EL W Europa League Match Day 7

Manchester United 2:1 Rangers

Post-match discussion

Would we all agree the Rangers goal was more of foul on Maguire than the goal United had disallowed for a so called foul by Yoro?

It was a great touch and finish for their goal. And completely out of nowhere.

We weren’t as bad as people think. A lot more possession and more attempts than them. Finishing is a big issue. With a ST next season we should be finishing games of.

High energy low quality game. Fulham are going to beat us easily if we turn up like this over the weekend

Maybe it was the quality of the opposition but I feel like our set piece routine had changed and each delivery caused chaos. Very similar to this Arsenal approach where you rush the near post.

Can we try Garnacho at 9 and just leave Holjund and Zirkzee as impact subs?

Guy has practically no upper body strength. He'll get swallowed up by centre backs.

What we need to do is put him on finishing training.

Or sell him to Chelsea for 100m (only because selling him for the same price as they sold us Mason Mount is all kinds of fecked up)

Mixed performance. Thought Martinez was terrific on the ball, best in a long time. It also added up to a strong game from Bruno. Amad snd Dalot both pretty good, Garnacho tried and tried, good second half. But de Ligt and Yoro unimpressive, CM pairing lacking in control and impact, and Zirkzee just never got into it.

We need to get a proper striker. As much as we improve our game, it means little without a proper finisher.

Get in there. Was ready to utterly lose the plot after Rangers equaliser but that thankfully only lasted as long as Ally McCoist and the Rangers fans celebrations.

Nothing game - really flat from both teams and painfully slow to watch.

1-0 up scares me - we have errors all over the place. We gifted Rangers chances in the first half and should have conceded, especially when the lad was through after Collyer mis controlled and got robbed.

De Ligt's goal should have counted and an earlier goal would have settled us better, but despite making chances you couldn't say we were totally dominant and in control. You could see them scoring from the 65 minute mark.

A lucky win in what should have been a very easy home game against a very very poor team who are in poor form and injury ridden.

Our issue's wont go away unless we make some signings, our wingback area in particular are shocking. Dalot is a disgrace of a LWB. He does ok, sure. Guys a trier. But he cant cross, he cant take a man on. He's not a great defender. Now i feel for him - he's doing a job in a demanding position on his weaker side. But it's tragic watching him. When he's in advanced positions and gets the ball he literally cannot wait to pass it backwards. Malacia isn't the best LWB around for sure - but he brings natural balance to that side of the pitch. For me - he's a much better option than Dalot.

Good to see Garnacho getting some love from the crowd. He's a bit of a throwback winger really - we should utilise his pace more. A proper talent but feel he is being limited in this hybrid 10 role - it doesnt suit him but he;s grafting for sure.

We over rely on Amad - painfully so. Just give him the ball and hope he produces magic every chance we get. He's being marked out of games at the moment - doubled or tripled up. Another great showing from him but he has to played as a 10 to drift around. He's our best 10 and best RWB at the moment so a tricky one for Amorin.

Thought Collyer done well - grew into the game. Good to see and gives us another option there as Casemiro is cooked and Mainoo is off the boil. Great to see.

Overall it was an ok performance - just worrying we play so slow and predictably. We make hard work of easy situations with sloppy slow lazy passes and bad decision making. Should have been an easy 2/3 - 0 victory. Yet we made life hard and bring more scrutiny on us.

First half was quite ponderous. Second was a lot more energetic. Still a lot of issues to iron out with just how poor we are sometimes with distribution and how hesitant we are to move off the ball. We always seemed a million miles away from one another but showed good resolve to win.

Eriksen had a good game I thought and was very energetic considering his age. Think we need to utilise his skills on ball more from the bench in the final quarter of games if things are not going our way more often.

Thought Utd were very lucky in a game they should be winning very comfortable.

Rangers missing 7 first team players and 1 suspended then losing 3 to injury during the match and having to play schoolboys.

The boy Raskin is a baller. Won the ball back constantly and they noted he has more recoveries than any other player in the Europa League. Won’t be there long.

A win is a win.

Thought the atmosphere sounded good. Rangers fans travelled in numbers.

Apart from Rangers missing players, how were United lucky?

Och aye.

After sleeping on it, last nights performance is even more depressing. We are so low on quality, such a slow side. We lack intensity, speed and brains.

In total need of a striker, zirkzee is not the solution. Bruno was brilliant in the midfield thought Collyer done really well and was more solid than mainoo.

On a separate note the stewarding was ridiculous were petrified to put the rangers fans in the home end out especially when the were starting fights

A good win, but the same issues are clear, same bad start, same mistakes in defense, same non existent pressing, same bad passes, same 0 creativity and passing options around the opponents box. Only plus would be set pieces where we looked dangerous.

A two different half's; the first we dominated without really threatening, despite the disallowed goal and one ripping shot from Martinez. In the second we looked more dangerous at times but never really dominated, as we had in the first half.

Second half 1-0 up by means a keeper error, then gradually the nerves set in and you almost knew as poor as Rangers were they would get one break and they did.

Bruno to the rescue in the dying minutes.

