Manchester United 1:2 Norwich City

Post-match discussion

I don't think he knows how to do that. Today was an embarrassment. No attempt to play football whatsoever. Just playing the hit and hope game cross after cross after cross.

That's comparable to the Fulham game, with Moyes in charge. Basically, this was the point at which I felt that Moyes needed to go.
The similar thing happened for me, today. We were completely out of ideas. Our players and manager has absolutely no idea how to score against Norwich and just gave up.

Yeah, well, he also gave his old club a double over us, along with Liverpool and City, shipping two 0-3 losses against them at home.

The comparisons to Moyes are so facile.
I was only being half serious, but what we're seeing right now is not good enough.

I'm surprised at the reaction in here.

We actually played relatively good football today, much more attacking minded and fluent. We need a proper striker to lead the line and actually stick it in the net, but the intent was actually there for once.

Is it good enough? No, of course not. We lost. But at least it was better than the terribly boring football we've been dishing up for most of the season. Although right at the end it went a bit shit with the players looking lost unfortunately.
I agree.
Our attack is just weak! No clinicality hurts consistently. This forwardline apart from Martial, doesnt believe it can score goals........

players arent good enough

give him time

he's fixed our defense

bayern barca foundations.

Philisophy

buy in january.

What crap excuse have I missed?

It's a process which I won't bother to explain because you all are too obtuse to understand it.

I'm half inclined to think LvG had Stoke in mind when selecting his team today.

Oh, I get you, so he planned for us to score only 1 goal today, so he could save our goal rush, for the Stoke game. Gotcha ;)

Amazed if he survives this.

Not been one to call his head thus far but this just felt like one of them moments. Another Fulham.

It's not good enough. Out of an easy CL group and 1 point from West Ham and Norwich at home and Bournemouth away. No win in 6.

It's the same every game. We start well, press high and look attacking but it fades after ten minutes without us scoring and then struggling.

After the season he's had and the stuff he's said I'm not sure I want Mourinho here but I've gotta feeling it could be LVG out / Jose in very very soon.

No win in 6 sounds better than it really is. Please add we have lost 3 straight.

@Twigginater "It's like our midfield are non existent."

What midfield? The not useless one decided to play with on sitting immobile midfielder. You are either trolling or have no clue of football. Might sound harsh but did you watch the match?

Whoscored says we had 52 crosses today. Moyes' infamous game against Fulham had 81 crosses, and that was with much more direct football.

I reckon if you swapped the time we spend playing it from side to side in defence with the directness we showed under Moyes we'd produce similar statistics.

Basically, LVG is showing as much creativity in his instructions as Moyes, including playing Fellaini at #10.

9 behind Leicester
Level with Palace
Watford and West Ham hot on our heels
Losses to Middlesbrough, Swansea, Bournemouth and Norwich

He's been given time and plenty of financial support.
Crap to watch.
He has to go. He has to go now.

every time we play against poor defenders we make them look like a Franco Baresi and Nesta combo.

prior to their win today Norwich had one win in 11. Let that sink in.

We had zero effort where their keeper had to make a difficult save.

Surely Van Gaal is done.

This is the big problem I have with our team.
We make ordinary teams look like Barcelona or Bayern. It's as if these lesser teams (near the bottom of the league) are quite confident that they will beat us, so let us have the ball and do the pass-pass stuff, then when they get the ball, they attack hard and shoot at our goal. Some of those shots go in. And we end up losing, despite having huge amounts of possession.

I still think LVG is a great coach and he has greatly improved us from the Moyes era but we desperately need a big change to stop this rot. A fresh restart. We definitely won't win anything if things are to stay the same.

Finally turned now. Problem is, who can replace him at this moment? No top coach will move during the season.

If Ancelotti can be enticed, he'd make a good caretaker until the summer. But if he's already agreed a contract with Bayern, I'd imagine they will want him to learn German and get acquainted with their set up, the league etc..
Mourinho.

I do like this latest system of having a midfield of 1 person...who's 34 years old.

I've never seen a manager come up with a system before that allows their team to neither be able to attack or defend, despite having all of the ball, and regardless of how well or badly the players perform. So he at least deserves some credit for the sheer difficulty involved in managing to be that stupid.

Imagine how well it'd work if Carrick was still playing badly.

