There are no easy games in the champions league. But with 10 men on a plastic pitch, you are in trouble.

A few things that surprised and annoyed me.

First of all, AWB was getting forward much more in this game than he has done so far in any games this season. He even got a cross in. Unfortunately, his touch let him down and he lunged in to win it back. It was completely unnecessary. We were a goal up and the ball was deep into their half. Pretty much destroyed the match as a contest, but it didn't need to.

To compensate for losing AWB, we overly adapted the team and lost any sort of discernable formation. Instead of subbing Sancho for Dalot, it should have been Varane to center back and Lindelof to right back. Donny should have stayed on to fight it out in midfield where we were completely overrun. Because we took off so many offensive players, when we won the ball back, there was no outlet, apart from Ronaldo on his own. Then we brought him off.

We flooded the pitch with defenders, but it was in midfield where we needed to win the ball back, because by the time the back 5 have to intervene, it is usually a last ditch tackle or a defensive header. If you can control the ball in midfield, you can control the game.

The defensive side of our midfield is very weak. Pogba and Fred are easily dispossessed. We need a midfield destroyer. Someone who can go toe to toe with the opposition, to win the ball back, to control the game. If we had someone like that, I don't think we would have ditched the game plan so easily. Even if we were going to sit back, we could have countered with our world class forwards, but we just couldn't get hold of the ball. Fred is more of a blocker, than a ball winner. When he does win it back, he often loses it straight away. Pogba was completely crowded out, Bruno was a bystander due to the supply issue.

The only positive was Bruno's filthy pass and Ronaldo popping up to slot the ball through the keepers legs.

We will still probably top this group, but my God do we make life hard for ourselves!

The last two lines. So easy to abuse the manager. I agree he's not of the same calibre as the top guns in business, but that was just plain nonsense.

Don't look at the name, look at the team. Man for man they were stronger, faster, and more energetic. And they had an extra man for almost an hour, of course, along with one of the loudest home supports I've ever seen, felt like Turkey all over again. They were used to the astroturf, we weren't. Constantly slipping and misplacing passed both to man and into space - there's a reason why artificial pitches are looked down upon. It was a team possessed, they played like Leeds on drugs, like I said in another thread. Their celebrations should tell you everything - they were delirious about winning their cup final - a win they wouldn't have had if not for a Lingard brainfart with the last touch of the game.

Contrary to the EL final, I felt Ole was better with his subs today as well. Each of his subs, bar Martial in the end, got us more control in the game. A point away in the CL was a good return even with better teams under SAF with 11 men on the pitch. And I feel we were robbed of a penalty and that the home team got away with fouls in the name of passion as well. It's all well and nice when you want us to keep attacking, but given how YB were playing , we'd have conceded 3 or 4 more on the counter and then these knee-jerkers would be complaining about how Ole got hammered by nobodies. Like it or not, our already weak midfield was horribly exposed till Ole took Bruno and Ronaldo off and Pogba shifted back into the middle. It was one man heroics by Fred for over half an hour.

Ole has had terrible games before, but I don't think this is one of them. Not even close.

Clearly we have different definitions of wiping the floor. Wolves were way better against us with 11 than Young Boys with 10, who created only a couple of chances.

I can't help but think that removing Ronaldo (who's likely to score) and Bruno (who can control the ball and score) is only a good idea if you have replacements who would do something better. Did they?
We can see what happens when everyone becomes a defender, btw. So maybe it wasn't important that Ronaldo wasn't closing anyone down and Bruno hadn't touched the ball. Maybe the players who weren't getting the ball to them should have been replaced.

I thought the performance was poor before we took the the lead and that Young Boys where unlucky to be behind. They where creating chances 11 v 11, so as soon as Wan Bissaka was sent off it was always going to be tricky.

I wasn't surprised to see Sancho hooked for Dalot, he seemed to be trying too hard to impress and was making silly mistakes. So the easy choice.

The shift to 5 at the back wasn't surprising, although I half expected Ole to sacrifice one of Bruno or Pogba as he did when we had 10 men against Spurs to get Varane on and allow him to keep Donny in the middle alongside Fred, although neither of them have the ability to keep the ball and relieve the pressure. We really need a central midfielder who can bring us better control in the game.

The red card and Lingard's assist are both avoidable, but the individual mistakes shouldn't distract from how poor we looked overall.

Absolutely fine. I've got no issue with blaming Ole for things like the team (though everyone pre game said fine... some even said too many first teamers), the tactics or the subs.

Even if we got a draw though, I would still be pointing the finger at Ole for allowing us to play like that. It was a shambolic performance even for 10 men.
