Manchester United 1:0 Luton Town

Post-match discussion

I guess Erik would say that we controlled the game. But to be honest Luton had absolutely nothing to offer going forward. Maguire and Lindeløf were our best players today. Another very tame performance attacking wise. Finishing was horrible.

And Højlund + Eriksen injured. A breath of fresh air that it happened before and not during an international break. :)

Yes, that's what "controlling the game" means. You can control a game and fail to be productive with that control.

Honestly thought we played well and were in control of the game, just our finishing let us down which is concerning.

Although according to this place we just scraped a win and were awful.

Sigh

It was another really poor performance just made to look better by opposition being so poor.

As bad as we’ve been this season we’re not in a terrible position but with some tougher fixtures approaching I’d expect us to drop back down the table again unless we miraculously improve.

I wonder if other teams balloon as many shots over the top as we do. Garnacho, Rashford and Bruno do it quite a lot. Are they not told to hit the target in training? At least that would give it a chance of going in or someone could follow up, like Hojlund v Copenhagen.

I think he’s better than good and we’re holding him back more than he is to us.

Ive not seen him struggle with physical side of things… well over 6 foot and almost 13 stone. He could maybe add a bit but might lose a yard of pace

Yeah, you're right about bulking up potentially ruining his pace. That's happened before.

He just seems to fall over a fair bit; but maybe it is just being unaccustomed to the rough and tumble of the Prem rather than actually being weak. Plus, refs tend to let our opponents get away with a lot. Luton should have had a player sent off today.

Main highlight for me was the 2nd half was the 1st time I've worn a bobble hat this season.

This is not good. If you thought this was good then it just shows how far standards have fallen. Everything is so laboured, but it was marginally better than the dross that’s been served up recently which is probably why you thought it was good.

Good performance today honestly - defensively good, no clear weaknesses in the game plan, and made some clear cut chances. Poor finishing which is a big concern.

this is the same team that got a draw to Liverpool last week and should have won if the game had reasonable extra time.

We'd look a lot better if we could finish, Højlund, Garnacho and Rashford squandering great chances.
If we win all the games from now on, we likely have ourselvets the second Treble. :wenger:

Just pulling your legs.

We created more chances this game, and should have won with a comfortable scoreline. However, our football doesn't look great. While we definitely contained Luton for most part, we did not comfortably shut their down their out ball. 10 shot attempt, 4 on target (even if they're tame). In this age, one moment/one tame shot hitting the arm can lead to penalty call.

Every game I watch I just think midfield needs rebuilt. Watched countless spaces open up or oppertunities for a pass today and no one was moving in to the space.

Bruno and Eriksen aren’t good enough to play a slow game and open people up with their passing and the forward line isn’t good enough to give them options. Yet this is what it seems like they try to do.

I think it’s the 27th minute when Maguire breaks ranks and goes for a wonder down the left. If you watch the 2 minutes before that there are at least 6 passes that if someone moved in to the space we would have opened them up. Harry must of got fed up with them and thought feck it.

There just isn’t the intensity in midfield. Worse technical players would spot these and have the energy or power to make something happen but these two just slowly jog about or stand and watch. It’s annoying as hell and it’s every game. I’d much rather have Fred than these two currently.

Why we sold him feck knows. Stupid. Especially when you don’t improve the midfield or add energy in elsewhere.

That was work. Another tiny morsel of self belief.

It’s tough watching a game where the opponents are comfortable with 20% possession. We were patient but we needed to up the tempo and move the ball with 1-touch passes instead of slow pass, tap, control, tap, tap, slow pass to the next player.

Anyway, the negatives were plain for all to see.

Positives were back 4 didn’t give them a sniff. Maguire’s long passing was accurate. Him and Lindelof had a comfortable afternoon.
Reguilón is much better than Dalot. Actually can go outside and put in a cross.
Mount had a good 45 minutes. More dynamism in his play than Bruno and Eriksen combined.
McTominay played well, unlucky not to score.

