Pro Evolution 2017

Never trust reviews with football games. It has been getting over 80 average on metacritic even back in 2013 when it was downright terrible game. FIFA is consistently over 80 and it had some very poor releases.

God Is A Geek - 10/10
So if my massive amassing of words hasn’t convinced you, let me put it plainly: PES 2017 is bloody incredible. It’s a football game that feels like football in every single way. From the tackles to the passing, to the close control, to the scoring of wonderful goals. It’s everything football is in reality and in dreams. I’ve always said that FIFA is the Match of the Day of football games: you only get the highlights, where as in PES you get everything. This couldn’t be truer for PES 2017, which really, really could be the greatest football game ever made.

PSU - 9.5/10
If PES 2016 was the best entry in around a decade, then PES 2017 is arguably among the greatest in the series full stop. With extra care and attention paid to improving on many of its predecessor’s strengths, as well as tweaking and fixing adhered to its issues, PES 2017 comes out of it as a fantastic football game.

Metro - 9/10
More a refinement than a revolution, but this builds on the achievements of last year’s game to ensure one of the finest sports games ever created. No matter how good Pro Evolution Soccer is, it will never outsell FIFA. Even when the series was in its prime, back in the PlayStation 2 days, and FIFA was at its lowest ebb, it was still never the biggest seller. So if the number one thing you look for in a football game is whether it has all the proper names and official kits then just continue on and buy FIFA 17 as usual. But if you care what the game actually plays like, and whether it’s a fun and accurate simulation of the real thing, then Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 has no equal.

Four Four Two - 4.5/5
8 years, 10 months, 20 days. That’s the time-span between the release of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 – Konami’s footballing nadir, in many fans’ eyes – to the day PES 2017 goes on sale. It’s been a long, mostly fallow period, but finally the misery is over. Building upon foundations laid with PES 2016, this is the best football game the Japanese developer has ever made. PES 2017’s general presentation could still do with work to keep up with FIFA (which we’ll review in around a fortnight’s time), but where it matters – out on the park – there’s very little to fault. This is a football game where you really get the sense that anything can happen, at any time, just like the real thing. Whether you’re a lapsed fan wanting to rekindle the series’ glory days or a FIFA die-hard seeking to expand your horizons, it’s as essential to the blossoming 2016/17 campaign as Jeff Stelling on a Saturday afternoon and £50 replica shirts you’ll only wear twice.

Not played footie games in years but I'm glad PES is back to getting great reviews.

True. However I don't think we've heard ''possibly the greatest football game ever made'' claims being wheeled out in a long while. A lot of reviews seem to be saying it. Then again in the user reviews you can see a few saying that you can score from pretty much anywhere once again, which is an instant put off. Also a lot of them seemed to have loved PES 16, which was pretty good gameplay wise but nowhere close to perfection. It was way too easy to score, tackling was a joke and the players still ran really weirdly.

Any option files to tie me over until we get something complete? Mainly just EPL names, emblems and kits.

I tried it yesterday with a friend. For some reason, the squad is not updated (no Pogba or Zlatan yet) but the scoring from everywhere is not true, the goal is surprisingly good. Sometimes yes you score a nice volley from outside but that's quite rare.

The skills buttons are also a bit different and the penalties are always hard to score (at least for me).

And the diagonal passes when you see someone free on the radar are... unbelievable. Literally.

You serious?

I made a decision never to buy PES again after last year's shambles with the transfer updates. Just mugging off the loyal fans of the game.

They will likely release squads around December again. And will still do it wrong.

Here I sat like an excited school kid waiting for the postman. Along he came...and walked right passed my house.

Go feck yourselves Royal Mail.

They did this last year and still missed plenty of transfers. Full update came only around December.

Last year was a laughing stock, except it wasn't funny. They say the squads will be fully updated to the end of the August transfer window so hopefully they've learned their lesson

Last year the first transfer update dropped in around October and was incorrect. The correct update came in November.

This year they have implemented a 'live update' feature, much like Fifa, so we should get weekly updates that will hopefully eliminate the problem in the future. Wouldn't be surprised if they botch something tomorrow though.

