Sunderland 0:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 09 April 2017

The problem we seem to have is passing the the ball around to players stood still and not being clinical when we have the chance of a break. We always seem to be on the back foot and frightened of taking a chance, Lingard was making plenty of runs between their defenders and no one spotted an opportunity to play it to him we really have to learn how to stretch defenses. Sunderland were very poor and we did not create a lot, inspirational moment from Zlatman amd Mikhi T Ryan had so much space and a little luck it going through the defenders legs. Overall an adequate performance but must learn from this against better teams.

Not much to write home about today, decent enough performance against a really crap side. Still though its good to get three more points on the board, Shaw looked good coming back and hopefully he can finally kick on.
Pogba is very worrying though, he just never really looks any good, or looks like he's going to do anything. Maybe he'll light it up next season, but if not then I think it would be time for us to look elsewhere.

Absolute "Meh" performance if there was one. We won, so that is OK but we could all see that if it had been any team other than Sunderland, who were absolute garbage, we would have struggled.

I just want to make a mention of the number of moves that fell apart because of stilly touches, misplaced pases, lack of understanding. It was becoming a bit unbearable to watch.

The pace of our attack was painfully slow, and our players don't seem to have any understanding with each other at all. It is almost like watching a set of players assembled over a short period of time to represent their NT or something, as opposed to players who train day in day out with each other.

It left a lot be be desired and I for one, am far from convinced with that performance.

I hate to be too critical of our players as we do have a nice bunch of players. They appear down to earth, some with a good sense of humour and all are trying their best. No big egos with the exception of Zlatan and his seems to be part humour and part charm. I still think we can achieve a CL spot with them but lets face facts to be competitive next year in both premiership and hopefully Champion's league, more than half of them have to be replaced as they are just not good enough. We need more game changers/ winners, players that instill fear in opponents and make us expect great things whenever they get the ball. I am not asking for a '98-99 squad but something close to that would be nice.

If we lose out on 4th due to GD, we can look back at this match specifically. They were garbage, a man down, and we still couldn't put away the majority of our chances. Happy for the win but this was not anything to write home to mom about against the bottom dwellers of the league.

Scoring three isn't too bad, but I agree we missed chances (again).

I was pleasantly surprised when I checked the goal difference disparity at the end though: only three behind City and Arsenal and six behind Liverpool with two games in hand to (hopefully) improve it. The way we've pissed around missing chances and drawing games I thought we were much further behind than we are.

You have to be happy with any 3-0 win really, even against a dreadful team like Moyesy's Boyseys.

Three excellent goals, though. Great for Mkhi and Rashford to get a confidence boost by getting on the scoresheet. Onto the next one I suppose.

Biggest banker of the season, and turned out that way.

Not at home, Moyes, dreadful opponent who haven't scored for about 2 months.

Actual goals! That was nice to see. The fact we had 3 different scorers as well was good I thought. Hopefully that builds a bit of confidence in the team. Nice to see Shaw put in a decent effort which he should build on now.

My points following the game:

- Comfortable win at last, always welcome before an EL match away
- 3 different players scored, good for confidence, especially Rashford
- Bailly and Rojo solid again, though they did not have much to do
- Good performance by Shaw - thought he was going to complain at the sub with the way he walked off, but luckily it was fine
- Worried about DDG, I don't believe that he has 'a little problem'

Because we will never find a better chance to take him of early and give him some extra rest than we had at 2-0 against a 10 man Sunderland side

He's had a 3 game ban recently, and we don't play until Thursday. And it wasn't exactly an exhausting or taxing game. He'll be fine, good grief

Is it just me but did Zlatan not seem a little out of breath during his post-match interview?

Chuffed with the win today. We've got some difficult games coming up so to win this one was a must.

Glad we won, but the amount of times easy attacks broke down was extremely frustrating.

We had a chance to pump up our GD even more. I was yelling at them to go for the 3rd. At least we got the 3rd in the end.

If we miss out on GD again, it'll be infuriating.

Happy with the 3 points and Marcus getting a goal. Excellent.

Pogba is such bipolar performer. He can be world class one moment and failing an easy pass the next.

He was strolling around at about 5 miles per hour, I don't think he was exhausting himself.

Easy comfortable win, Zlatan MoM, nobody had a bad game and Romero did well when he had to. Shaw did well and hope he keeps going.

