LC L League Cup Semi-final 2nd Leg

Hull City 2:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 26 January 2017

Also it has to be said the last 3 times we've got to the final of the League Cup it was a huge struggle to get through the semi finals.

In 2006 we scraped past Blackburn 3-2 on agg
In 2009 we scraped past Derby County 4-3 on agg after losing the first leg
in 2010 we needed a last minute winner to get past City and win 4-3 on agg. We lost the first leg there too.

So tonight was nothing new. We always make things difficult for ourselves in these League Cup semi finals

Maybe Pogba alright. He needs a rest, but it looked like (especially in the first half) that we didnt bother turning up. It wasnt that we were tired, just didnt care.
Maybe not didn't care, but being told by other people that the game was over. Complacency and not caring are different things.

The last semi we were in against Sunderland should have been a warning. We actually managed to blow that one.

I'm sure they'll have been given an earful after that shambles. No particular need to say it in public.

I doubt it!
Jose picked a shambolic XI to start with and he had time to fix it after the horrendous first half. Jose was happy to give the minimum effort required to get us to Wembley.

Rojo is useless as a FB.
Darmian is hopeless on the right.
Lingard chosen ahead of Mkhi?

If you look close enough - you will see Jose just wanted any result that will get us to Wembley. The result tonight won't matter to him.

My gripe is simple. If getting any result(including a loss like tonight) was good enough for him, why not give "forgotten" players like Bastian, Martial, Young, etc some game time?

We played bad, really bad. Thats that. Hull had all the momentum, we looked complacent. Pogba and ibra were terrible, no one else really sparked confidence. Smalling is mentally incapable and rashford showed his immaturity.

The above is a fact but what is also a fact is we had a bad day in the office but we are in the final! A second final in 8 months and we are going in the right direction. Dont get why jose is being blamed, yes no martial is questionable but the players that started should of won. I think after 40 mins inread a stat saying hill had 60% posession and 6 shots to our 1! Says it all, the players let themselves down but at the end of the day,tje job was done.

We now move on to fa cup, hopefully a strong win and we see ibra having a rest. He looks very very tired atm.

Exactly.

I understand people being frustrated with tonight because in general we were total shite. It's not something to get too worked up over though, in cup games especially it's just about getting through to the next round.

And we did that.

I think today was our 3rd away loss in a row in the semi final of the League Cup too.

City 2-1 Utd
Sunderland 2-1 Utd
Hull 2-1 Utd

Positives:
We're in the final!!
We don't have to sit through an extra 30 minutes.
Rashford put in another promising performance on the wing.

He did absolutely nothing, this goes for lingard as well and you aren't alone in this, just because a player runs a lot doesn't make their performance good.
I can not think of a single time he created anything, or got past his man and stayed on his feet.

I love rashford but he is useless on the wings unless brought on against a tired full back

Bet Liverpool wished they'd lost and got through to a cup final.

We really need to start dropping Ibra towards the end of the game and add some pace. Its frustrating to see all counters get stopped towards the end and we aimlessly kicking the ball ahead. Very poor performance, jusr glad we are through

Could Jose look any less arsed about an interview?

DDG and Rashford aside, none of our players covered themselves in glory tonight.

The selection and sub decisions were iffy from the start. Why play Pogba and Ibra for 90 minutes? What was Rojo doing at LB when we had Shaw on the bench?

I hope he tears a lot of our players a new one. Darmian should never start a game again. Rooney should keep his appearances limited.

That said, we're in the final. Hope our players turn up for the PL home game.

Sorry but I have to question Jose's selection tonight.

Why is Zlatan playing once again. He offered nothing tonight. Jose moans he can't give Martial a chance. Well play Rashford or Martial up top and give them a chance to prove themselves in their correct position.

Darmian was really poor again. Shaw needs minutes, play him! Likewise using Rojo at LB, shifting Jones over to accommodate Smalling, who has been terrible since he returned from injury.

I know we are through to the final and Jon Moss once again played the 12th man for the opposition (who now must have an agenda against us) but we are slowly looking off the boil. No pace, no urgency, no pass appreciation. It's needs sorting.

His choices are outright ridiculous. Zlatan does not have to play every single minute of every single game. Rashford is and never will be a winger. Darmian is likley the worst player we have and should not be starting games unless it can be helped. And him completley blocking out Martial, Shaw and TFM is not helping us in anyway and could really cause problems in the longterm.

He is building something but I am really not sure I like what it is.

Terrible performance from a bunch of arrogant well overpaid players. Very lucky to go through tonight against a very poor hull team

To think we can compete at the top level with some of these players is crazy.
These stuck out for me tonight

Darmian is a disaster surely Jose must see this, like a Sunday pub team player
Rojo has never played well as a left full back, so obvious yet again
Smalling adds a real panic and nervousness to the back line

Pogba- swanned around total arrogance tonight. His worst game this season. However he will be a star in time.
Herrera- poor again, no composure, gave away so much possession- not consistent.

Lingard- largely anonymous, zero creativity how does he get these starts.?

Sh!t stuff but could be a good result in the long term. If the players, and possible Mourinho himself, needed a kick in the arse this was the perfect game for it to have happened in.

Not a great performance. Rojo, like Smalling is not a full back. And Smalling's limitations as a CB were fairly obvious tonight. I'm delighted, however, that we play Southampton at Wembley. Humping them in the final might put to rest a defeat that still bugs me over forty years later.

Now this was more like the last three years. Well done team, you haven't changed much. Still have it.

I would respectfully disagree. He was our best player tonight. One of the few in the first half that looked hungry.

Haven't seen the match yet, but I see some differing opinions on Rashford playing on the wing. So which was it? Was he good or was he shite?

You gotta let go man. (joking) :)

Pleased to reach the final even though there is a tinge of embarrassment by how appalling we played.

we really need new Carrick. Rojo is not good as LB, Smalling suck, Darmian cant attack. at least Pogba scored a goal, hopefully he will be better.

Brilliant post.

Shocking display. Our midfield still requires major surgery. Smalling, Darmian and Lingard are really terrible.
Surely Rooney is a better option than Lingard?
Know I'll get stick for this but not convinced that Zlatan up top isn't a hindrance in many ways either.
