Manchester United 4:2 Manchester City

Post-match discussion

Sun, 12 April 2015

I said this if city went with 2 upfront they would be killed. Milner lost discipline and drifted further forward, and city loving the 2 upfront was the reason why united had loads of space to just suffocate city to death, fergie used to call it it the carousal with Barcelona, city experienced that today and they could not get off it

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32277578

Phil Neville highlighting united's numbers in midfield creating a box where they just blitzed city all over the park, city like I have said hate possession teams, and this happened once again.

I did laugh at one saying city's seiling is higher than united's, well united have blown through city's ceiling and raised the seiling where city have to reach now

My brother was asking me if van Gaal felt really happy and excited about us getting the win against Man. City, and I told him that he just took it as another win. Unsurprisingly, my brother was shocked, expecting van Gaal to be full of joy at beating Man. City as if we aren't expected to beat them.

On the match, though, I started watching after our initial struggle, so it's safe to say that I missed out on that bad period and watched when we were getting into our stride and game. However, after watching the first goal, it really was poor defending. Valencia, again, was getting dragged out. He was nowhere near recovering his position by the time Milner checked inside and Smalling went towards Clichy. Next, Mata failed to track Silva well enough when Silva went through. However, this all started from Valencia being way out of position and not even trying to get close to Milner since then/track Clichy.

However, other than that, we were quite solid, defensively. Smalling and Jones did a good job tracking Man. City's attacking players, particularly Jones, who was great at slowing down Man. City's attacks with the way he handled the 1-on-1 situations. Smalling generally took up very good positions as well at the back and was composed throughout. Blind was also composed throughout the match and handled Navas quite well for someone who's quite slow. He still needs to control his aggression as that does sometimes ope us up on the left side, but today, he handled himself very well, particularly on the ball and going forward. Valencia did have problems with his defensive positioning, but he eventually utilised his pace and strength very well to recover from those situations.

Our midfield was amazing today against Man. City and caused them quite a few problems. Yaya Toure, as usual, couldn't keep up with our tempo and pace. Fernandinho couldn't do it all by himself and looked like he needed a more defensively reliable partner next to him. Putting Silva in a midfield 3 didn't help as Silva didn't do enough to close down Carrick once Milner started to focus more on our right side. Mata and Herrera were great at keeping possession and playing in between Man. City's midfield lines, whilst Fellaini was excellent in dragging Man. City's defenders away and giving Yaya Toure a horrible time. His physicality combined with his apt technical skills really gave Man. City problems, particularly as it allowed us an extra outlet if our other midfielders were being shut down. Young was causing Zabaleta quite a few problems as well, which no one would have thought of before. He still had a few bad deliveries in which he didn't really aim for anyone, but it wasn't as bad as before, and his deliveries into the box on free kicks and in open play caused Man. City lots of problems.

Rooney, again, wasn't at his best. His touches were loose, and he struggled to keep hold of the ball at times when under pressure. However, I wouldn't say that he was poor. I gave him a 6/10 for this performance as he still did a good job dragging away Mangala/Kompany/Demichelis and creating spaces for the likes of Mata, Valencia, and Fellaini to enter. He got a good assist for Mata's goal, and he also played one amazing pass to Valencia during the second half. His performance may not have been great for himself, but it was certainly good for the team if not great.

I'm really liking how we've made Man. City feel beaten once we took the lead. It's been a while since they've felt like that against us, and it really shows how far we've come under van Gaal.

Noooo! I gave Young a 9, Carrick and Fellaini both an 8!! Along with Mata, Smalling and Valencia with a 7! I maybe shouldn't have given Di Maria and Falcao 5's.

The subs do affect the average ratings quite a lot. Perhaps the average can be weighted by % of minutes played? Shouldn't be too hard to write that in, given the time of substitution should already be in the system.

To think some people (mostly oppo fans) still think Moyes was unfairly treated ...

What a great result. The performance was excellent. I think 4-2 scoreline flatters city greatly. Apart from the first 10 minutes we really dominated most of the match. I can't think of a single player who was poor for us, and also, maybe more telling is that I can't think of who was my definite MotM. It was just a wonderful all around display and teamwork. So delighted.

