Manchester United 1:2 Norwich City

Still can't believe Man Utd lost today at home against Norwich.

Don't think Van Gaal will last much longer. Results have been getting worse and worse, and don't look like they are picking up. Today wasn't that bad to start with, we had some good passing moves and put Norwich on the back foot a lot of the time but there were no chances at all, and it's clear as day that Premier League managers have Van Gaal's system down to a formula. Unless he changes his approach, we will probably continue in a similar vain, but I can't see him doing anything different.

People were always saying well as soon as the attack comes good we'll be keeping clean sheets and burying teams. Never did they consider that if the defence went to shit and the attack failed to improve we'd end up losing to Norwich City at home.
Goes back to glass half full or half empty

IIRC when asked if he has the players that to do what he wants them to do, he responded something along the lines of "yes, we've shown it this season when we were top of the league; now you see what lack of confidence can do to players".

A lack of confidence which definitely, 100% wasn't caused by stifling their creativity and giving out about individuals in post match interviews Louis...

Suckered again by a team on the counter. We're so easy to play against for a well organised team defensively, not enough individual inspiration.

One postive was that Memphis finally worked out that varying whether he cuts inside or goes outside gives the defender a lot harder job defending against him. Shame he can't cross v well with his left!

I need my head checking.

I honestly thought we'd beat Norwich fecking City at Old fecking Trafford with ease.

Whenever I see a possession stat on the telly I want to throw a chair through it. Not just United games, any game.
Same. I genuinely believe opposition teams let us keep the lion's share of possession as they know we'll do nothing with it and they can just hit us on the break. There is no "possession battle" as the commentators like to call it.

Watching that interview, he's a broken man, almost pleading for another chance. I honestly do feel sorry for him, you can tell he's worked his socks off but it's just not going right for him. He needs to leave, retire in his villa in Portugal and live happily and stress free.

I feel sorry for him too but yes he needs to go and live in luxury and let someone else take over the reins. Somehow, I doubt he will go without being pushed though.

Hate to say it, but he probably needs to go. It's looking very very bad for him, and as a result, for us. It's very apparent when a team isn't playing as a cohesive unit, and that's the case with us. Disjoint, sloppy and painfully mediocre. It's time for the club to reconsider his position, and look at it's options.

Thought he'd see out his contract but the sequence of results and exit from the ECL is indefensible and the shit football, glaring inadequacies in areas that the average man in the street identified pre season and inflexible approach mean he's the author of his own demise.

Decided not to watch today, and had a good laugh when I looked up the result. What an embarrassment this season has become.

Will not be watching the next match either.

Norwich had allowed 47 shots on target in their previous seven away league games. Just the two from United at Old Trafford.

We make even the most porous teams look defensively solid.

Our attacking front 4 are not very good. This has been proved beyond doubt.
I don't completely blame LVG for that BUT LVG should've been astute enough to buy better attackers in Summer.
Instead, he took a huge risk and put all his eggs into Rooney's basket. The result? 2 EPL goals and LVG on the verge of the sack.

Thought we started very well today but again failed to score the first goal. We can't even use injuries as an excuse today as only Darmian, Shaw and Lingaard were missing.

I've been a big supporter of LVG but if he can't see what a crucial player Ander Herrera should be for us I give up.

Cheers:
  • Had a terrific English cheddar and dry coppa snack on hand
  • Pre-game I had a nice chicken biscuit for breakfast
  • Martial is cool as feck
Jeers:
  • I'm growingly feeling conflicted about our management
  • I'm also growing more confident that Rooney's contract is an anchor to our growth
  • I only feel confident about a top 4 place because Chelsea is a hot mess.

Just saw the following in the Guardian's comments section by one 'wheresme':

'If there's any Man United fans out there fancy a holiday, I hear you can't beat The Canaries at this time of year.'

Originally I was pissed I wasn't able to catch the game. Had a live-score on my phone on and can only imagine what the game looked like.

I can't believe we lost this match, I know we've been very poor recently but we should be winning games like this. I don't really know what the answer is to solving our problems but I don't think sacking the manager is the definitive answer.

I thought we started very brightly, dominated possession and looked threatening. Years ago it would have been one of those matches where we eventually get the goal and go on to win 3-0 or something. After a good start we just dropped away though. Tempo and movement stopped and Norwich got comfortable defending. We are absolutely hopeless at stopping counter-attacks so I wasn't shocked to see us concede.

Even when Martial scored I didn't think we'd pull it level. And even if we did 2-2 at home to Norwich would be a bad result still. Poor from everyone, only Martial can be cut slack. Hopefully LvG's last game in charge.

The table has flattered us most of the season, we are in a mess, players and manager aren't good enough simple as that. It's going to get worse as well, can't see us winning either of our games over Christmas.

A bit odd, but fair enough.

The positives: 1) 70% possession. 2) Martial scored.
3) ???
The negatives:
1) another loss
2) playing shit on stick football
3) many, many more.

I don't see "for God's sake, when is the kickoff?" threads anymore. That speaks volumes.

does the possession stat really matter to you? It ain't hard to lead the league in that department if most your passes are backwards to your keeper or sideways leading nowhere. Btw we also lead the league in those stats as well.

Van Gaal conned us all to think it's a good thing but i saw/read analysis where it showed the negative side to that stat.

i personally always thought the possession stat is overrated and after i saw how Real took Bayern apart it was a total confirmation.

The energy levels of LVG are way down now. He must be scratching his head now, wondering why his philosophy of high levels of possession isn't working.

I feel sorry for him but nevertheless, he ought to just retire

It was pretty clear that Norwich were sitting back on us, thus leading to some early and wholly unjustified optimism over our attacking play. We didn't create anything and barely troubled the Norwich keeper.

Before the match I genuinely thought we'd be up for this one but as soon as the starting XI was announced there was no doubt we were going to drop points.

Mourinho will have his work cut out for him but I can still see us clawing out fourth place at the end of May.

Michael Caley's expected goal (xG) model says this:

Anybody see Roy Keane walk out after 70-71 minutes? That was a pretty damning moment.

You don't need to read the stats of a CL match to discover that possession means squat. So many of our matches against Arsenal under Fergie were the same. We sat back and defended and allowed them to come close to our penalty box; then when they lost possession there we hit them on the counter with lots of pace. More often than not we dismantled them with this strategy.

I have reached that stage where I was during Moyes' tenure where we won it was great but if we lost I was upset but at least the silver lining was that it meant that fraud was closer to the exit from my club. I feel the same for LVG. I think he needs to resign and leave with dignity but if he does not then a couple of losses can actually be good long term in that the board might sack him.

That is quite simply embarrassing glory hunting shite. Even if your team is playing badly a true fan would still have the backbone to watch and cheer on his team. At least then any criticism they made would be based on an honestly formed opinion. I often wonder what 'supporters' of this ilk would be like if their team were one of most of the other 91 teams in the English leagues.

What can one say after yet another defeat? I don't think we can see how this will play out.

Our next fixtures are tough - stoke & then Chelsea.

We need a change - but will it come.
