PL L FA Premier League

West Ham United 1:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 07 May 2023

That was Man United's first away defeat against the 10th to 20th placed teams in the league this season.

It was P9 W7 D2 and could and should have been drawn 3 and a 6th clean sheet in those 10 games but for that howler from DeGea.

Not strictly true, we are yet to play Bournemouth and you have already assumed we have beaten them. We are very likely to lose there.

Arguably we have had two convincing wins away from home all season, at Everton and Nottingham.

We look absolutely shattered. Created 4 or 5 good chances, can’t finish a ham sandwich. When we are losing it seems counterintuitive to wait until after the 70th minute to bring on subs. Legs were gone, needed Sabitzer a lot earlier.

Should have been a penalty called on Lindelof: moved his hand to the ball and knocked the ball away. Would have been enraged if west ham had done same thing.

If Garnacho was fit enough for the bench, why didn’t he come in when we only needed the one goal? Sabitzer, Sancho, Garnacho is like we’re trying to score. Fred, Dalot, Sancho is like we’re protecting a lead.

And break young players’ careers before they’ve even started? What happens to Mainoo for example if we put him in CM for the last games and we miss out?

What would the starting line-up be?

These are all hypotheticals that no one has the answer to. You can’t assume their careers would be “broken” or anything of that nature, no one knows what would happen since that is all a hypothetical line of questioning.

As for the starting line up, any changes that make a statement.

We have a limited squad. It's a reality. That means the lack of rotation is killing us.

Tonight we did look like last season's shambles, absolutely. But as you say progress has been made and I think we're at a sliding doors moment, in that top four could rally help us kick on, but falling short might be too much for a lot of this squad to absorb.

Entirely agree with the overall post.

The bolded bit really frightens me. I’m not sure how they would react for next if they did bottle it, especially if many of them stick around and play an important part next year.

It was like last season, players doesn't care anymore. It was frustrating to see the start of the 2nd half, De Gea almost gifted Antonio the ball. I cannot believe that we have such a keeper who can mental lapse. Why does ETH insists of passing out from the back? Didn't he learn his lesson at the start of the season. If you have Weghost, Why are you not kicking it long? Again I don't see any cross into the box. Why? Why? Martinelli put in a cross that cause panic into the 6 yard box where Newcastld score an own goal and United take no brsiner 40 yards strike from Bruno and Rashford. ETH seriously that he can guide this team with 3 wins. Sorry, nobody trust this team. Glazers needs to get out of United so we can get a owner who is willing to put up 500 million to get us 5-8 new players. That's the only way that I see moving forward.

Can’t believe we loss again. We are throwing our top 4 advantage away.

Benrahma was surrounded by MUFC players and they simply could not stop him.
I've never heard of him - is he supposed to be any good or did we just make him look good?

Did we even make him look good? He was contained and took a pot shot which had no right going in. I can’t believe he even had the audacity to celebrate like that.

This is truly a bizarre capitulation for a side that should by all accounts be finishing the season on a high note.

There is good news to all this. It will be an exciting finish to the season with top 4 on the line.

I think the week rest will do a lot of good. I think we will win the next two and I think Liverpool will give up points vs Leicester.

Disjointed and lethagic performance. Not sure where the teamwork has gone. As I said in the Brighton thread. Bench is really subpar. You bring on the same group of people hoping for a miracle to happen. Not surprised with the same result.

Individual FC strikes again only it's in reverse.

A bizarre handball from Shaw on Thursday and a not so bizarre De Gea fumble, I just don't understand this squad.

I'm sorry, we are just not a champions league team at the moment. Astonishing how we splunk 250m in the summer yet the squad is mid table at best. We made West Ham look good today ffs. As comfortable a victory you can get.

Why don't these boys want to work for the badge? Seeing them stroll around in the first half when we were 1-0 down is infuriating! Does it not annoy Ten Hag? It just seems a case of upping the tempo, showing a bit of desire and why are we so soft!?

The difference for me is desperation. Our players don't have that, title winners do! Desperate to win the ball, desperate to not lose the ball, desperate to make a challenge, desperate to put the ball in the back of the net, desperate to clear the ball, desperate to not get beat by your man, desperate to not lose!

Today, our boys looked like they couldn't care less..

I've admired ETH for his calm demeanour on the sideline, especially compared to that f**king baboon on the sideline in Anfield, but sometimes I wish he'd just fire a rocket up the players' arses from time to time. Maybe he does it in the dressing room or on the training ground, but it's sometimes needed on the sideline too!