Yeah, thing is in a game like this, the subs aren't going to be very influential so aren't going to get more than 5's and 6's which will bring the score down.

Agree with you on Moyes. I do think Moyes is a very good manager but he was very good at the job he did at Everton and those skills don't necessarily translate onto a bigger stage like Man Utd. Van Gaal has got it right where Moyes got it so wrong and it is a huge relief to be able to live these moments again.

It's been 2 long years, but it finally feels amazing to be a United fan once more.
Great team performance, OT was bouncing, really wish I was there.
On to Stamford bridge

Only downside is this will now prompt an expensive City shake-up and the installation of a big manager.
Not with FFP, unless they somehow manage to mug some stupid Russian team into buying Toure at an inflated price...

Still a lot of work to be done to finish above the blues, but we'll worry about that another day.
For now: a performance to savour.

It feels as though the natural order of the world is somewhat restored......

A downside (and there aren't many) of being in New Zealand.
I've headed off to work, buzzing off the derby result. Of course, no-one I work with follows football, so no real interest from colleagues.
I miss catching up with fellow red work-mates after a game like that...and the way that blues try and avoid all eye-contact. I used to delay mentioning the game for as long as possible, when talking to blues. They would know it was coming, though......
Never thought I'd miss having city fans around; but right now I do miss having a few to torment.

LVG said it was a small injury in his post match interview. Didn't hear anything further on it though.

And when I saw Carrick on the TV screen after he pulled himself off, he was talking with Neil Hough on the touchline. Carrick was apparently not leaving towards the tunnel (at least nothing such was shown on TV), so I hope it is just precautionary.

edit: He did leave towards the tunnel; I found a few pictures of Carrick leaving. Anyway, hope it's nothing serious.

So fecking beautiful watching us dominate City and carve them open today. I almost teared up when we were tearing them apart in the second half. We've endured some truly dark moments from last season's big matches but today we've hit a new high.

I'm looking forward to next season now.

I fully expected us to win, so it came as no surprise today.
But, I have sensed far too much negativity amongst United fans. In the match day threads (against Spurs, LFC, Villa, MCFC) there were lots of negative posts, doom and gloom, "I will accept a draw", etc etc.
I was repeatedly saying that we shouldnt be scared of smaller clubs, especially those in bad form and lower than us in the league.
The doom and gloom defies logic and I shall simply put this down to the lingering "Moyes Effect".
Hopefully, fans will now believe our league position is genuine and be confident when we play sides who are below us in the league and/or going through bad form.
The only game I am weary about is the Chelsea game, mainly due to the Mourinho factor. Other than that, I expect us to draw or win our remaining games.

The other issue is fans wanting us to play big names, rather than in-form players.
Guys if you want us to win games, then we have to play our best starting XI which does not include Falcao or Di Maria (at this moment in time).

So, onto Chelsea now. This will be a highly tactical/strategic game and I wouldnt put it past Mourinho to park the bus against us. Mourinho will do whatever it takes to pick up 1 or 3 points, so we shall get to see if LVG can outwit Mourinho. Maybe this is a dress rehearsal for next season's big fixture, when we shall be competing with Chelsea, for the league title.

We are even beginning to sound like LvG!

From what I remember, he was making his way towards the bench and then stopped and hesitated, almost as if he was told, and went down the tunnel instead. Hopefully its nothing too serious, all the same...

It was a weird game thinking back on it. When it went 2-1 I never felt like City were going to get back in it.

Was worth staying up until 3:00 AM for. Brilliant performance and great to get the win.

You must be in Aussie then?
In NZ the game didn't KO until 3am..... (and was well worth it).
Means my celebratory beer has to wait till I get home from work, though....

Correct. yeah the time zones can be annoying, but after a win like that it's all worth it.

The one thing that has been missing from this VG United, is recovering from going a goal behind. We have not been doing that enough
Most our victories were sweet scoring first, keeping pressure on the ball, lot possession, taken our game to new level especially in last few weeks, but you look at the team few months back you won't find the same confident level there, I would say we just found the right unit, this team can come back from goal or two down and still win it.Hopefully with few positive signing in summer, next season we could see more similar games as yesterday.

Remember those Moyes days when we woke up middle of the night to watch a United side not turning up? Gone were those days!