Ordered and getting delivered on Friday!

Just about completed my thesis (and thus studies for the past 2 years!)....so damn good times (ahead) indeed!
Perfect timing!

I went for the digital pre-order so will start downloading in 4 hours and 38 minutes :D

Aargh, I was keen, but I think I prefer a hard copy.

It's a bit more "mobile" when we play at a friend's (though he usually has his copy as well), but we can also trade our hard copies and get a bit of a discount on the next purchase.

Got mine today, servers aren't working yet though so only played a few games and did training skills, waiting for squad updates and option file before playing properly

Anyone know when we are getting the Dortmund stadium and anfield?

@amolbhatia50k have you started your download?

I'm getting mine delivered to work tomorrow. The missus is working this weekend, so I'll give it a proper bash and report back Monday!

Can't wait. Will install the option file first thing as well. Never did the option file in '16.

Option file installing is brilliant. Installation process takes about 15 minutes but it only takes about 3 or 4 button presses to get it installing. The rest of the magic is done for you. Go make a cup of tea and enjoy a fully patched game when you are done.

Tempted to get this today in the anticipation of tomorrow's NBA 2K17 release. I know I'll probably like it for the first few days and then hate it when all the issues start coming up but I could probably trade it for FIFA 17 in two weeks no problem.

So I gave the demo some gametime earlier in the week and while I actually enjoyed the gameplay I could not get on with the camera angles at all, felt like I spent more time trying to adjust the camera than actually playing the game. I felt like I'd exhausted every possible setting and still wasn't happy with it. Shame really because I was enjoying the gameplay but really struggled to not concentrate on the camera angle.

Also, I played one game with United yesterday and even before the regular roster (and hopefully stats) updates, Rashford seems quite handy. Going to be lots of pace up front with him and Martial.

Played this for a couple hours and as far as I'm concerned it's the best football game I've ever played. Scoring a goal is so satisfying, and the tactics and style of play actually matters. Star players feel noticeably different to poor players. I personally don't give a shit about the lack of licenses and the crap commentary as I mute it and crank up the volume on my rock 'n roll playlist. I'll be wasting a few hundred hours of my life on this.

Not used to playing PES, but is it always so incredibly easy to score long range goals? I think I scored 5 goals from 30m ++ in the last game I played..

Also, did they remove the 'diving'-option? :(

'keepers were awful in PES16 which made it easy to score long range goals. They've been significantly improved in PES17.

Another thing I love is that sometimes when one of your attackers score a goal, the AI will pick a player to start man marking them (the commentary usually indicates this for you).

Love the added touch of being able to decide to take your jersey off when celebrating - and the little yellow card warning it comes with. Nice touch.

Having played both this and the FIFA demos, there's only one winner. Will be buying PES in the next few days.

@Burrow what level are you playing on?

Should I buy this or Fifa? I usually do pro clubs on Fifa.

I can't get to grips with breaking down a defence on PES against the CPU, is this worth buying over Fifa though?

Not to put a dampener but the same reviewer gave a 10/10 for last year's version too  and here is a snippet:

Sure, it doesn’t have all the licenses, but on the pitch, where it actually matters, PES 2016 is phenomenal. You’ll have a day off from playing it and forget, but then return and remember how truly special it feels to just play football. It’s the best football game I’ve played in as long as I can remember (and I’ve just about played them all), and an utterly essential purchase. PES 2016 is the best there is, and the best there’s been in a very long time. How crazy it is to think that Konami has made the two best games of 2015.

How does the Option File work? From descriptions it's again something that will take hours to get fully done as you have to change team after team? I thought it's download one file and everything gets done automatically, not mess like this.

You don't have to do anything per team. You just pick an option to import teams and select everything included with the option file, then wait it out while the game does all the work for you.

The only real manual labour you will need to do is update competition logos and names yourself.

Really? I don't care about competition logos so it seems like all can be done in a few minutes. I'll probably pick this up after work. NBA 2K17 is going to destroy this tomorrow but what the hell.
