies to it somehow?

The HDMI cable is only a pound on amazon anyways.

If you have a launch model, then yes, you can play PS and PS2 games on it.

It plays PS3 games.

The video download service in Europe starts in November. You can copy movies onto its hard disk and it will play them, or you can stream them over DLNA.

I'm going to buy PS3 tomorrow, but I don't really know whether to buy the old one or the new one?

I've read this thread and it seems like it doesn't really matter?

It doesn't matter at all unless you want one that plays PS2 games which are the older 60gb versions they dont make anymore.

I like my fat 80gb.

So if I can't get the 60gb version (I have a bunch of PS2 games) it comes down to personal preference about which one looks better?
