Did Mourinho really say that we don't want to play league matches anymore

Still believe we'll win the Europa league and our season would be a successful one.

Jose is putting more unnecessary pressure on us to win the europa league with these sort of comments.

This.

I understand the need to rest players, but you also want momentum.

I can't be bothered looking up Ajax's results, but I bet there's a chance they're winning games regularly. It does make a difference in the mentality of players.

But how many of those players who started today will be in contention for a starting spot come the final? Very few I'd say.

This game is/was inconsequential in the grand scheme of things and the players were very well aware of that fact. They gave it a go though, particularly when Miki and Herrera were introduced.

Their season has finished!

We have another 2 league games to play.

It was a make shift team that didn't finish with an embarrassing scoreline, poor performance but not the end of the world.

However some players clearly aren't good enough. Rooney is completely finished. I say this after every match he plays, it's like playing a man down from the start.
Carrick's performances over the past few weeks have declined enormously. He is very close to the end of his career now and wouldn't be surprised if he retires.
Lingard is a completely average player barring a few spectacular moments. I think he's good to have in the squad but shouldn't be playing as much as he does.
One of Jones or Smalling need to be replaced asap.

The team for the final should play against Southampton then be rested against Crystal Palace.

I just don't get it. If we don't care about the league anymore why did we put out such a negative line up, we had 5 centre backs playing ffs. Surprise, Surprise, as soon as we had more than three forward-thinking players on the pitch we actually looked half decent.

Another point, I can't tell if we have a severe amount of average players, or if the manager just isn't setting up the team to get the best out of the squad. I'm willing to give Jose another summer as he's usually good in the transfer market, but if he continues with this boring, negative football next season we'll have to find someone else.

Oh no the team have attackers quick put on 11 defenders. Sick of managers not just going out and saying this is my team, try and stop me
I feel your pain mate. It's depressing as feck.

Cheer up man. Almost all your posts are pessimistic. All clubs go through lean periods. Us oldies know this very well.

I think these players need that kick up the arse. If that's too much for them they aren't really cut out for it.

I don't think our players are completely oblivious - there was already a shit tonne of pressure on us to win it. Jose's comments change nothing.

Too many immobile and slow players.

Darmian, Blind, Rooney, Zlatan, Jones, Carrick, - none could keep up with these Spurs team.
Imagine if Carrick, Zlatan Jones and Darmian were part of the team that played Spurs earlier in the season where we schooled them and denied them a single shot on target.... Oh wait...

Pace is awesome though, right?

I thought it was going to get embarrassing when the second went in. Both their goals were sloppy for me, not well marked at all. We look a different team without Pogba and Ander in midfield. Our centre back pairing concerns me for Ajax.

Agreed with what you've both said but I still think with almost throwing the league away and now having to win this game or it goes down as a massive gamble that hasn't worked out.

I'm 25, I love the club. I just can't stand to see such a clear lack of a plan. We aren't going to improve my constantly being scared of the other team. We need teams to worry about us, and that won't happen with players like Lingard getting massive contracts being paid more the Ali and Kane etc.

What was once the norm no longer is , certainly if your the worlds biggest and richest club .Utd allowed other clubs to overtake them and we cant place all the blame on Moyes and LVG , players brought into and kept at the club like by Sir Alex like Smalling and Jones never were the standard we need .Mourinio will be ruthless this summer , i expect to see at least 6 or 7 players leave

How can you say it hasn't worked out? Surely the EL final needs to actually be played before we can tell whether it was a successful gamble.

Our squad is average at best but I actually thought we played okay in the second half. First half we came out with the same old tactic of sitting back and inviting pressure, which I never understood. But second half, we actually tried to take the game to Spurs, which is what we should be doing against any team in the league.

In the end though, this was a dead rubber game which had no bearing on our final league position, given we had messed up top 4 earlier in the season. On to the Europa League final, which unfortunately will define whether this was a good or bad season.

