CL L Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg

Manchester United 1:2 Sevilla

Post-match discussion

Fair point.

We might be have better individual talent but I'm not sure we are a better team.
Exactly, and that's a scary thing. If we can't win a game at home on a massive night with the notably better set of players, there's still something very wrong. I would agree were a better team now than before Jose walked in, but I don't think it would have taken a masterclass to get this team to perform better than that.

For 4-5 months now, I've felt like I've been watching a Van Gaal era team and I don't bother going to watch games on TV anymore. I have watched at most 1 game watched in the last 10.

I am really done with Mourinho and to an extent the players as a group - and this isn't even a knee jerk reaction. I can accept 2nd if we look like we try. A Manchester United team that plays without intensity is a disgrace to the legacy SAF left us.

The players then showed with the effort that they understood what it meant to be Manchester United players, this group I suspect is a group of whose mindset is that they are lads first and foremost.

There's no sign that we'll play proper football under Mourinho. Those who still want Mourinho to remain are in the majority I am sure however, Chelsea, Real and even Barca have shown that a high turnover of coaches is not a problem if you have the right players and the right attitude.

I fecking hated the LVG era, but at least we looked like a well coached side under him. We dominated possession in most games but were shocking going forward.

Everyone talks about how Mourinho has improved us, but is it Mourinho or the £300 million we've spent on new players since Jose arrived that's improved us?

Absolutely woeful performance, made all the worse by the fact that Sevilla aren't even that good. I am tired of our inconsistency, and there is literally not one single excuse for it with the amount of talent in our side and the gargantuan amount of money that we have spent. Its a failure this, massively. I am sick and tired of watching my beloved team approach games with meaningless caution when we should be going out there and blowing teams away. Man for man we are miles better than Sevilla, but yet again approached the game cautiously and look where it got us. Pogba has been a huge let down, Sanchez has been a huge letdown, and the overall attitude of that squad is appalling at times. Ever since Sanchez came in, we have looked worse. I am not saying its him, but Jose just has to start him even if hes out of form which means the likes of Rashford and Martial who were playing perfectly well are either left on the sidelines or pushed into the wrong position. He needs to grow some managerial balls and drop Sanchez. Sorry for the rant but I am really annoyed at how weak and pathetic this team can be considering our size, our squad and the money we have spent

The Sevilla coach was in awe at the end, pointing at the stands. Theatre of Dreams for them, in a sense.

Yeah me too. I think the players are just not turning up but like you, my opinion on Mourinho is changing. That's why I want to see what he's going to do next season before going full LvG mode!

We wouldn't have gone past the next round anyway, which is probably why I'm not as upset as I should be.
I thought we had a decent chance depending on the draw. Then again with our away form in big matches any draw would have probably ended there.

You would think with Mata being Spanish and playing in Spain it might have been an advantage having him in the side.

It must have surprised the players.

Bad performances can be explained. There is no such explanation for tonight - what the hell happened in our preparation for this game to result in a 90 minutes like that?

The most damning part of this whole mess is that Sevilla were fecking shite. This is not me saying that they didn't deserve it, 'cause they absolutely did, but they were still shite. We were just so completely and utterly incompetent that we handed them a passage through to the next round, where they're probably gonna get ruined.

Fecking appalling.

They are not. They are a decent team. Having said that we should have been much better given we are at home. Away from home I can understand, but not tonight. We should have dominated them.

He's got to be sacked. He had two attacking plans. Long ball and wait for opposition error. There manager dealt with the former and their players didn't offer the ball up. Mouriniho was happy to keep it like that, didn't think maybe we should try and force an error, he's a coward
Long ball and relied on individual talent to make something happen. Seems surreal...

So what is it? The players not giving a shite or Mourinho setting us up in a terrible, negative way?

Pi...d me right off this
Combination of both.

Manager set-up negatively, tactics too much centered on long ball, and almost all players played so bad not care of fighting.

Mourino's performance is so horrible today.

Rashford, Fellaini, and Lukaku care enough to try and play well. Also, Mata later on. The rest don't give a feck. :wenger:

Black day for United today, absolutely nothing to take out of that game. The one question that comes to me is what is he going to do about Sanchez? Since coming he's shown glimpses of brilliance but overall has been more of a hindrance to the team (IMO).

