The sending off doesn't excuse that second half performance, we just reverted to playing how Newcastle played on Saturday but with less pace on the counter, we had no tactical pkan that was visible andwe couldn't keep hold of the ball.

I said it was a tougher group than people thought as soon as Atalanta came out of Pot 3. Young Boys out of Pot 4, considering their record last year, was potentially going to offer real problems too, especially when you play them with 10 men.

You have to run harder when you are a man down. And they are playing at home with the crowd behind him. It's an unnecessary tactic when you are comfortably a goal up and they are taking pot shots outside the box.

But we weren't comfortable. They were all over us. We were booting the ball away in desperation, early. Time wasting at every opportunity.

We lost and deserved to lose. His tactics did not work. His subs were atrocious.

If we had to run harder, why didn't he take Ronaldo off straight away? Bottled that.

Don't look at the name, look at the team. Man for man they were stronger, faster, and more energetic. And they had an extra man for almost an hour, of course, along with one of the loudest home supports I've ever seen, felt like Turkey all over again. They were used to the astroturf, we weren't. Constantly slipping and misplacing passed both to man and into space - there's a reason why artificial pitches are looked down upon. It was a team possessed, they played like Leeds on drugs, like I said in another thread. Their celebrations should tell you everything - they were delirious about winning their cup final - a win they wouldn't have had if not for a Lingard brainfart with the last touch of the game.

Contrary to the EL final, I felt Ole was better with his subs today as well. Each of his subs, bar Martial in the end, got us more control in the game. A point away in the CL was a good return even with better teams under SAF with 11 men on the pitch. And I feel we were robbed of a penalty and that the home team got away with fouls in the name of passion as well. It's all well and nice when you want us to keep attacking, but given how YB were playing , we'd have conceded 3 or 4 more on the counter and then these knee-jerkers would be complaining about how Ole got hammered by nobodies. Like it or not, our already weak midfield was horribly exposed till Ole took Bruno and Ronaldo off and Pogba shifted back into the middle. It was one man heroics by Fred for over half an hour.

Ole has had terrible games before, but I don't think this is one of them. Not even close.

Fair enough, also difficult to argue with any of that. Conflicting passions after the match are understandable, it was a tough watch.

Think Ole was very disappointing substitution wise though.

I watched the entire match, I remember 2 chances they created, the shot from the edge of the box immediately after the red, and the cross that deflected off Shaw for their first goal.

And here we are… Ole blamed for Lingard’s poor back pass. The tactics were to hit the ball over the top for Martial to either get loose or kill the game with a point. Lingard was playing deeper, in Fred’s spot because Fred was absolutely knackered and not closing quick enough.

Stop. If you need someone to blame because that’s how you vent, fine, but it doesn’t make it right or valid. I know that intellectually, it’s hard to imagine that one can make the right choice, but have the wrong outcome (or vice versa), but sometimes this happens in life.

He brings Verane on and takes VDB off so we basically allow YB to get to our area with nothing to stop them in midfield. He then takes off our goal threat by bringing off Bruno and Ronaldo, then flip flops on 89 mins and brings on Martial for a quick goal, who has shown nothing of note and leaves Greenwood on the bench. Best sub he did was taking the ineffectual Sancho off.

Actually, going to a back 3 was smart. Young Boys generated most of their chances from the wings in the early going. After AWB went off, we played a 4-4-1 and They were deployed in a 4-3-3, with a natural advantage in midfield of 3v2. Going to a back 3 allows that third CB to step between the lines to defend that 3rd midfielder. Pressing further up the pitch in a 4-4-1 is madness because at that point the midfield advantage in space is very dangerous with 4 defenders.

The 5-3-1 actually worked pretty well. Shaw was in position to block the cross on the first goal but couldn’t close fast enough. He got a foot on it, but the bounce didn’t go our way. Before that, it was a lot of shots from distance… And by the way, VDB has terrible instincts in defending, you can see this around the 15min or so when he doesn’t step to take ball and forces Maguire to come out, which allowed a nice run into the box for YB.

I made this point in another post — sometimes we make the right decisions but a poor outcome. Criticize Ole for team preparedness, for footballing philosophy, fine. But to criticize him for his decisions in a very difficult situation where there may not be an easy answer is myopic.

Two terrible individual mistakes but also a poor managerial and team performance to completely hand the initiative to YB in the second half.

Tactics and changes in the 2nd half just didn’t make any sense. Switched to a 5-3-1 with only Ronaldo up top and got pinned back as a result. We then put in Lingard for Ronaldo instead of Martial, when the latter is better at holding the ball and being an outlet. Took too long to sacrifice one of Bruno and Pogba that were very poor in possession and leaving Fred to do all the donkey work. The Dalot change was necessary and the Matic sub was the right one, but that was about it.

Even with the squad starting the second half we should at least be able to progress the ball much better and have some control of the game or create real chances via counterattack. By the look of it they were not instructed how to move the ball forward at all! We can actually do that pretty well if it was planned (our record against city). That’s concerning. Some people may take issues with the subs but the players are good enough one way or another and should have been better instructed how to play on BOTH ends even with one man down. Knowing our coaches all this time, at this point I can only hope that they really step up and minimize occasions like this.

Looking at the group we've got. If there was any game this season that we could get away with losing, it was probably this one. I still think that we will qualify, but it is concerning how easily we folded after going down to 10 men.

There does seem to be a lack of respect or knowledge about some of the opposition in Europe. Baring in mind that we haven't lost away from home in the PL for 28 games, we still seem to fall apart in Europe.

Being a goal up, we had the advantage. We had enough talent on the pitch after the red card to sit back and hit them on the counter. Taking off a midfielder, for a defender was complete capitulation.

In the grand scheme of things, it's a good game to have had it happen in. We're in a relatively easy group and both our other opponents took points off each other.

What killed us last season was having 3 teams with a high point tally, hopefully that won't happen again.

I'd argue a De Jong type, too. A Rice so we actually have someone capable of shielding and contributing to the defence (our incredible 06-11 defence had Carrick despite all the praise the back 5 gets) and a De Jong so we actually have someone who can control a game, keep the ball under pressure and help the team settle when things are getting tough.

Every other top 4 side controls that game with 10 men. Or at least has a fecking shot