It looked like we played better because Norwich were actually very bad. They were gifting possession in their own half for fun and couldn't clear the ball outside of the corner. This is why us losing is even more pathetic. The players are not training close triangle passing and one-twos. You can see by their positioning around the penalty area. They simple are either forbidden to do it or it is not being rehearsed.

BTW, we have lost the match, but we did dominate possession. So I guess, LVG can cling to the possession stat.
Maybe someone needs to tell our players that the aim of the game is to outscore the opposition.
Our team of multi-millionaires should have some shame. I feel embarrassed for them.

I honestly can't believe we lost, at home, to Norwich. Norwich have an abysmal away record.

But we have to look at this in perspective. We lost to Norwich. NORWICH!!! And before that we lost to Bournemouth.

Norwich deserved to win because they capitalized on their chances. But let's be fair, they didn't have to do much to beat us.

Obviously they just went through us.

If this is not sabotage, I don't know what it is.

Do we have any purpose when we cross the ball. Does memphis even know that he needs to look for a team mate when he decides to cross. Overhit the crosses at everyturn. Useless! Not just him, all of them apart from de gae and martial. Rooney should just stop playing. We have no spine. Can't believe I'm saying that a utd team has no spine. No grit!

Yes, I did wonder how much of it was us playing better and how much of it was Norwich being bad. But at the end of the day we did show more attacking intent than we have for quite some time. We were getting the ball forward faster, we were looking to swing it out wide into attacking areas, etc.

With the amount of good balls being played into the middle today (and quite a lot of them were good balls, not just hopeful pointless crosses), we almost certainly would have scored a number of goals if we'd had a proper centre forward with a presence who's first instinct is to attack the middle of the goal.

What was LVGs post match interview like? He needs to step aside.

Not go good enough from the player or the manager. Giggs was making a real statement at the end there, putting as much distance as possible between him and the rest of the coaches. Not enough determination to win at the end when we should have been pushing hard for the equalizer.

Played alright to start with before getting hit on the break, which is happening far too often now. I still think putting Fellaini in midfield is massive part of that problem. Leaves us far too open as he stays up the pitch.

Not too many positives to take form that tbh... Martial got a goal... so there's that.

Had some nice play during the game, but same players letting the side down.

We can all choose a different starting 11, but not sure it would have made much difference. After about 83 minutes, the team did not believe they could get anything. I do not understand the number of changes to the first team, especially when they are all coming back from injuries.

I would gladly accept 10 GBP for Rooney, Jones and Fellani. They really do not offer anything anymore, that is the only issue I have with LVG. I had same issue with Fergie when he showed too much loyalty to under performing players. These players just do the basics poorly, time to replace.

From thinking December would put us in a good position for the second half of the season, we are now in a poor position.

People were always saying well as soon as the attack comes good we'll be keeping clean sheets and burying teams. Never did they consider that if the defence went to shit and the attack failed to improve we'd end up losing to Norwich City at home.

I WAS (foolishly) in the optimistic camp - thought Dec would see some points go on the board - West Ham, Bournemouth, Norwich - oh and we are out of the CL as well. Tougher fixtures around the corner, the League Table is quite congested & competitive, and we're heading down it.

Not good, is it?

I don't care about Giggsy's off the field stuff - I also think he might be a decent Manager for us, knows the club, knows the League, has a reputation

We have never wanted Mourinho apparently so would be surprised to see that change.

The transfer recruitment of Moyes & LVG has been dreadful, adding slow players to a squad that is already getting older & slower. Exceptions being Martial & Depay, one of whom is crap.

Things are quite bad aren't they?

Looking through our squad and there's too many players that I have high hopes for but realistically, aren't going to give us what we need in a game like this.

I like Herrera, but the fact fans are desperate for him to come on says it all. He's a likeable enough fella but we seem porous when he's on the pitch.

Mata again. Love the lad. He simply has been awful this year. Just isn't doing enough, he has to be dropped soon (I have no idea who for). Something needs to happen now. The good news is we have the January transfer window coming up, so there is options out there. Get in some fecking pace in this forward line and lets give it a proper go.
I'd say we were pretty porous before he came on.

yeah..bobby charlton is from a different era. The game is not the same. Great player in the history of United...but no judge of the game now. Stick to his ambassador role...don't meddle in the appointment of a manager or players.

He's earned the right to influence important decisions within Manchester United, if those decisions have an impact on the traditions, principles and morality of the club imo.
