EL D Europa League Round of 16 2nd Leg

Manchester United 1:1 Liverpool

Post-match discussion

Thu, 17 March 2016

Was in the stadium tonight. And for the first 44 mins there was am optimistic atmosphere and we believed.

But in reality Liverpool had many more clear cut chances and De Gea made several amazing saves... again. Carrick, Mata, Lingard and Varela were rubbish and our only inventive influence was Martial. Liverpool thoroughly deserved the win.

Was a tough night as a fan to have no witty or meaningful comeback to Liverpool's fans who rightfully took the mick out of us on our own turf.

We all need to dig in as the journey back to the top will take time and be difficult. We need to accept that we are where we are, cut out the weekly moaning and ride this out.

Numb. Not apathy. Numb.
I think it's a mixture of both.

if we were facing liverpool in a european tie for the first time in history under fergie and got knocked out, this site would've surely crashed with this thread becoming filled with outrage.

instead most of us saw this coming from a mile away and we limped out of the tie without even showing a fight for more than 10 minutes. I'm just jaded with this season since van gaal is in still charge and will be until the end of the season. (hopefully at latest!)

I'm lost for words.

I don't even know what the team are trying to do on the pitch, it's not like we're trying something and not quite achieving it, we just look... dunno, just awful.

The Scousers, FFS!

He was like a headless chicken. 9 out of 10 times he burst down the line he forgot to take the ball with him.
There was one moment that was amongst the oddest things I've ever seen a footballer do. Just past the half way line, bursting forward with the ball, clear space ahead. A Liverpool player started closing in from his left and when about 6 yards away, he just turns and presses the player, leaving the ball rolling forward. The ball he was dribbling. Into open space.

Actually played pretty well first 45mins - we were open ourselves but created several decent openings and deserved to be ahead

but the timing of their goal was horrific and just killed us dead - second half very disappointing, even though the tie was over we should have still been going to win the game
Exactly, it was as if we had given up and turned up for the 2nd half just to play out the game. Even the substitutions suggested so. I think LVG had only one gameplan which was to win 2-0, and whatever he said about scoring 4 before against Midgytland, he just had no other plan for Liverpool.

Liverpool were chasing the goal....De Dea saved it from being an embarrassment

It's an utter disgrace this...My father lived through the original Busby Babes, through Munich, through 68, through 74, through Big Ron.....To see him turn away in disgust was hard for me tonight

That 2nd half was a disgrace

So we'll just pretend the chances Mata and Rojo had before their goal didn't happen? A strange bit of logic, but okay.
What about remembering the first chance which another kid had? Your selective memory and awful arguments trying to defend vangle is boring now.

I know cursing is frowned upon here but, I am fecking disgusted.

They should have destroyed us! De Gea is just ridiculous.

I'm very upset..I can't put it into words

Had to keep a clean sheet. Didn't. Game over.

LVG is just an imbecile for continuing to play Fellaini. And our lack of squad depth meant no strikers on bench, and one attacking player not brought on, in a game we needed goals. It's almost comedic.

Didn't watch the game timezone difference. But I am honestly shocked that he played the Wig again...

Didn't watch. Oh... I thought we played pretty well in the first half? But was limp in second. Didn't know David had to be superman again... he's gone for sure after this crap show of a season.

Oh come on...

It looked like Liverpool were the ones chasing the goals, not us.

Don't know if you're on a WUM or not but, now is not the time

We've just been knocked out of Europe by fecking Liverpool and look at this thread. Barely 3 pages.

People can hardly get angry anymore, it's just total apathy now.

Well said mate. I honestly feel that the majority of people who are just at the "I'm numb and please get this over with stage". The crazy thing is that LVG is still here, week in and out spewing just inane utterances. Come to think of it, what else can he say except non-sensical meaningless distortion of English sentences. People just have LVG fatigue. If this whole season was erased from my memory that will be just fine.

Being a WUM means I am trying to distort reality. Let me assure you I am not. I didn't watch and am trying to find out how we played. I guess it's contrary to what I heard back from some of my mates who did watch. Chill out.

Losing to the scousers in a 2 legged tie is quite possibly the lowest I've felt as a United fan. Even losing the league the last minute to City in 2012 didn't hit me as hard. The sheer ineptitude of this and watching hat German hipster punching the air at Old Trafford is possibly a stuff of nightmares.

I don't know, I've lost the 5% or so remaining faith I had in LvG and I genuinely think one of us could have picked a better team and gotten a better result.

Can't speak for you but at least we were competing then. I can live with losses if we are trying and you see the club working to get better.

Right now I do not know what we are doing... treading water poorly and sinking maybe?