Thought Toby Collyer showed a lot of promise throughout, Martinez almost back to his old self, glimpses of Amad at his best, and of course captain Bruno to the rescue. The rest bang average.

Whilst we stay in this competition it gives Ruben an opportunity to try out variations, he needs all the time he can get.

Re : Rangers fans in home end.
We where in North East quadrant , dozens of them in there.. one chap sat directly behind us drinking cider and singing just after kick off got escorted out but appeared again in 2nd half a few blocks away where it all kicked off when they scored .. Can’t understand why police not in the ground ? Rather than sat in the dozens of vans outside the ground during the game. Stewards are not paid enough money or trained to deal with that amount of away fans.

The amount of away fans in with us was embarrassing. I had people standing with me in east lower who said they had been ousted from their normal seats (there were about 30 of them).
Stewards just said there was nothing they could do.
Police just came in and filmed with a large presence in the concourse and came into pick individuals off who got too much.
We all said if it was the other way round and we did that at ibrox we would have got decked.
It looked like it was happening all over.
They gave an excellent effort of murder on the dancefloor which helped them!

loved the last gasp late win against them lot. But the matchday experience last night was awful.

Everything about OT was so bad.. the queues to get in under the stretty end were huge and not moving, missed the first 10 mins, people getting very very angry in the queue

the concourse in the stretty end lower isnt fit for purpose. Its always too packed to move, nowhere to stand, takes forever to get served.

Not to mention the rubbish on the pitch, and the amount of Rangers fans in the home ends.

A disaster from the club again. . I was always for keeping Old Trafford, but this season is changing my mind. The ground just isnt fit for purpose. Its like a ground thats designed for 20k people but lets in 50k. The services just seem overwhelmed each game.

They're both super soft, but if they rule the first out they have to be consistent. The problem is Maguire's reaction, it will make the refs mind up on the spot. Personally I think both are fair goals, it's not like he properly shoves Maguire, it's very weak.

The performance was ok, if we had any decent Goalscorer up front it would of been 3/4/5

A new ground won't necessarily solve all these issues.

The queues are mad 15 minutes pre kick off because there's feck all to do near and in the ground pre match so most people stay in town until the last moment.

The rangers fans got into the home ends because the ticket policy is a joke and they've outpriced a lot of our traditional hardcore who wouldn't have dared given tickets to away fans.

Take the point around the concourses but even in a completely new ground, I really doubt the owners are gonna care that much about where us ordinary folk go at half time. I'd imagine the hospitality areas will be nice though.

For all the faults, last night was great fun. It was moody and tense outside the ground. The goon when the winner went in was special.

By scoring in stoppage time when a defender fell asleep letting Bruno run behind him.

The ruled out goal was a nonsense. Hit the post. Butland made some good saves.

We weren't good but Rangers nicking a point would have been a smash and grab.

I've always wondered whether Jack Butland could have come good for us, seems he has now.
Cheers mate.

First time I've ever had to queue for more than 5 minutes at W13 last night, took half an hour to get in, stewards going overboard with the searches took about 3/4 minutes per supporter. Half an hour before KO should be plenty of time to get in.

I’ve criticised this team and the performance plenty this season but today we were much better and did control the game for large parts of it.

DeLigts disallowed goal
Garnacho off the post
Maguire’s header
Ugarte’s header
2x goals

Those were all very good chances and on another day could all have gone in.

I just think most are down on the team (and fairly so) so going with the negative.

+ Garnacho's chance from Dalot's cutback when he never looked up and smashed it right down the center of the goal and their CB headed it over the bar.

I think you're right on the money with your last line, we could've easily scored 5 yesterday yet this thread is still full of people who say it was a terrible performance and that we can't attack so it feels like they're judging this game mostly on the final result combined with the overall vibe of the whole season instead of what actually happened in the game.

And I'm not implying we were brilliant by any stretch, but saying we were shite and that it was a shocking performance is just ridiculous.

I was in the safe standing section in the North East quadrant and the moment I walked on to the concourse all I could hear around me was Scottish accents.

It was obviously going to go off. At least we didn't let come away with a point.

Given our standard of play this season we actually played very well, apart from the fried-brain defending by Maguire on the Rangers goal. We created chances we should have finished off and we had a goal wrongly disallowed. But most importantly we snatched victory from the claws of a draw in stoppage time.

Not even close to vintage, of course, but it was a match we deserved to win against a highly motivated opponent who came looking for scalp.

Martinez and Bruno to the rescue!

- Best overall performance from Garnacho in a long time. He kept the ball in tight spaces, made good passes, created chances, and always looked a threat. However, this was against a side that would struggle in the PL so I take it with that in mind.
- Amad is getting cocky which is good and bad.
- I think we have a new number 1.
- Maguire is just better than DeLigt as CCB even though he does make mistakes here and there.
- Please buy a LWB and striker this transfer period.
- Collyer did well and I would like him to start with Ugarte as DMs and give Mainoo a try as AM with Bruno. We know he can score. If it works we could have Amad at RWB, a new LWB, and a new Striker. With the right players we could be exciting again.
