Yeah, I think that makes sense. The 'value' in the draft is probably mostly away from Liverpool (as the most successful and recognised team of the era) and United (where despite winning little, the competition for draft players is always tough). It's a similar picture with England holding most of the higher-profile talent despite struggling internationally for much of the 70s and early 80s, while the other home nations had windows of relative success owing to small hotspots of quality here and there.

Aye. Despite the lack of success on the international stage, English teams were doing pretty good in Europe. There was more quality spread equally between the sides and if you look at purely the titles it might seem that Liverpool were almost everytime walking away with it but they usually won it by point or 2 in the 70's and Derby, Arsenal, Leeds, Man City, United - all were challenging and usually within striking distance to the leaders. Liverpool's success mainly was the sum of parts(as it has been already mentioned in the thread) and the managers that took over - Shankly, Paisley and even the short success of the understudy of the latter in Fagan.

It's mind boggling why talents like Bowles, Worthington and couple of others still unpicked were overlooked for the national side, despite the success they were enjoying domestically. Probably due to managers and psychology back then trying to restrict the so called "mavericks" at the time and going for team players instead of flair and unpredictability.

Aye. Despite the lack of success on the international stage, English teams were doing pretty good in Europe. There was more quality spread equally between the sides and if you look at purely the titles it might seem that Liverpool were almost everytime walking away with it but they usually won it by point or 2 in the 70's and Derby, Arsenal, Leeds, Man City, United - all were challenging and usually within striking distance to the leaders. Liverpool's success mainly was the sum of parts(as it has been already mentioned in the thread) and the managers that took over - Shankly, Paisley and even the short success of the understudy of the latter in Fagan.

It's mind boggling why talents like Bowles, Worthington and couple of others still unpicked were overlooked for the national side, despite the success they were enjoying domestically. Probably due to managers and psychology back then trying to restrict the so called "mavericks" at the time and going for team players instead of flair and unpredictability.

Apart from the obvious that we all love the period when we were growing up, this is one of the reasons I liked the period - like a lot of sports, football wasn't as predictable and trophies/success were shared around more. Even the less successful teams had some decent cup runs (and players as more stayed with clubs then).

I get why people say football is ruined and only a handful of teams will ever win (unless you get a moneybags), though I may not agree. Winning was never a reason for me to follow United.
