EL W Europa League Match Day 6

Viktoria Plzen 1:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 12 December 2024

The last 30 mins was actually quite good, there was a good tempo to our play and we were running and fighting.

Decision-making in the final third let us down could perhaps should of scored 3 or 4 in the second half.

The first 55-60 mins was slow and ponderous. But we did keep plzen at an arms length for most of the game.

Bruno dead ball lead to second goal. Malacia is improving every match.

Fair point. I guess just the sheer quantity of deliveries that don’t clear the first man cloud the judgement.

Malacia has improved but if you have historically watched United left backs (Evra, Irwin, Shaw etc.) you can see blind as day he will never be of the requisite quality.

Bring on Rangers. Cautiously confident of an easy win against them. Third in a two team league and never great away from home in Europe...
And yet outplaying Spurs tonight. I wouldn't be surprised to see them beat us.

Shaw played LWB for England
One or two games? Honestly, I don’t think he has the engine for that role anymore, especially given the number of injuries he’s had. If I were Amorim, I’d rotate him with Martínez in the left-sided centre-back position.

If Amorim is intent on sticking with his usual full-back and winger setup out wide, then it’s absolutely crucial we bring in a left-sided player this summer to strengthen that area.

I just read on Reddit someone describing Zirkzee and Rashford as ‘two cheeks of the same ass’

I couldn’t agree more.

Difference after we hooked Rashford and Zirkzee was massive.

Rashford has held this club back for a long, long time and in a sense, is symbolic of a decade of decay. Lazy, arrogant, over-hyped, weak, fragile, more concerned about his image than his actual performances. Its time for him to be sidelined once and for all.

Zirkzee...trying not to jump on the bandwagon because I am all for giving players time...but he's not a #9. I understand the idea...go into his feet and let others play off him, but he's not actually that good up against a centre half facing his own goal. He's not strong enough or dynamics enough, and he doesn't look after the ball anywhere near well enough. Clearly has technical ability, some nice moments and lovely pulldown of high spinning ball, but looks way off the pace.

When Mount and Hojlund came on, they changed the game by stretching the game. Mount is one of the few players we have who constantly wants to run behind, rather than receive it to feet. This is a massively underrated trait, when a player is intelligent enough to use it well.

I liked Amad in the #10 also, that so creates a conundrum, in the shape of Bruno. I really hate him in a deeper role, he's weak, he's wasteful, his pass selection is poor, he's easily bypassed by opponents and he can't effect the game in a positive way when so deep. For me, he has to be a #10 or he has to be left out in this system.

Also a comment on Dalot...I think he's another who's really bad and basically has made a United career out of having an average season the season literally every single other player fell off a cliff. He's brainless, he's no threat at all going forward, he's lazy and he's just persistently sluggish in and out of possession. He's the type of full back that should be at Newcastle or Villa, languishing in mid-table.

First game I’ve missed in years, how did we do? Just seen their first goal. Terrible.
Absolutely shockingly bad for an hour, as bad as bad can be...on par with some of the all-time lows. No energy, couldn't string a pass together, no threat, relentless poor touches, no runners, poor weight of pass etc...

Once we hooked Zirkzee and Rashford, we looked like scoring every time we went forward, or at least getting a shot away, and could have scored three or four

Last half hour was decent. First hour was gross. Rahford and Zirkzee need selling asap.
Keep Hojlund playing upfront. Feed him and he will score.

United as it stands 7th in the table and remaining games against FCSB and Rangers who are currently 8th and 10th in the table.

Any reason why Dalot, who's right footed, played LWB and Antony, who's primarily left footed, played RWB? It doesn't make sense to me.

First goal took a rather lucky deflection into Hojlunds path, freekick was 50/50 for me he only handles it because Mazraoui pulls his hand down and knocked him off balance, it hit his shoulder then his hand, so it could have been given either way.

It's easy to just look at the stats and say Utd totally dominated, they were wasteful, gave away a shit goal and scored 2 goals that had elements of luck to them. Maybe on another night Rashford might have saw red for his tackle before he was subbed.

In the end when you add it all up, they were shite in the first half, dominated the second without really being too threatening. Deserved to win, but in the end I think were quite lucky to come out with a 2-1 win.
If thats a red then we should all find something else to do with our time.

I'm amazed how some of these players are professional footballers
Missing sitters left and right, like it their daily routine. This isn't just luck anymore, this is their level.
Only Hollund seems to know you are supposed to put the ball in oppo team's net.

If thats a red then we should all find something else to do with our time.

Well it would have been a second yellow. I'd agree it would have been harsh. But in the context of the game, he was kind of getting niggly the couple of minutes before that, and was already on a yellow. So, when he dived in like he did, it was stupid because he's giving the referee a decision to make. Another ref on another night might have given him a card for it.

I think we need a defensively sound CM who can control and build from deep next to Ugarte and that's our spine pretty sorted.

