Post-match discussion

You'd hope it doesn't take more than 1 competitive game for Amorim to realise he cant be letting Marcus Rashford, the king of sulky walking pace footballers, lead his press.

There was not much point analysing United's system and play style after this game as there's only been 2 training sessions and the players playing today won't be the players playing in around 6 months time, as in the likes of Evans, Eriksen etc

Thanks

10 games coming in a month - hope he has enough time for the actual coaching stuff rather than just managing recovery

Clear the players need more time to understand the system, but that was expected. It'd clear what we are trying to do at least - get lots of the ball and be positive with it. It seemed we had a lot of touches in the oppo box, we were quick in transition (even having Onana throw the ball out to start a counter).

Midfield though needs legs, and the wingbacks were good going forward but we conceded loads of space and possession in wide areas. Against a good side this would've been suicide.

I don't see a place for Zirkzee here in this system though, he doesn't have the ability at all at 9 or 10.

Avoided chucking his team under the bus, which tbh he can't do. This is his squad for the rest of the season. We'll see what he really thinks of them by who he plays and who he sells.

They don’t deserve chucking under the bus, it’s two training sessions and one game.

Not terrible, he's had a good look at some average players today, and will have seen first hand what we all already know.

Hopefully he'll get Martinez, Yoro, and Mainoo back in soon, and keep Shaw fit.

Up front we look hopeless though, and there is no one to come back in there, so he needs some help in January.

I think some fans here are being really unreasonable.
The game wasn't great, but it was an away game on the back of an international break, with new players that he's barely trained with. It was an assessment.

The game gave us an opportunity to see some ideas, who can fit the system and who can't. We got a draw out of it, which is fine.

I think we'll be hard to beat; I also think we'll have multiple routes of attack.

Hojlund will be good in this system, Rashford won't be. Him running into channels already looked good.
Bruno has to do more in the 10 position.
Garnacho is not good enough on the turn at this point to be one of the 10's.
Bruno can help in the CM role if required.
Shaw would thrive in this system.
Amad played well, but he shouldn't be in the wing back role.
Evan's and Eriksen don't have the energy to support the team in this system, it requires a lot of energy from the midfielders and centre backs to cover and close down spaces, and they simply are a step too slow, particularly in away games.
Ugarte, Mazraoui and De Ligt have the intensity to thrive.
Dalot as a left wing back won't cut it.
Onana has been top class since the start of the season.

I think in a home game, where eriksen and evans don't start, we will win well. As a team, I think in our away games, we will be more difficult to beat than simply dominant.

In the 10 positions, we need to ensure we have players who can play on the turn. If that means that Mount starts with Amad, and the Bruno plays as a no.8, then so be it.

For the rest of the team, having a completely athletic team should be the recruitment model. More than technical ability, having the right athleticism can make us such a difficult team to play against.

By the end of this year we will see a few of last years youth team playing for us. Kids who can listen and have energy. The days of Eriksen, Evans, Rashford etc will be over fairly soon.

So it means something is as expected? I thought it meant something was a let down, I'd be more let down if a squid wasn't damp. Or maybe we're expecting squids to be extra moist and slimy? Maybe I've not stroked enough squids. All that said, I don't know what a squib is, nor how wet they're supposed to be. I think I might be losing sight of the conversation here, but I do like squids.

It was the first match in a completely new system under a new coach with only 2 training sessions. It will take time for the players to adapt but we didn't lose today so already it's a much better start than under Ten Hag.

I'm quite positive about it all tbh, despite the frustration of today. Martinez and Yoro to come into the back three, Mainoo and Ugurte as cm and Shaw and Dalot as wing backs (providing Shaw stays fit) will give us a really solid base and expect the attacking players to be brought in next summer targeted to fit this system.

Bruno is going to struggle to reach high goals / assists in this system, but definitely will have a big part to play in it all.

Lost every 50-50
Could hardly beat the press
Ipswich easily beat our press
Rashfords body language is so annoying.
Mazraoui is wasted as a LCB.
Dalot's drop in form is alarming.
We should never start Casimero and Eriksen as the 2 CM's.
Garnacho isn't as quick as I thought he was
Amad was very good
Onana was excellent
Some of our play when we did move the ball forward quickly was nice to watch.
Bruno looked far better alongside Ugarte rather than on the right of the front 3
Perfect summary. Total agreement.