Seemed to play in 3rd gear which was understandable and conserved energy.
Too congested and didn't make enough space. As the game went on after Rashford and then Martial came on and Sunderland tired there was more space and people were making the correct runs, if we had pushed on a bit more could have scored one or two more.

Happy with 3-0 as a rare occasion when I got the correct score.

One day we will have all the players available and all the better players will play at the same time and we will destroy someone

Bailly and Rojo need to stay.

Shaw and Valencia hopefully complete the defence for the run in.

David May's claim to fame is that he got more medals than Shearer, despite averaging only 8 games per season over 10(!) years with us.

Not all chants are about the players themselves, but about taking the piss out of another player/team. In Diego's case, it's us taking the piss out of the dippers. It's not that hard a concept really.

Well, if I were taking the piss out of LFC, I'd focus more on them not winning the league for 20+ years and the saying, "next year will be our year".
Singing about Forlan (or anybody) scoring 2 goals against them, isn't much of a piss take.
So, the concept which you attempted to explain using logic, wasn't very logical. ;)
In any case, I don't want to create an argument/debate over something so trivial...so as you were gents.

Not an argument at all.

The piss take is that during his time here Forlan was seen (correctly) as a complete failure (17goals in 98games) who missed some guilt-edged chances. And the Scousers used to take the piss out of him. However shite he was, he did score two goals in 2 minutes at Anfield tho. And that's the piss take.

And don't you worry, we do sing about them not winning the title for 20+ years too. The imagination was not exhausted with the Forlan chant :D

For a team low on confidence that was a good away win. Especially Rashford breaking his drought. Lingard played very well and everyone was ready to take shots and three actually went in which for us is amazing!

Team performance on the attacking side still feel a bit disjointed at times, and like other poster said, sometimes it feels like "they meet and play with each other the first time". I guess that's what low confidence would do to any player.

Either way, the facts are that United won, scored more than one goal, clean sheet and hopefully gained back some confidence that would see them play like when they were in December. Pogba looks sluggish, but that is expected from someone who have played a lot of football and no pre-season team workouts. Next season should be very interesting for Pogba and his fans. Just hope the team will continue the good work and gain good results until the end of the season.

Zlatan was immense. Shaw looked good. I thought defensively Fellaini was head and shoulder above Pogba but a liability in attack. Good for Rashford scoring but he still missed too many opportunities for my liking.

60 minutes on we are basically playing counter attack against a very poor Moyes side with 10 men and should have scored more. Pogba played a role in those counters despite not doing anything whole game, but poor decisions at the end and that tell just how poor our counter attack was.

Defense also below average, good clubs would have scored 2-3 from the chances Sunderland got.

Herrera shooting has been consistently bad. That's where he is lacking compared to Kante

Confidence booster and Finishing trial match. :annoyed:We're so bad at killing games.

Sergio Romero is class.

Luke Shaw is our best LB by far, nice to see he's not hiding, attacking relentlessly and more committed in tackles. Imagine once Valencia is back, total attacks in both sides .

Darmian. Wow, he's that good at RB defensively. Good battle against Anichebe. No more at LB please.

Zlatan. We need him. Pogba, Rashford and Martial can't carry us yet.

And yeap Jose, we fans appreciate efforts by players especially against rivals. Diego Forlan~

On the opposing end,

Pickford. Impressive. England's National Team GK future is bright. Right mentality. Larsson's red card. Justified imo. Studs showing during tackles, and he's playing aggressively. Plus, he's very 'critical' towards ref and linesmen so.. not helping. Thanks anw Sunderland and Moyes for 'training' Januzaj.

Straight forward win. Scoring the first goal was important as I could see things dragging on otherwise. Red card was a red card, (arguably if Larsson just bends his leg then its a yellow). The second goal was comical from Sunderlands point of view and good to see Rashford finally score and give him a boost of confidence hopefully. Pogba played some lovely stuff at times.

Shame we didn't score more but obvious we weren't over extending ourselves (yet again).

Pickford looks promising even if he looks about 7 years old.

And cant wait to see Sunderland relegated.

In what sense? He didnt have a very good game and lacked focus, especially the last 15 mins were shocking

Love winning games again, unbeaten run and all.

But feck me, we are tedious to watch.

I don't know if I'm being unfair, but caught myself doing lots of other things during United games. It just doesn't hold the attention anymore.

We are too laid back, side passing or non creative a lot of times, almost like we have little intentions when the ball is at our players' feet.