We were methodical against an unadventurous double low block, against 11 men afraid to leave their own half. It wasn’t champagne football but we won. Bring on the international break.

Watching the match back, we had 3 - 4 clear chances, had we buried 2 of those 4 and won 3-0 i think the “it was really dire” brigade would be much smaller.
ok it wasnt scintillating but we controlled the game from start to finish against a very well organised side. I only remember Onana making 1 good save other than that he had nothing much to do.
At the moment 3pts comes before dashing football. Im seeing some signs of improvement and if the forwards starting finding the net, the scraped 1-0,s will become 3-0 wins.

No easy matches in the premier league especially for this United with a 2nd choice back four and aren't clinical with the chances they create.
Not knocking it… I’d like a great performance but a wins the biggest thing at the moment.

Just a tongue in cheek comment (odd how many one goals wins we’ve had).

While we’re playing pretty averagely, I think if we get a decent start (like Copenhagen), we look better. Just need to be more dynamic early on in games and more ruthless with chances… that should breed confidence and maybe we can slowly improve things.

(and yes, the lack of our back four is an issue… though you wouldn’t know it from listening to the media).

You can only beat the team that's infront of you. We dominated the game in basically every way, could've easily scored 3 or 4 and had a 2.2 xg vs their 0.45xg. What's not to like? Aside from the injuries.

Hojlund is good but very, very raw right now to be leading the line in the Prem.

In a perfect world you would probably farm him out to get used to the hurly burly of English football.

People need to be a bit patient because this season he might only get a handful of goals in the Prem, but he's got something worth persevering with. A bit of bulking up in the gym will do wonders.

I think we want to get him to do the opposite: work on his flexibility and touch. He’s big enough. We don’t need another Lukaku situation.

Normally an international break coming is a cause for mass moaning. But if we're only scraping past the Sheff U's and Lutons, it might not be a bad thing.

Unfortunately none of Shaw, Martinez and Casemiro will be back next game.

If I were a decent opponent playing us, I'd use that fixture to work on goal difference.
A win should be straightforward.
A draw against us would be seen as a bad result for the opponent.
We are there for the taking.

I just don't understand how we can have regressed over 1 summer, so quickly. It makes no sense.

Don’t bring your rational thoughts here man. We were awful and should be relegated

As we tar and feather our players, let’s not forget that with fill-in fullbacks and misfiring “wings” the system is never going to click. Reguilón was a breath of fresh air, as he can actually get to the bye line and cross. Rashford and Garnacho are both out of ideas and out of form, and Antony not contributing a goal or an assist in a year (or however long) sums him up. One by one they aren’t bad but as a collective they just aren’t anywhere near good enough for United.

Hojlund is fine, he's top scorer in the Champions League. He's handled the Prem fine, we just do not get the ball into him enough.

Created chances. Somebody needs to put them away.
Lindeloff. What a servant to the club.
Antony needs to feck off.
Maybe Mount getting some time will not be bad. Erkisen was invisible.
He created the best chance we had in the second half

This very much falls in the category of "a win is a win is a win". There were positives and some things looked better...but my G-d is the finishing just so poor. Something needs to change tactically that allows for the wingers to get more 1v1 opportunities. The movement out of the back and the midfield needs to be faster and less side to side. I'd be fine if Rashford or Garnacho looked to immediately beat the man in front of them to take it down the line...instead of immediately looking to go backwards. There was some of it in the 2nd half that was created by nice runs made from Regulion. Antony, surprisingly, looked to do this. He was quick to move forward and made some great passes that should've been 2 goals. He played quickly and did the simple thing with his head up instead of looking to do the tricky thing.

What really should've been a 4 or 5-0 win was just made harder because we struggle to finish. Chance after chance is there. It feels, to me, that once these start getting converted, we'll go on a good run of form.
