Ps3 - the slim edition

Why can you play DVDs in a region free manner with Windows? Because the restrictions are not done on the drive, they are in software. Everything under PS3 XMB/GameOS in terms of authentication is done by the Cell, it's not done by the drive.

Not DVDs son of Weaste but blu rays. The world has moved on since 2001. I want to play region A BRs on my PS3. But I can't. It's really pissing me off because I was going to order Criterion's Kurosawa collection. I hate you for telling me it was great. I hate you. I do. I really do.

BD/DVD, restrictions are the same.

As for the region limitations, that's a licence limitation of the Blu-Ray Association of which all of the large movie studios are members of. You can't legally produce a machine that doesn't follow those restrictions. Hacking the drive on the PS3 will not help, the drive is not doing the checks the firmware is, so until Mr Hotz and friends have a true exploit and can produce custom firmware, you're buggered, unless you run Linux, but then Sony have now removed that from all machines because of the escapades of Mr Hotz and his buddies.

Hang on. . . running Linux on my PS3 will make it possible for me to play region encoded BRs?

I'm not good at this techie stuff.

Won't be as good surely? What's the point of a BR player if I'm going to watch all the best BRs via a rip? Help me Weaste. It's all too complicated.

New model incoming ready for the price cut.

Retailer Receives Briefing on New PlayStation 3 Model

CECH-3000 model cuts power and weight, and makes a few external changes.

Posted on 06.20.2011 at 02:38, by Anoop Gantayat

First word of a new "CECH-3000" model PlayStation 3 surfaced earlier this month. Now a retailer, claiming to have received a briefing on the new model from Sony, has passed along some details.

The CECH-3000B is an updated 320 gigabyte system. It cuts power consumption from 230W to 200W, and cuts weight from 3.0kg to 2.6kg. There are also some external changes to the power and eject buttons, along with the removal of LED lamps, although the retailer report isn't clear about the specifics for this area.

Pricing remains the same as the current model. The new version will be shipped to retailers once current stock runs out.

Weaste, do you have a rough idea of when this the price cut will come into effect? Ironically, I was just about to buy another one before I read this topic.

I would guess September or so. As for the amount, that depends on how much they are making on the box and how much they want to risk losing after the price drop. If they can get it at $199 and 199 Sterling RRP, then sales should explode as it approaches that mass market price of 150. So the risk is, how are the losses on the hardware compensated for by the inevitable increase in the sale of software?

Bought a new Slim a couple weeks ago ffs!

At least they haven't announced a PS4.

Thanks, but I remember you telling me that they focus on a software business model and not so much the sales of hardware isnt it?

Yes, they have always been willing to take a loss on hardware until it reaches mass market price. The problem is getting both into some sort of equilibrium.

They have made significant losses on PS3 in terms of hardware so the figures show, but it's not that simple, because the big lossy components have driven profit in other sides of Sony as a whole. What I mean by this is that SCE buys components off other parts of Sony (such as the Blu-ray drive, disc pressing, Cell, etc.) and that other part of Sony records that as a profit. Microsoft work in a similar way, so every computer running Windows and Office in say the XBox division purchases the licences for those from the Windows division and the Business division, they don't simply get them for free. It's a cost to one and an income for the other.

I think of PS3 as the beta for the PS4, it's a demo, and PS4 will come out of the gate far far cheaper. They simply crammed too much new technology into the PS3, but come PS4 it will be mature and simply require a bit of beefing up here and there.

Weaste, if I remember correctly you said half a year ago the consoles will drop in price end of the year. What happened? :(

I keep on checking on Amazon and the price around January/February was £199, then around May I think it was £195 and as of today it's £189. What I meant was a drastic price drop really.

I am sure Weaste will be more accurate, but I am pretty sure they were more expensive than that at the start of the year. Around £249. The price drop to under £200 only occurred a few months ago, I think.

I do remember them being £249 but I think that was more than a year ago. Don't know. I'm in a predicament, either fixing my fat PS3 (not reading discs) for £79 and 6 months warranty, or buying a new slim one for £225 incl. 3 years warranty..

They did fall in price, PS3 was dropped by $50 just after E3. HDD sizes sort of skew the prices, but I recently saw a 320GB for less than €230. I've also seen a 320GB with all three Uncharted games for €270. You should be able to find a raw 320GB console in the UK for less than 200 quid.

Fix the fat one, sell it at a profit, buy a new slim.

They have an Uncharted 3 bundle going for $299 CDN. With the 320GB HD.

Might not be the right thread for this but I couldn't find a better one.

I need to get a ps3 shooting game, one where ya shoot the tele with a gun not use a controller, can someone throw some ideas my way please.

i have a fat PS3 still, starting to worry that one day its going to die on me. might consider getting a slim PS3 in the new year

You mean these types of jobbies?

You'll need some Move controllers and a Move compatible game like Killzone 3.

As for games, I don't know if this is a definitive list, but it's the best I can find.

Game List

As for Playstation Move, it's a Playstation Eye that can detect where the special controllers with the light on the end are. Then there are a few other bits and bobx, but it's basically this in form:

You don't need the controller option on the left (it's not required for all games anyway), you could just use your normal controller.

The guns are just plastic that you put the move controller into so it looks like a gun, but you could just point the controller at the screen.

I bought Sports Champions just for the ping pong. It's awesome.

Cheers for that weaste, much appreciated.

PS3 Controllers, I bought an Dual Shock 3 when they where only in Asia from Hong Kong for about 25 quid.

Why have they not gone down in price! (I know they have a little bit)
