Post-match discussion

Didn't expect anything different, if I'm honest. I would've; however, liked to see us being more a threat on the counter, and the few counters we did have, had to be better.

As I said, this was always going to be a tough task, especially with the injuries we have.

Still quite annoyed that we dropped points against Fulham, but hopefully we can kick on from here.

I'd like to see ten Hag try Bruno as a false 9 a couple more times to see how that'll materialises, especially against teams we have more of the ball against.

Decent solid performance first half. A wonder goal from Rashford, you would hope he would kick on with some confidence but he reverted to dross again. With better touches we could have had at least another goal.
second half the constant city pressure finally opened us up. Lindelof made to look like a dummy by foden As lindelof invited him inside. Amrabat struggles in big games and at fault For the second.

only relief is it wasnt 6-0 as many expected. We have been miles behind city for years and the gap is ever wider,.

This isn’t a game to judge anybody. The Fulham one was far worse for me, on paper we didn’t have a chance and once they scored we were gonna struggle to get anything out of the game.

Our best 2 defenders out, no one who can hold onto the ball and absolutely zero threat up front, as well as nothing on the bench.
Up against City's strongest 11.
All things considered it could have been a lot worse.

Our league position right now flatters us.

We are poorly coached, the players we have are, mostly, not capable of maintaining the required effort for 90 minutes, and are mentally fragile.

Which is why we collapse against every decent team we play.

Just got to take our medicine.

Pretty extraordinary what we’ve been reduced to as a club.

Just got to hope that with INEOS in place, this is the beginning of a long road back. But they can’t undo the suffering that United fans have been put through.

Our problems were laid bare-no athleticism in midfield, no strength up front, half the defense out injured, no quality on the bench. You can't go up against a vastly superior team in that condition and expect anything.

But even then the players on the pitch manage to disappoint. Rashford not going for duels, McT not going for through balls, Amrabat gifting a goal-the quality just isn't there. It's just not there. It hasn't been there for a long, long time. Maybe it'll improve with the new ownership. But it'll still take a long time.

If it was Jose, Moyes etc in charge of that performance they’d be hounded out of the club, never mind the other humiliations we’ve had under ETH, we’re light years away from City in terms of quality and determination,

all in all im not even that fussed tbh it’s a step in the lesser of two evils winning the league as I’ve zero faith in Arsenal going the distance, hopefully 115FC can do the mutants next week

Special mention to Rashford for that embarrassing dive never mind everything else he done after the 7th minute

Set up for 0-0, get a fluke goal and still lose.

We respect them like they're prime 70's Brazil and we're San Marino just on a day out.

Rashford after his goal thought he'd done enough, or just doesn't have anything else to his game anymore. Running in straight lines towards the opposing defenders with no clue at all. Huge rebuild needed.

xg is for nothing in many cases. the chance from rassford when he is 1 on1 with the gk is 0 xg but in fact a top chance if he just controls the ball better. the chance from garnacho is a 0xg but would have been a pen or goal if he is one step quiker. stats are nice but not always telling the whole story.

Nowhere near as bad as I feared and we actually defended pretty well and there were some good performances: Varane, Evans (other than the moment that got Varane booked) and Dalot. McT was very good defensively. Possibly Onana's best game for us although I sort of - sort of - wonder if he could have stopped Foden's second.

We paid for mucking up two or three breakaways when we were still in front, mainly Rashford, who faded after scoring. Fernandes was anonymous again.

In the end there was just a huge gulf in quality. Almost every one of their players is so much better than ours and the way they keep possession is scary. But we did look to have a plan and I don't care what anyone says, Rashford was fouled just before their equaliser: soft yes, but still a foul. Plus I thought you weren't allowed to follow through in a tackle ad Edison did...

In truth, we never had a chance without a centre forward and the fact that the club doesn't have any reinforcements in that area - and no one in the academy to step up - is damning

Pathetic performance and tactics.

If ever a match highlights that we've gone backwards over the last few years and regressed it's this one.

Need a fresh start in the summer, start with the manager.

Too many players who can't run, tackle, pass and make bad decisions. Depressing to see them walking around when losing a game.

Am I being unreasonable but I think it’s a foul on Rashford by Walker and also a foul by Ederson on Garnacho. If I’m wrong, tell me why.

The difference was players quality and managers quality, especially the changes happening when substitutes came on. Ten Hag was left in the dust by Pep's moves.
Imo
This is the biggest difference for me. We have Jonny Evans who - though he's done a good job for us - has absolutely no business being at a club that we are supposed to me, and Sofyan Amrabat who is a journeyman at best.