For the first time in my life I just couldn't be arsed to watch. Went to bed early and am glad I did. And when the fans are not even bothered to watch what does that say about the club?

We showed some Spirit in the first half. Cannot complain about that. Coutinho`s Goal came as a shock and finished the game.

The Problem is we lack Quality all over the place. Liverpool deserved to go through without a doubt. You can already see Klopp`s signature and I am afraid when he gets 2 or 3 Players in the summer to complete the puzzle they will significantly be better than us next season.

Fellaini was again one of our better Players. And that fact alone Shows our Problem.

Smalling was again our only Defender yesterday who looked like an actual Defender.
The same can be said on the other side of the pitch about Martial. Mata and Lingard were quite useless. Rashford really is too Young and we should not expect him to be our savior.

And we are missing Rooney.

Beside a new Manager we Need at least one CB, maybe a RB if we do not trust Darmian (Varela is not good enough), 1 or 2 midfielders and Minimum one worldclass attacking Player/winger.
Better 2.

Cowardice in first leg cost us.

They were there for the taking tonight and shitting themselves.

A merely competent manager would've had that for us over two legs.
Agree.

There was simply no reason for us to decide our game plan for the first leg was to be "being observant". We gave what is an alright Liverpool team far too much respect and it cost us the tie.

It's a very long way back from here. Very very upset by what's been allowed to happen over the last three years.

I thought the first half was excellent , we played well created chances, we had Liverpool on the rope , there for the taking, until we got sucker punched at the end of the half.
We came out for the second half looking OK but has the half went on we looked like we could not be bothered, it was painful to watch, for the first time in a very long time I turned it off for the last 10 mins I just could not watch any more.

Honestly, it's a silly competition that shouldn't exist, in my view, but given it offers a Champions League place for the winner, it has some meaning.

Can't say I really thought either was near likely to claim that but it was a hope we had and a hope that remains for them.
Why ? There has always been 2 European Competitions.
The old Cup Winners Cup was excellent, they should bring that back and forget this league bullshit.

Come on, at least De Gea & Martial are class.

Plus we do have a few others who will go on to be great and/or would in other top teams, WHERE THEY WOULD BE USED RIGHT.

Players such as Shaw, Herrera etc

I meant that Martial won't leave or won't be allowed to leave after one year and such a huge investment. I don't rate Herrera that highly, a really weirdly overrated player on the caf. I rate Shaw very highly but I need to see a lot more (unlucky he got injured like that) before putting him in that category.
So the only class player who is susceptible to leave is our goalkeeper.

Liverpool also created many chances in the first half (Henderson's horrible shot over the bar, Sturridge hitting the woodwork aswell as some impressive saves from DDG).
We didn't get sucker punched at all, the way Liverpool were attacking and most importantly, the way we were defending, a goal conceded was always going to be conceded.

Was a good performance in the context of van gaals reign

I feel like crying
At times, I felt it was good too but this bit is important:

Even in the first half which saw us nearly go two goals up, Liverpool, although they played pretty poorly, when they did attack, sliced us open pretty comfortably, and some of their chances were piss easy. Henderson' chance was harder to miss than score.

Overall, the result of the tie was pretty deserved and Liverpool are now better than us. That's the sad part given they're not actually that good, it's just that they are trying to make the most of what they have whereas we're making the least.

The depressing thing is that Klopp has the excuse of not even choosing the players he's brought to the club.

It's all about coaching and management. Liverpool, as they were under Rodgers for a period, are now beginning to be well managed and well-coached, even if they have to improve plenty in the players they have. We are quite clearly poorly coached/managed. We make very ordinary use of the resources we have.

Sigh, how I long for the time when we have a managing coaching us properly. Even if our players are lacking, that's alright, but at least we should be a well coached team that plays like a proper unit.

That second half was so......sad. Just a complete lack if anything. Quality, passion, tactics, will to win. Nothing.

Lvg has given up, the players have given up, the fans have given up. Somebody put us out of our misery and make a decision now. Put us on a new path now. The alternative is a car crash of apathy.

Liverpool are getting all gushy but even in the first game I didn't think they were all that, they were just better than us which isn't the badge of honour it should be anymore. Quality wise they're every bit as average as we are

I genuinely wouldn't take any of their players
(I would their manager tho)

Too true. I don't know if I'm going insane but the way we take FKs does my head in. You'll see two players over the ball with one of them doing the same dummy 99% of the time before the second one takes it. Yesterday Carrick made the dummy run, a guy who could be more useful inside the box or a few meters out of it. Are our players stupid or has the coaching made them stupid ?

I'd take Coutinho.