Pogba and Sanchez don't seem to be able to play together. I would also like to see him dragged a bit more often until he does start to fit in. Jose should definitely not start him in the cup.

If you think those comments are anything other than a distraction from the result, you haven't been watching Mourinho for the last decade. He is protecting his players, for now.

If they can't execute his plans in more big games, however, they'll be thrown under the bus, pretty soon - starting with Pogba.

I wouldn't normally get bent out of shape with the bullshit game plan and tactics of it was a random premier league game but for fecks sake this was to get onto the CL quarterfinals! It's just so bad I can't even think straight.

And to top it all off Jose doesn't show one ounce of humility in his post match comments just some bizarre rationalization of the performance and then has a pop and the fans and the clubs? I mean really this guy is something fecking else.

As of now United are the noisy neighbours, Pool has a weak defence & Chelsea do not have a world class centre forward, once they sort out their mess, United will be duking it out with Arsenal & Spurs for a CL spot. This is what United have become. a wannabe CL team. And Jose s*ucks.

Exactly, and that's a scary thing. If we can't win a game at home on a massive night with the notably better set of players, there's still something very wrong. I would agree were a better team now than before Jose walked in, but I don't think it would have taken a masterclass to get this team to perform better than that.
You are right.

But we go again.

I am not even angry anymore.

Just read this on Football365

"what kind of manager approaches the match like they are playing peak Real Madrid? The kind of manager who could be handed the finest, fastest bike in the Tour de France and then stand on the starting line with stabilisers, that’s who."

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Sevilla are decent going forward & pass the ball very nicely. Maybe not great at the back.

Waiting for them to score, not pressing ourselves = not the best tactic.

Might be crap in top team terms, but they've just slaughtered us, 2nd half - it wasn't like it was close or anything.

I think it started going downhill for us since Pogba was subbed on. We seemed to have lost the midfield afterward.

The second Pogba came on our midfield was overrun, he could barely make a pass. I've seen rooney play better in his final season

Wrong approach by thr manager and bad performence by the players.
What do we expect when we play this way? Hoping to nick a goal by accident instead of earning it.

2 people were my standouts in a very wrong way. Mou for tactics, and Pogba for not giving a sh*t. Not trying. Passing the ball out of the field in the 87th minute, losing the ball and nto reacting. Just shameful.

I think we should do a very important check within ourselves what are we expecting. Mourinho is a manager who will get fine results, but Im not his tactics can win trophies in these times. Pep's City is too good for us to win the title by playing defensivly.

Im not the one who would scream for someones head after 1 bad result and Mourinho is doing fine with us. But is fine enough? Id rather keep the squad and change the manager. Im sure Pogba can do better.

They are not. They are a decent team. Having said that we should have been much better given we are at home. Away from home I can understand, but not tonight. We should have dominated them.

I'm not commentating on them in general, i'm speaking of them tonight. Hence why i said "were" as opposed to "are". They were shite tonight. Utterly average and we gave them a passage through. Again, this isn't me saying they didn't deserve it, because they did. But they were bang average.

Is anyone else still in a kind of daze after watching that?

We were so awful I'm struggling to get my head round it.

Level of disrespect toward Sevilla is concerning here. Spanish league has proven in past 4-5 years that they are better than English league. Sevilla is 5th over there and they do deserve some respect. However, we can't be freaking losing at home to anyone! To anyone! We were dominated in both shots on and off target.

Dude, there's an 11 point gap between 5th and 4th or something.

We had no midfield before it. Fellaini was never near it! Fellaini was on the wings, in their box, more advanced than some of our attackers, but never defending the midfield. There was acres of space throughout the game, Nzonzi had a filed day and bossed the midfield.
This season, I’ve kept seeing teams literally jog across our midfield without being troubled nearly every single game. In first half today, I noticed that Sevilla had to actually work their way through the midfield and felt little threat from them when they got into the final third. And in addition to what you say about Fellaini, I know fir sure I’ve seen him multiple times getting back near the defense, intercepting balls, winning challenges, and being a passing option when others were being pressed. I’m sure he roams around too in order to be an offensive threat, but I hardly felt we were under threat when he did. With Pogba on, I noticed our midfield was back to being wide open.

