Post-match discussion

How can you possibly disagree with the sentiment here? 13 games is an insane amount of football in such a small period of time, not to mention the pressure the players were under following the launch of a new kit. Come on, mate, show some understanding at least.
Sorry mate.

I was split in my loyalties today. Although I wanted us to win, Spurs are so like how we used to play under the glory years of Ferguson, with teams full of quality players with attacking intent. Today, was like us in the past playing a minor negative lower league team. Absolutely embarrassing where we are now.

Failure to win the EL this season, will be seen as poor whatever our manager says. If Mourinho doesn't have us challenging for the league & being competitive against the top teams of the premiership next season, I think his cards maybe coming quicker than he thinks. Fans will put up with utter tosh for so long, as long as we are winning the top competitions, but sooner rather than later fans will turn if we don't.

Going through the motions in the league.

Rooney looks like he's already moved on to me.

He could of given the other 2 kids a run out say the last 15 mins instead of Herrera and Miki, who did feck all by the way. Mourinho wasnt bothered winning the game from the off. Rooney and Carrick 2 of the slowest players we have. Smalling and Jones in Centre Defence. He surely isnt going to play those 2 together in the final!

Encouraging performance I thought.

Gave a good game against a rampant Tottenham side that were fresh, obviously highly motivated and quite simply better than us at this moment. Could have easily been embarrassing given the circumstances but we matched up well and could easily have nicked a draw. Smalling and Jones grew into the game, Jones doing some trademark excellent last ditch defending and Martial looking more like his old self towards the end.

Looks like Bailly can cover the right back position if we need him to keep Valencia fresh for these last 2 games, and ultimately looks like we can face up well to a side very similar in style but far superior in quality to Ajax.

I knew today's match meant feck all but is it my fault if I expected the players and the play to be much more positive with a hint of folie and as a result be disappointed :( ?
This team is joyless and this in matches where nothing is expected from them in terms of result

If we play reactive ,this is what you will get all times, This team can only play well in a.posession based philosophy in a proactive way. Our defense and midfeild is not good enough to not conceed goals if we play reactive football.

A repeat of everything that's happened previously.

Defensively set up. Nothing going forward. Rooney and Lingard horrendous as per. Smalling a calamity. No drive through the middle without Pogba. You know, standard United game. Although today we didn't even really create chances which we have done when we have been poor other times.

Didn't watch this game as I was certain we'll replicate the Arsenal horror show. How did we play? How was the performance?

Tired of smallings lethargicity in defense. :wenger:

It was a typical machine-like performance from a Jose Mourinho football team. He's not the sort to throw caution to the wind and allow the players yo go out and express themselves just because the game is insignificant.

Jose will never change in that regard.

Just felt like a nothing game, couldn't get remotely invested in it.

At least we gave it a go, I suppose, and it wasn't a thrashing although DDG can take credit for that, as they could've had 3-4 easily. There are too many players at this club that I just have no time or feelings for, really. Obviously we can't, and won't sell all of them but we just lack so much when you drill down into it.

Anyway, we knew it was a dead rubber. I just wish the next two games would disappear really, our league season has been an immense washout. Again. Onto the EL final!

Jose is not Sir Alex, no body is.

Smalling and Jones are the reason of why we struggle every year in Premier League

Jones and Smalling are shocking. Our squad is bang average. Jose needs to play to our strengths, rather then worry about others.
I'm not the biggest critic of Jones and Smalling, but they are just not of the required standard (Smalling in particular; I used to think he was, but he has really regressed.)

Part of me wonders if it wouldn't be a bad idea to throw 50 million at Juventus for either Bonucci or Chielini (or whatever the required amount is.) Granted, neither is exactly young, but we really could use some proven quality back there.

Smalling and Jones can only do well when they are protected better by the midfeild and the team is proactive in winning the ball back.

Split in loyalties!! Thats a lot to say. All I could muster was -. I don't care if we lose today.

Utter tosh? He has played some good stuff this season. Our profilgacy in front of goal was our downfall. I'm very hopeful for next season - especially when it is clear that there is a big summer coming.

This won't be 1 or 2 changes. Jose will take the weak links of the squad and solidify them. I expect at least 4-5 signings. My only worry is that we don't overdo it and make Martial or Rashford surplus to requirements.

The base for a great team is there. (GK, Bailly, Ander, Pogba, Martial, Rashford, Mhiki, Valencia). Add a few top players to that and we are sorted for a while.

Surely we can't fire another manager and start from scratch again! As you will have seen over the last 3 years. Each manager has his own ideas and a lot of players do not fit into such ideas.

100% right
Rooney was a very, very good player, and sometimes brilliant, though he was never a favourite of mine. He'll be on his way in the summer and as much as we may thank him for his achievements at United, I don't think he would have been half the player he became if he hadn't joined us when he did.

Can I just make the point that finishing fourth would mean that we would have to face a team of Ajax's standard? If we can't beat Ajax in the final then we might not have been able to beat a team in August next year to get to the group stages. Finishing fourth does not guarantee Champions League group stage football.

Not a notion I agree with. Completely different scenarios and not as simple as saying it'd be a similar quality team therefore the same.

1) In a final anything can happen. A stroke of bad luck. An off day.
2) Qualifier is two legs. The odds of the better team coming through are much higher than in a one off game.
3) Pressure. The pressure of a final is significantly more even though there'd be a lot of pressure in the qualifier.

Not saying I disagree with the plan to give up on the league, I understand it. But this argument isn't a good one in my honest opinion.

Jose is putting more unnecessary pressure on us to win the europa league with these sort of comments.

Yes, the pressure is needed and it's nothing compared tot he pressure of trying to win the premier league with Top teams chasing your tail. If this team wants to win the premier league, they should be able to handle pressure like this.

Jose is managing them well.

You guys calling the players shit, do you know their minds and focus is no longer in the premier league?

What the hell?! How did Rooney get 5% of votes for being our MOTM? Do we have KKK fraction within redcafe? If so why is it so big and what will the mods do about it?

I see where you're coming from but ultimately while the Europa League adds pressure, it also raises determination because a trophy is available. I believe the team will be more motivated in a major cup final over some Champions League preliminaries.

Also, next season we don't want to be stressing about whether or not we will get into the Champions League. We need to be focused on achieving as well in the Premier League as possible. The focus will be shifted from our opening Premier League games to the two qualifiers that are required. This could be detrimental to our season as a good start is essential.
If we get knocked out, our confidence will be destroyed. Again, that would negatively affect our Premier League games. At least if we don't win the Europa League, we have a summer to rebuild our confidence and reassess our priorities.
