Premier League Festive Season

Weak penalty decision, Mahrez went down like he was shot - he stepped on him but the contact was so exaggerated
Weak penalty by Sterling, weak by the ref asking for a retake, weak retake - hope Wolves turn them over.

Wolves forget they are 1 man up. Not playing well - good.

The sending off was fair, Jota would have scored if not for Ederson's foul.

The penalty was very very soft, I'd be fuming if it got given against us

The retake, I don't know, Bernardo was the player furthest forward, but there was a Wolves player in the box also

Overall City are incredibly lucky to be ahead here.
It was a foul as the defender stood on his foot. Nothing soft about it, he just committed a foul and was rightly penalised for it

The only luck they've had is the 2nd pen came straight out to Sterling

City are worth this lead, they've been by far the better side

So there was actual contact, even if it was ‘soft’, and there was Wolves players in the box during the penalty...

Both correct decisions then.

It looks like they are loosening the restrictions on overturning on field decisions in the Premier League, at last. Been a fair few big decisions in recent weeks that VAR would have totally ignored at the start of the season to protect the on field ref.
Yeah if this was the start still, Atkinson's decision would have stood. They've made a mockery of the league this season, as matches would have different results if Var was allowed to intervene the way it does now. We wouldn't have lost to Palace at the start for one.

If that was Liverpool people would be going mad.

Against Leicester at Anfield, Mane got a penalty for the exact same amount of contact.

So did United against Norwich.

Soft penalties have been a thing for years. Encroachment is a very clear rule in football, has been for years but referees haven't been able to properly enforce it. VAR allows them to enforce it.

Mahrez definitely dives in the sense that he exaggerates the contact- there is no way you would naturally fall by jumping like that and lifting both of your feet off the air. It is still a penalty since the player fully steps on his foot. Players today exaggerate every contact so I always find it interesting when players are labelled as divers since imo they are all divers. Similar with the Liverpoom penalty in the first game against Leicester - regardless of how Mane falls, it was an obvious penalty as he is kicked in the back of the leg.

the problem is this behavior is incentivized by the refs. If he had not gone down there and tried to recover the ball, the penalty wouldn't have been given either by the ref or VAR. We've seen this for many years now.

This! Blame the refs, not the players.

Wolves are such a shithouse team. They just have a few good players to edge games for them here and there.

Citys style is useless for 10 men. They arent direct enough for it and playing it out normally exposes them.
They could get pegged in as the game progresses

Contact doesn't automatically mean foul, that's why there's nuance in contact. To me it was soft AF, and I wouldn't have given it.