Not too worried about back three and the two AM roles to be honest.

We do badly need proper top quality wingbacks for this to get rolling though.

There's the three signings we need to actively work on. CF would be a bonus, but nobody will do much better than Hojlund without fixing that first.

Interesting that Mount took the last corner. Even Amad in the first half for our only corner failed to clear the first man. I'm amazed at how shit we are in taking corners.

Thought it was a great result against a physically superior team, on an horrendous pitch with very poor refereeing (affecting both sides) and frosty conditions.

We saw that Zirkzee has some great skills and some poor execution, Rashford was woeful, Dalot is not the answer for right wing-back as he doesn't have the technical level or speed going forward, Casemiro was decent, Bruno had a pretty good game I thought, and we didn't concede a single corner which was a huge relief given the opposition and how fragile we are at dealing with them.

It’s clear to see which players need to be moved on, more importantly with big upgrades in their place.
LWB, Left number 10.
We were much better after the subs.
Delighted for Hojlund. Really hope he can keep the goals coming, that second was a proper number 9 goal.
Obviously not convincing but a wins a win.

Too early in the morning to watch in Singapore but managed to catch the highlight from YouTube. Just purely based on the highlight. Onana is not our XI goalkeeper, how can you be so stupid to gift wrap a goal for the opponent? If I have an offer, I would sell him and find someone younger, cheaper and more consistent. Dalot is just an average player and should be replaced whenever possible, he is consistently giving balls aways due to his carelessness and giving opponents opportunity to attack. Bruno is another that I only want far away from our goal, he is a liability whenever he tries to influence the game picking up the ball in our half where he would lose the ball under pressure. Have not seen Rashford in the highlight except being sub. Looks Antony and Amad could play well together on the right. Hoijund seems to found his confidence. Overall, United is an average team because we sign so many average players. In all seriousness, was there competition when we sign the likes of Bruno, Dalot, Mount, Antony, Malacia, Martinez, De Ligt and others? For those players where there is a host of clubs trying to sign, almost all signed for other teams.

So will there now be 7 pages on why we should sell Amad for his poor decision making in the final third like with Garnacho?

Good result but we were entirely missing in central midfield for a lot of the game.
So many times defenders had the ball and had to go back to onana because there were no passing options. Drove me insane.
Mainoo can be that guy but Casemiro and Bruno today offered very little in ball progression.

Horrendously dull first half, thankfully a much improved second half in terms or tempo and urgency. I wish we could just play like that instead of needing the wakeup call to click into gear.

In the end a deserved win and we should have had more considering the counters we had at the end.

Very happy to see Hojlund wracking up a few goals now even if most of them are in the EL. He impressed when he came on as did Mount. Amad had some nice moments but not as impressive as some recent games I thought. Quiet game from most of the others. Zirkzee was very poor in terms of his passing and hold up play. I expect those things to be on point for him as we already know he's not a big goalscorer so that was a let down. Obviously horrendous moment from Onana, who look a bit shook all game to be honest. De Ligt had a part to play in that too probably.

When was the last time this team took the ball to the opponent's corner in the dying minutes of a game and kept it there and saw out a win? We were masters at this under SAF and we don't even try to do it anymore. Right now, it is always a heart-in-the-mouth affair for United if we are a goal up.

I know Amorim has bigger problems to solve before this, but the players really need to be more professional when it comes to game management. It does not help that Bruno is captain and his own game is a bit chaotic. We need someone who is vocal on the pitch about this.

The last 5 minutes was an absolute disgrace. ETH wide open ball. Couldn't hold the ball and some players just hoofing it straight back to the opponents.

Mount and Anthony should start the next game. They aren't the favourites of many but they technically able and can link up with the likes of Amad and Hojlund.
Definitely Mount and Amad as the two 10s. I like the idea of Antony as the RWB, but vs City maybe best Mazraoui.

Hope Bruno gets dropped. Really as CM he’s to light. We need Ugarte & Mainoo

Can Jimmy be ruthless to the players next window? Ashworth isnt the only person he need to get angry at

First goal took a rather lucky deflection into Hojlunds path, freekick was 50/50 for me he only handles it because Mazraoui pulls his hand down and knocked him off balance, it hit his shoulder then his hand, so it could have been given either way.

If after watching that game you 'add it all up' and decide we were lucky then I suspect maths isn't your strong point.

Weren't Pilzen incredibly lucky to be gifted a goal completely out of the blue from an Onana brainfart? Clearly not given you say we both 'deserved to win' and yet were 'quite lucky to come out with a 2-1 win'.

No we didn't play well for the entire first half. Too slow and lethargic but we were more than good value for the win.

Playing out from the back should be done mainly from GK to the side. Onana’s mistake is pretty much the repeat of DDG against Brentford. Onana should be better than having to play the easy forward pass to his direct facing teammate. Unexplainable for a GK of his quality on the ball other than a confidence issue.