We've gone backwards even since last season and it's getting embarrassing.

Edit: oh and Lindelof at left back. 27 shots to our 3 they had. We are every definition of mid table now

What's mad is we had clear cut counter opportunities we fecked up.

Just shows the gulf in class at the moment.

This annoyed me so much. Garnacho made like 20 runs behind his defender, but the players simply don't see it. And if they finally do, he's already offside.

Rashford scores a classic. Then he heads the ball into himself when through, then he misses the ball on the half volley, then he blows himself over claiming an invisible foul despite having a great opportunity. Amrabat is the best defensive midfielder we’ve ever seen and it was great management to take off our only player that looks like at striker for Anthony

We have had a rot in this club since SAF left, it's been made worst by no clear vision or strategy from the top. All they have done is backed their managers with 'their' players who we have now amassed into a group of highly paid poor squad who struggle both mentally and physically. Only changes from the the top (which they are doing) and 'open heart' changes to the squad will change anything. Either way I don't see ETH here next season, as he's just another manager who brought his ex players to the team and failed to deliver anything. As soon as the structure above the manager is in place it's time to bring a manager in to deliver what we want, not to back another manager to sign and build what they want.

In the last 10 years, both clubs spent similar amounts of money on players...look at we are now...the difference is incommensurable.
I could see some Championship teams playing better football than us, injuries aside.

In the last 10 years none of us have any idea how much city have spent.

Because the organization is utterly corrupt.,

Just reading this thread pisses me off, because it feels like so many are just accepting of the result. Watching that 90 minutes fecking infuriated me. We just got embarrassed by a rival for what feels like the umpteenth time in recent years

We are beyond embarrassment at this stage, do City and Liverpool even see us as real rivals any more , they hammer us most of the time play them. We are seen by them as maybe a banana skin at best. And some of our fans even celebrate if we finish within two or three goals and treat it as a good day.

Xg is one of the dumbest things in football! By Xg reckoning, Rashford has pretty much no way to scare and Haaland's miss was, according to Xg, easier than a penalty. Dumb. Would you apply football to science? No... so apply science to football

this - 100%

Edersons tackle was as clean as they come, sadly.

We got what we deserved. When you play on the counter you have to have the bravery and composure to go for it when the game opens up.

About 70 minutes then ball went to McTominay on a turnover, we had four players attacking the space and he went back to defence.

It wasn't the only time we p'd away a counter attacking opportunity either.

When you do that multiple times against a team like City you can't complain when you get beat. We had the chances to test them but too often retreated into panic or cowardliness.

Coward football is losing football. Especially at Wastelands. The attacking intent wasn't there in enough players to make it count when it could've. Made me a bit nostalgic for Ole ball, frankly.

We literally played City worse than many bottom of the table sides but you have people shrugging their shoulders saying "ah well what can you do"

It's basically what I expected, which in many ways makes it feel even more disappointing.

I suppose if you stand back, and don't look at it in the context of the wider season, which has been incredibly disappointing, then it wasn't a terrible performance given how many players we're missing.

I really wish we'd offered more on the counter though. City realised we weren't at it and had no fear when pushing right up. Rashford's goal was brilliant, but he was terrible after that. Some really amateur bits of play. Garnacho wasn't much better, but he's only 19. Rashford is meant to be our star attacker, but I think Højlund is very quickly taking that mantle. We miss him more than we'd miss Rashford right now.

This annoyed me so much. Garnacho made like 20 runs behind his defender, but the players simply don't see it. And if they finally do, he's already offside.
Even Antony had a chance and Bruno didn't release the ball quick enough and the chance was gone.

We also kept two of the best players in the PL quite for the best part of 90 minutes: de bruyne and halaand

Great goal but we threw it away. Ten Hag changed things so City could dominate us, I just can't wait for him to be gone. Awful tactician.

We were never holding on at 0-1, we needed another and when we were in good positions picked the wrong pass.Subs killed any little chance we had of nicking a draw.Arambat is absolutely awful, that was the most annoying thing that Haaland scored after doing nothing all game.
Ah well.

Breathing a sigh of relief we didn't get our shit stomped out and just lost 3:1.

This is Manchester United. The new normal.

Oh I said it in the matchday thread, for as frustrating as us sitting around our own box in these big games under Ole was, there's no doubt we had a clear plan in how to counter when the moment presented itself. That sure as feck isn't present anymore