Dont recall a single pass through the lines. There were a couple over the top that maintained possession in wider areas but zero threat on the deck through the middle

Agree.

There's a sense of arrogance about us, like once again we couldn't believe how up for it it Ipswich were and that they had the audacity to press us relentlessly. It's like we expected them to roll over for us like in the good old days.

Was with you until you put Dalot as wing back ahead of Mazraoui.

Amad has to be included and I’d love to see him as a 10 behind a striker

Yeah either Maz or Dalot, both can offer something in this system.

Amad will be an important player for us, again I think he will flourish due to his flexibility being able to play several positions in this system.

Really poor to be fair. We’re such a physically weak team. In fact so many of our problems are down to not being able to do the basics. Passing and moving, winning second balls, holding the ball up.

It doesn’t matter what formation you play. If you can’t do those things well you’ll struggle in a lot of your games.

Did like the substitutions to be fair. Did everything he could to try and get a winner.

I have been a staunch defender of Rashford but goal aside he may as well have been subbed off after 5 minutes

Cannot really take much from today's game, we looked off the pace, Amorim has lots to do

There's a long way to go from the way we played today but it's difficult for a new coach to come in mid-season and make drastic change in the space of a week without some teething problems.

Ipswich deserve some credit, they played a lot better than what you might expect from a team in their position of the table. Our forward players really need to step up in the final third though, a bit more quality from them and we might've been able to get more from that match.

I can't believe how negative it is here. Our lack of goal scoring was never going to be solved in 1 game.

There was some lovely play but ultimately it's good he sees how crap we are in front of goal and that this something we urgently need to address imho.

Only Amad and Onana were above average. Most players were either average or below average. And being average, let alone below average, in the first game for a new manager is absolutely disastrous.

It is very telling that we did major change of the playing system and it was so clear system is not the problem - individual shitty performances are.

Too many of these players are simply not good enough

Despite the goal Rashford was garbage most of the game, and Bruno desperately needs benching. Zirkzee is new, but we should see at least a glimpse of something, he is becoming the new Antony - a train wreck.

Unfortunately, one player that seems to completely not fit the system is Garnacho. I don't think he can be anything special in Amorim's system. He is a player of great potential but it doesn't look like he will make it in 3-4-3, we should sell him ASAP if we can make some good money for him and if we are sticking with Amorim and 3-4-4 (can't see how we wouldn't)

It's almost as if something might have changed since then.

So, firstly it’s almost impossible to glean anything of definitive value from a first outing like that. But….

1. The difference between first half and second half was huge. You could see his half time talk and adjustments had a really positive impact. That’s great to see.

2. Team needs the ability to pass out from the back and a more aggressive press from the back. The introduction of Shaw made a massive difference.

3. I thought Bruno and Amad were outstanding today. For Amad to play as well as he did, despite being a wingback, was just remarkable.

4. None of our forwards are really “it”. Fair to give Amorim time to work with them and see what happens. But I fully expect to see Mount make the team when fully fit, because the other options are quite poor.

5. Amad in an attacking position is a must. He’s our most dangerous player. But who plays RWB?

6. Lots of things for Amorim to work on, but I’m excited to see the results. We had something like 75% possession in the second half and the emergence of some patterns that were hugely encouraging, after just two training sessions.

7. I love what Amorim said after the game about not waiting to implement his system. He wants to take a risk and go with it from day one, and it’s that kind of powerful identity which will be so important to our future success.

There will be loads of line up changes I expect but I would love to see something like:

Onana

Yoro — De Ligt — Martinez

Antony — Mainoo — Ugarte — Mazroui

Amad — — Bruno

Garnacho
Or, Amad out wide right, and Mount in the middle. I think pace up front is important, and maybe that is any one of Garnacho, Rashford or Hojlund. If Amad moves in field, then what left footed, hard working, attack minded wide player do we have who could play that role? Really only Antony. His one big quality is that he works hard, and so is good on the press and is obviously attack minded.

Still giggling to myself thinking about zirkzee's attempt at a shot. Kicked the ball like my 3 year old daughter does.