I said we have to win this game or it'll be a massive gamble which hasn't paid off.

Lingard, Smalling and Jones are utter shiite!

So is Rooney but we all know that anyway.
Pretty much this. Can't wait for the season to be over. We are utter crap, but to potentially win two trophies is quiet an achievement for this group of players. I am concerned with our lack of form heading into a European final. Jose playing it so safe with selection and not focusing on performance might leave us slightly under cooked for a final that Ajax will be pumped up for.

It's for people like this that I'm glad I got off twitter.

How can you possibly disagree with the sentiment here? 13 games is an insane amount of football in such a small period of time, not to mention the pressure the players were under following the launch of a new kit. Come on, mate, show some understanding at least.

A fair point. But a lot of today's side are not, will never be, or are no longer of the standard required at this football club.

This is also true but we have to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water every time we lose.

Other than Rooney and arguably Zlatan because of his current status, I dont think there are any players we could or should just cut without having replacements lined up

It was a better score line than I thought it be even though we still lost. Right or wrong it's clear to see that the players are just going through the motions and now that finishing in the top four is mathematically impossible it leaves us with nothing to play for.

The shape of the team was bizarre in the first half, many players playing out of position, some players I wasn't sure where they were supposed to be. The second half was a little better when we brought on a bit more experience/quality. I can sympathise with Mourinho, he has 15 fit players to work with, there is a quick turnaround with the games and also we've played more games than anyone else (apart from Monaco who have played the same I believe)

Just underpins what I already knew. Jones, Smalling, Lingard need to go. The fact we just handed the latter a 100k a week contract just beggers belief and is the epitome of everything wrong with the club on the pitch at the moment.

Its bang average but postera were blaming the absence of Balon Dor winning Martial, the next Lahm in Luke Shaw and David Silva with pace Mkhi as to why we struggled. Then Ibra was slowing us down and we looked soooo much more dangerous with 19 yo Rashford up top.
One of the reasons people are disillusioned is down to the expectations and first impressions.
It's easy to hide behind youth, we don't have to win now but in a few years well be back to where we were. Its a fantastic squad who needs a manager... Except its not.
We're 7/4/5/6th in the last 4 for a reason. People need to wake up and realise how big of a job Jose has

So much pressure now for that EL final. If we lose it, this season will have been a complete wash.

We shouldn't be scared of a club like Tottenham. But that's the way we play sometimes.

I said we have to win this game or it'll be a massive gamble which hasn't paid off.

Just to be clear, because I'm so confused right now, you're saying that throwing the league to focus solely on the Europa League is a gamble, right?
In which case, today's match has no bearing on whether the gamble has paid off.

Why are some people acting like it was today that we've completely lost chances for top 4 and put everything into one basket? We've done that last week against Arse.

A nothing performance, as in very shit, didn't expect much either so it was a bit of a meh for me. Deserved 3 points for Spurs obviously, at least we can see how many 'squad players' are up to par for next season, watching Jones and Smalling today was fecking hilarious. @kouroux sorry to address your post from the match thread but I forgot about it. Yeah, last season Smalling was very, very good but I think we've been conned by LVG's system which made him and other defenders look far better than they actually are.

I'm saying it's a gamble putting all your eggs in one basket. The way we almost stopped trying in the league will be made to be a mistake IF we don't win the europa league.

he was no worse than jones today

at least jones can play a simple pass to a team mate sometimes where mike is just awful . hopefully we will sign a good player in the summer to compete with baily and rojo if he can recreate this seasons form after his injury.

Not sure what anyone was expecting from this game?! We knew we'd be playing a below strength team, City, Liverpool and Arsenal had already won meaning that there was very little for us to play for, and Spurs were playing their last ever game at WHL. The game panned out exactly as I expected it to.

It's okay, I think I finally realised what you were saying originally. When you said "this game" you meant the upcoming Europa League final, not today's match. That's where my confusion stemmed from.

In that case, yes I completely agree with you.

As you were.