Well, it doesn't in that respect. It's just easier to rip the shit out of Liverpool fans, since I have no friends who support Seville. But yeah, coming of a impressive performance on the weekend, to this trash. Is unforgivable.

So it's all about bragging rights and not your team progressing ? Of course winning both games is the only answer but you all reckon that United are gauranteed a top four finish anyhow so surely progressing to the QF'S must be a priority ?

You are right.

But we go again.

I am not even angry anymore.
Oh shit, that's why Gerard was defending us, we've actually become Liverpool.
Can we rename this place Red And White Stretford?

I'm going to stop moaning now haha.
It's just a game. It's just a game. It's just a game...

Tonight was unacceptable. Totally unacceptable for a Manchester United team.

I don’t expect 90 minutes of throwing the kitchen sink at teams, no matter who the opposition is. It’s not about playing loose all game. What I do expect though is to see us attack when it’s on and show signs over a 90 minute game that we can attack. At 1-0, 2-0 tonight we started playing. 2-0 against Palace, we started playing and at times looked good. As I say, I’m not expecting a full game of that but at some stage, you’ve got to take initiative and take the game to the opposition.

Sevilla aren’t a team worthy of playing two holding midfielders against and playing on the counter attack. If we’d have played properly tonight we’d have been fine. We don’t have world class centre halves and with Rashford and Lingard in the same 11, quality in the final third will likely be hit and miss. We aren’t set up to play that way anyway.

It’s a horrible night but it’s a familiarly frustrating night. You just knew what was going to happen tonight, we allowed them to settle into the game and the players were beyond lethargic. Ultimately, over the two legs we’ve got what we deserved and that’s bugger all. We’re having the piss taken out of us yet again and I’m sick of it.

The second Pogba came on our midfield was overrun, he could barely make a pass. I've seen rooney play better in his final season
After that wide open pass going out of bounds near end time, it felt like a defining moment that he isn’t ready to be the big time playmaker we were expecting him to be.

N'zonzi post match: "I was surprised we had the ball that much. They had the ball too, but I thought they were going to press a little bit more."
All on Mourinho. Sh!t tactics = sh!t results.

Mou: "I've sat in this chair twice before, with Porto - Man Utd out, with Real Madrid - Man Utd out, so this is nothing new for this football club." #MUFC

SAF didn't blew 300 + Millions worth money in 2 seasons at that time and still he managed 3 champion league finals !! Shame he is disrespecting big man with that comment !!!

Mourinho press conf: "I've sat in this chair twice before. With Porto -- Manchester United out. With Real Madrid -- Manchester United out. So this is nothing new for this football club."
Wow! That is almost on a level with Moyes saying we should aspire to be like Man City after they beat us 3-0 at home. Wrong words Jose, no good.

We got all the way through to the CL knockouts after all this time....and played only EL teams.

We were lucky Ben Yedder only played a third of the game. Had Sevilla lost, I'm sure their manager would have been second guessed for that idiocy

Any post match comments from Mourinho?

I’m gutted about this result.

Not angry, just gutted.

Didn’t expect us to win the Champions League, but we should of beat Sevilla.

The performance tonight seemed completely alien considering the performances we have put in the last few games in the league. Beating Chelsea, coming back from 2-0 down against palace showing true heart, and beating liverpool who are if we are honest a dangerous side, to come and do that tonight?? I am starting to think we were too confident, too arrogant and too sure we would coast it. Well we learned a lesson because we got stung and we absolutely deserved that. If we had come out tonight and played with even half the effort we put in against liverpool, we would have gone through like a breeze. I am so annoyed by that. Manager and players are equally accountable for that sorry shit show tonight, and its us fans that have to deal with the crap now. We dodged a bullet really because had we gone through we would have been absolutely annihilated by the likes of city, madrid, barca....fuming.

Better team won. Which I can't get my head around, cos none of their players would get in our team on paper. Yet they outplayed us so thoroughly. Shows the difference proper teamwork makes. They seemed to want it more. At Old Trafford, that's embarrassing. We just carried on from second half against Liverpool. Played like we had won the tie already. Really hard to take, that performance. They were still attacking more than we were at 2 nil up! Only started trying to slow it when we scored one. Really hard to take...