I see a team lacking in confidence.

I see a team of poor finishers.

I see a team waiting for the next mistake.

This is a run of several games where we have looked really poor. No ideas in attack. Inaccurate pot shots at goal. No patterns of play in the final 3rd.

This is stuff Ten Hag needs to fix. We were 3rd in the table not too long ago. If he can’t fix it and we slide to 5th, he’ll have a very short leash next season at the very least.

An awful performance. Soul destroying!
Its not all on DDG - the rest of the team (it still is a team game I think!) fumbled too. In his defence I think if you look at the clip you will see that he loses his footing as he dives to save which probably takes at least a foot off his dive and allows the poor handling of the ball. He only let in one - the attack only had to score one or two to make it all right. They didn't!

In the first 20 minutes Rashford x2 (1x clipping outside of post), Bruno x2, Antony (good chance) and Eriksen all shoot and put the ball wide. 6 attempts and not a single 1 within the width of the posts and making the goalkeeper make a save. That was awful and theres no reason for it. At least half of these should have been attempts on target with a player following up in case the keeper spills it for an easy goal. These should be the basics we have covered.

True but at the same time, this shows we were creating the better chances before you know who dropped his usual clanger. After that, the entire team just lost all momentum and that was it.

Yes we were. But it also reinforces the importance of getting our efforts on target and making the goalkeeper do his job. If Benrahma doesnt get his shot on target, like those 6 previous efforts we had in the first 20 mins then De Gea doesnt mess up and put it in.

Absolutely fecking fuming. The goal, Benrama being a total cnut and trolling Rashford by doing his celebration (shows the heart of a absolute bottom feeder and a bottom trash club). Bissaka being smashed in the head and no penalty, what the feck?
You know, I was thinking the same thing but I'm my broadcast they never showed a replay of the clash even once.

They are tired. Too many games this season with a limited squad.

We should have flunked the Europa League.

AWB, Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, Antony, Weghorst, Martial, Fred, Casemiro, Dalot, Sancho, Elanga.

All of them have played a pretty average number of games. Some only half a season.

We've got an entire XI that should be pretty fresh if fatigue is the problem.

Sould have scored before their goal. Never came back. DDG had saved us many times, but at the moment he becomes a big liability. He can not pass the ball, jumps like a legless frog, errors...

Some of the guys who played looked a bit knackered but I take your point. If not fatigue, what is the problem underlying our disappointing run of form, do you think?

It's just about quality. Especially in the front three. If they create more or finish the chances we're getting all of a sudden everybody would look more energised. It's a mental thing.

Right now its a slog but that's because of a lack of goals rather than actual fatigue.

It is yet another example of these players being mentally poor.

We were dominating and then DDG does his all too familiar novice error and we just cannot mentally deal with it during a game.

Its been said many times by the manager, bouncing back after a defeat is something this team can do but they are useless at doing it during a game.

This group of players have to be one of the worst at dealing with adversity during a game, they literally fold every time.

I am not even sure how you address that as a manager, some players are just not good at dealing with it and we seem to have a whole bunch of them.

That is about it really.
Lethargic, static, heads down, lacking in leadership, players hiding, far too many square or backward passes. And failure to take ownership of the situation.
And as we know, far too many bang average players within the squad.

Complete dogshit fragile small time mentality.

One bad thing happens, everyone shits the bed. If we score first we are an alright team. Concede at any point in a game and we are pathetic.

Absolute piss take of a mob on disgusting contracts with all the fecking bollocks of a convent.

feck off.

Quite so.
It is far too easy to put all the blame on DDG, bad as it was.
There were chances that were yet again squandered.
Yes we did have enough possession. But most of that was square or backward passing.
The experiment with Weghorst seems to have unbalanced the side.

No chance of Liverpool dropping points at Leicester - have you seen how poor they are? they aren't suddenly going to start playing like they did in their title-winning season. I'd be surprised if they dropped any point at all in their remaining games: we may need Villa to do us a favour but I can't see it coming

they haven't learnt the basics of when to pass and when to shoot - get it wrong about 99% of the time

What I’m getting at is: Why is the quality so much lower now than it has been earlier in the season?

What also pissed me off yesterday was how much the players looked like strangers playing for themselves, totally disconnected from each other. No one on the same wave length. Not exactly what you’d want to see this deep in the season.

Still pissed off about the total lack of urgency, intensity and concentration yesterday. Actually looked like they were not interested.
