The rules don't say what "intent" means. The decision falls at the hands of the referee on whether a player's handball is considered on purpose, or not. Typically, penalties are awarded when a player deflects the ball with his hand while his hand is far from his body. In the case of Otamendi (I think) his hand wasn't close to his body and whether that is on purpose is entirely up to debate. The point is: he deflected the ball while his hands weren't close to his body, hence most referee's would have awarded the pen right then and there. The rules state you need intent and/or your arm to move toward the ball for a peno to be given. Never a pen.
It should tell you something when even Souness, a Liverpool legend and a guy that probably hates us, said so himself.
I'm not saying that it was a 100% penalty, however considering that he didn't even give us a clear penalty and a red card for Bravo's challenge on Rooney, I think we deserved it anyway.
Common sense. Unless you can provide evidence of where the 4th game of a season decided the outcome some 35 odd games later.
Every game decides what your points will be at the end of the season. If we finish 2 points behind City, this game would have won us the title. I don't need to give you any examples, it's common sense. In the past few years we've lost the title by 1 or 2 points, sometimes on a goal difference. Every game counts here.
Aside from that, my original point is simple: we should have had a clear cut penalty and a red card for Bravo. We didn't and that may well cost us - be it a title or a top 4 finish, doesn't matter.
