EL W Europa League Match Day 7

Manchester United 2:1 Rangers

Post-match discussion

Thu, 23 January 2025

It wasn't a bad performance given how bad we've been in some games. Solid amount of chances created, but also conceded as well. Their first (and biggest) chance came as Collyer lost the ball in dangerous area and 2 minutes later they had another big chance. Afterwards they mostly threatened shooting from distance but still, we're so vulnerable. Maguire really weak at their goal.

If we were good, we'd win this scoring 4 or 5. No disrespect to Rangers it's just easy to see it when you watch the game.

Anyway, one game left and that's at FCSB. We need at least a point to finish in top 8 and have to perform well there. They need a win to go through so will be up for it.

Yeah, there are probably strikers in the Championship who would give us more goal threat then we have now.

I remember the way many fans turned their nose up at Marcus Thuram. Went to inter on a free and doing very well. At worst we could have got on a free and sold after 2 seasons and be less in need of flogging young genuine talent

I didn't watch the game but I hate the way we play. Even we are trailing, our team likes to pass the ball around in the back aimlessly. If we are behind when Alex is still managing, all players automatically becomes more aggressive but current team doesn't have the DNA. It is such a poor state of where we are as a team because of Glazers. How much debt have we paid since Glazers took over? I beginning to fear United will never win the EPL again.

Their lad took his goal really well. Great touch, pinpoint, first time finish.
We don’t have a striker who’s anywhere near that level.

Job done. Made hard work of it through poor finishing but deserved the win for sure.

I will caveat it by saying I don't think Rangers are very good so I'm not going to get too excited, but you can only beat what's in front of you and we needed a win so fair play tonight.

Was following the match via the matchday thread while at work. Someone came to the door, and I got up to answer it. Got back to my desk and saw we'd conceded :(

Had another 2 people come to the door after that, but fortunately it was after the game had already finished

Sorry how can you base this on one goal? I heard the guy hadn’t scored since November. I’m not saying he’s amazing but Hojlund has had some class finishes. The one against Bodo for example was absolute quality.

Pretty much sums it up for me too.

If you gave Dessers that chance ten times, he'd score once. Just so happens he scored it tonight.

He missed an absolute sitter to win the game v Spurs. He's bang average but capable of occasional moments of impressive play

We're a Premier League team with relegation level attacking ability in the squad, and it shows. The fact that our attackers can't score goals overshadows our midfield and defence, and makes the whole team nervous.

I have this weird hunch that once the team regains the belief that the attackers can always get one back at any moment, our goal conceding brainfarts will go down and we'll look more confident across the board.

Horrible game that, watching with the Mrs who's a Rangers fan. Was just desperate to win as I'd never hear the end of it.

Scraped through, maybe could have won by more but once again we just cannot score goals.

Makes me pine for the halcyon days of Ceefax and going to the shops to buy stuff!

Why comment on the game thread, if you did not watch? Not disagreeing with all your points, but many a thread for it.

I'll take any win right now, fun Fergie time winner. Lots of chances, but obviously not good enough and lacking in many areas.

Wish Garnacho scored, to see what his celebration would have been like. Ha.

We need to win games comfortably. Every game is like a chore currently.

With a couple of minutes to go, our players should be taking the ball to the corner flag instead of shooting. Amad needs to be wiser at that.

Any wins a good win at the moment.

No point diving into the performances, we have a terrible team really. Especially in attack. We just arent going to play good freeflowing football.

Maybe just maybe we can just keep scrapping through these fixtures and if we play any decent teams the players feel up for it like against Liverpool and Arsenal. Would be hilarious if we finished bottom 6 in the league and got champions league out of winning this, especially if Chelsea or Man City failed to reach top 4.

It was not even close to our worst game this season and we took 3 points. De Ligt goal should have counted, and lots of close chances.

Given how shit we are, overall, I am not sure why people are complaining about this game in particular.

Only Galatasaray, Bodo Glimt,Vikoria Plzen and Olympiacos currently outside the top 8 can finish ahead of United in the table if the last game is lost away against Steaua Bucharest

Galatasaray have Ajax away.
Bodo Glimt have Nice away
Vikoria Plzen have Athletic Bilbao away

Olympiacos have Qarabağ at home.

People forget some of the easy chances they had. Wish our strikers shoot quickly and accurately like their goal.

We are so freaking unlucky up front. Should have been 4-0

Main takes for me;

1) We have to keep Garnacho, for now at least.
2) We rely on Amad so much.
3) We could go direct a lot more than we do with balls and runs in behind but we over play and play it safe too much.
4) Malacia looked lively when he came on, made a lot of good runs inside and out but wasn't really used or trusted by his team mates.
5) Felt sorry for Hojlund, feel he should've came on a little earlier, he was constantly made warm up for extended times in comparison to the others. Seems he'd obviously he told to get ready at 60 mins but looked disheartened and a little frustrated he wasn't called until 80 mins. I think he'd have suited this game better than Zirkzee.
6) Really don't think Yoro should be starting, he should be developing from the bench.

This is like when one of your mates tells a story and it rambles on and on and you just zone out

Absolute pants. Shocking performance against a bang average team who were forced to play some youngsters. We have no notion about creating goals. Faffing about after being gifted a goal. One goal is never enough as we're guaranteed to mess up royally.
I've got news for you, we;re a bang average teams as well
