EL W Europa League Match Day 7

Manchester United 2:1 Rangers

Post-match discussion

My biggest issue is still how little thrust we have as a team going forward. If it's not Amad combining and occassionally Bruno, there's essentially 0 pass and move in the entire team. It's static as feck. Mainoo and the other CM's are just happy to circulate the ball aimlessly and jog around in possession. Defenders apart from Martinez just shuttle it side to side. And then eventually the onus is on Bruno to play a long ball, or Amad to make something happen on his side because god knows our LWB won't do anything.

No they're not at all. Look at the table
Athletic Bilbao who got battered 4-1 to Ole's Besiktas and Lazio are the 2 best performing sides. United and Spurs are the 2 favourites and biggest names by far. After them you have... Lyon? Frankfurt who just sold their best player? Rangers are 13th/36 sides, so by definition... Yes one of the better sides. Anderlecht and Steaua Bucharest?

The Europa league is filled with mediocre sides this season, unless we get drawn to Spurs, Bilbao or Lazio, we'll be playing against Rangers level opposition.

How many individual errors do we have that lead to goals? While I’m probably exaggerating it feels like at least one a game.

Desperately need someone to finish off guilt-edge chances, like from 5 yards. Thank God for Bruno but he simply.ply cannot be the only one to bail this team out?

Played well in parts, but against a below average Rangers side, just don't think we will progress beyond the last 26 unless some major players come in (they won't) so it's no Europa league next season!

This reminds me of the LVG era.
So slow, so predictable, obsessed with passing back and passing around at the back.
We can’t finish, we want to sell our exciting players and we can’t keep a clean sheet as defenders and keepers are prone to mistakes.
At least we won so yay.

Thought we were decent, which I'll take at the moment.
Controlled most of the game and could have scored 5/6 goals with a decent striker.

I couldn't believe how slow United were in possession. It looks like a massive lack of confidence?

It wasn’t a good performance but should have won comfortably. This disallowed goal was ridiculous but poor finishing and another terrible individual error made hard work of it.

we absolutely desperately need a striker even a half decent loan to see us through to may

Desperately needed that injury time winner from Bruno. Should’ve been comfortable before they equalised, which every single one of us knew was coming after missing some chances and not having enough urgency.

Looking at the Bruno celebration. Who was that guy who barged into Bruno as he went to the crowd? Hojlund shoved him away and he kinda walked off after that.

And Man United is another one of those mediocre sides in the EL. If we win it, there ain't gonna be nothing about it.
Let's not forget this was far from their best and available team so this confidence coming outta nowhere is amusing to me.

Enjoyed that game, kind of a mad one. We struggled to maintain pressure still but we also had some good spells, second half in particular. Plenty of rough edges but nothing like the recent home defeats in the league.

Huh? I'm saying we should've won by about 5 goals today if we could finish. And I'm saying play similarly but just finish better and we would be entirely fine in this competition. As of now we are favourites for the competition, and rightfully so, as we are actually capable of lifting our game to a level that not a single other team in the competition is capable of doing. The consistency problems that plague us in the league don't really apply in cup competitions, which is why we've done well in cups the past few seasons (and again this season).

We'll find out soon enough.

Massive relief! Overall, we were the better team and deserved our win, but it was dramatic. We were on the end of another poor refereeing decision with a shocking call to disallow De Ligt’s goal. We got the lead, but blew so many chances and eventually were punished. You knew that there would be Rangers fans in the home end but it was shocking to see what felt like a third of the stand being from the opposition team and jumping up when they scored. So after Bruno’s brilliant winner, it felt euphoric to stick to in their faces!

Was at the game. Too slow second half. Too effing slow. Rangers are crap and there for the taking.
On another note, way too many Rangers fans where I was sitting. There was a bit of bother when Rangers scored.
United have got to stop this happening.

Nice to see someone else's keeper have a howler for a change.

We need to win our final match to assure ourselves of going straight into the final 16 now.

Either way, I think our ceiling in this competition is final 8. Eventually we'll run into an opponent that can convert their chances, and then it's curtains for us.

"vile, racist, scum"?
I was on a tram on the way to the game with a load of drunk Rangers fans and their sectarian anti-Irish/Catholic chanting caused me to get off and catch another tram.
So in answer to your question I saw yes to vile and racist.

There is no chance that this slow passing we have in possession is not by design. All the freking time. It has been going on for so long. Are we trying to put oppos (and fans) to sleep? Football is supposed to be fun.

We taught him everything he knows

Mmm. Strange game. We missed a host of chances. Deligt's goal was unlucky to be disallowed. Maguire didn't look quite fit. Collyer was good, certainly got a lot of energy. We really do need a centre forward but it there were spurned chances by loads of 'em, I think the anxiety makes them snatch at those chances. We win a couple of games, those chances will be taken
