LC L League Cup Semi-final 2nd Leg

Hull City 2:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

The less said about the performance the better. However, that's 4 Wembley appearances in 9 months, that's a nice habit to have

Carrick needs replacing(that's obvious) and I'd replace Herrera too, though I know that's an unpopular opinion on the caf where he is lauded as something he clearly isn't.

Carrick replacement aye.

Herrera simply needs rotating, not replacing.

This was the best night to choose to have the worst game in two months. Did not show up at all, don't know why. Maybe our players thought that it will be an easy job and that we just need to pass it away and slow down the play. Maybe that was the plan, as I have not seen any passion in the first half, like we did not want to even try to shoot or create a chance. Until the goal, then we wake up a little bit.

But at the end, it is better to lose tonight then against in the league. We are in the final and we should forget this one and move to the Wigan game, or even more important (as I guess we should win easily against Wigan at home) against Hull at home next one. I am afraid as it looks like we can't easily win against Hull. Third game, we won one with the last minute goal, second not that easy, lost third, so we should be serious in that one as there is a chance to finally move from that 6th place.

I am not happy that we did not rest Zlatan for this one, and Pogba. Thought that Mourinho will rest at least one of them. Hopefully we won't see any of them against Wigan, as I really would like to see Shaw, Martial, Fosu, even Tuanzebe for some minutes in that one.

Technically our unbeaten run is over and it's no wins in 3. Still feels good man.

Looked like active regeneration. Honestly don't know why players like Fosu-Mensah or Martial can't be trusted to lose a game by 2:1. When else are you going to play them? Players who are out of favour, or playing for a new contract, or those who need to impress other clubs like Young would put in more of an effort than what our starters did tonight. I can understand Jose, who wanted to secure the final, but mixing it up a little wouldn't hurt.

Anyway, rather lose this one than next week against them, so who cares.

What an awful awful game.

Jose has to take some blame.

Starting Rojo at LB despite everyone and their dog being able to tell you how bad he is there. Then bringing on Rooney who done feck all. Both were at fault for their 2nd goal.

Rashford should never start on the wings in a big game again. He is just so poor in those positions unless he’s playing as an impact player.

Smalling will be gone in the summer. His positioning is just abysmal and its clear he only looked good last season due to LVG's negative tactics.

Herrera once again had another bad game. Future captain? lol. He has to be replaced in the starting XI in the summer.

Streak over but I guess we should be happy that we’ve reached the final.

Seriously?

If that's your definition of major surgery then yes.

But Pogba and Herrera remain as starters for me.

I wouldn't start Herrera, we'll win feck all with him as a first choice midfielder.
Squad player yes as he is far from shit but he is not a top midfielder imo, not looking for an argument just my honest opinon.

Seriously?
He's poor man. Or he just needs a serious rest.

He's one of a number of players who are lucky that they don't have much competition and that they have a manager who hates rotation.

If Herrera wasn't so passionate people would see his bad side. Would love for Andreas to come back in and take Herreras position.

I think Herrera is at his worst when he's not composed - that's when he's ragged, takes wild shots and generally looks flustered. He cares a lot, so sometimes he overcompensates.

But he's one of the more receptive players to Mourinho's instructions - he's well drilled and when he's given a task, he almost always carries it out to the fullest. That's important.

Personally, I think he's brilliant. Whether he can step it up on the European stage remains to be seen.

The flattest game of football I've seen in ages. I mean, did we even see any football? Jesus, we were bad. We weren't even awful in fact, we were just nothing.

I really think that we need to up the quality, and those players will up the performances of others. I know we didn't have all first choice out tonight but that point still stands. I don't buy into the squad being good enough like others believe. I'm not knee jerking either, because I know we've been better and a few bad performances were still bound to happen, but I've thought the same all along.

At least we're in the final, even if it's debatable whether we deserved to be. I'll take that for this season.

Also it has to be said the last 3 times we've got to the final of the League Cup it was a huge struggle to get through the semi finals.

In 2006 we scraped past Blackburn 3-2 on agg
In 2009 we scraped past Derby County 4-3 on agg after losing the first leg
in 2010 we needed a last minute winner to get past City and win 4-3 on agg. We lost the first leg there too.

So tonight was nothing new. We always make things difficult for ourselves in these League Cup semi finals

I don't disagree with the general point that we've huffed and puffed through a few semi finals and getting the job done is what counts. However as you say we lost two of those first legs (and drew the other against Blackburn 1-1) and turned it round in the second legs to win the ties.

What I found hugely dispiriting tonight was the lack of effort and composure we showed defending a handsome lead. Sure Hull played well and like a team with nothing to lose, but we looked complacent and unready for the fight. That is inexcusable regardless of the result of the tie and I expect Mourinho to be letting the players know that was far from good enough.

I considered not watching when I saw the line-up and we got exactly what you would expect, totally uninspiring line-up followed by totally uninspiring performance.

I mean:
Darmian + Lingard (entire right hand side was a mess)
Smalling (he defends well often enough, but we just never seem to play as well with him in there)
Rojo at LB (he's not a LB)

Too many players not comfortable enough and not good enough on the ball to really dominate a game.

Hull's second string and we managed one shot on target in the first 35 minutes. It was wretched. God knows why we were so languid tonight. Doesn't inspire confidence.

I said 10 minutes in that we struggle to score goals when we really want to, so I bet this is going to be a boring match because of the aggregate score. Shouldn't mean we're so lethargic.

 I can't tell if he's taking the piss or having a dig at the referee or being serious

Why do we constantly start Ibra? Surely give him a rest and let rashford or martial play central? Think rashford is wasted on the left wing.

I'd like to see this occasionally too. Agree Rashford doesn't suit the left wing, and Martial doesn't seem to most of the time either.

Lingard, Smalling, Darmian, Rojo at LB, Jones at LCB are all average . We can't make the mistake of playing nearly every player in defence out of position again or it will bite us in the arse.

Think about it. Mkhitaryan, Valencia, Bailly, Shaw and Martial will come in at some point. A transfer window in the summer and we can move more of the dross off our books and get the same quality of players we got in the summer.

Also Bailly back means that he will play at RB now. Darmian is atrocious there. Has to be LB from now on.

Even barca would struggle if they had the players I first mentioned playing for them.

I'm sure either Arse or Chelsea would've had that 2-0 by HT and rest Ibra/Carrick (equivalents). We aren't ruthless.

We were bound to have a shyte game. At some point I expected us to lose, but better to lose a game of no value than lose an important game.

I think the players thought it was going to be an easy game and never showed up for it. The only reason I am pissed off is because our unbeaten run came to an end.

Some harsh words today IMO. This was always going to be a difficult match in the context of the match. I think people underestimate how difficult it is for the players to mentally gear up for each and every match during the course of a season when you're playing 2 matches a week almost none stop. I also think that the fans over estimate the quality of the squad and don't realize what a great job Mourinho is doing papering over the cracks. The squad stills needs strengthening in defense and midfield in particular.

Darmian, Smalling should both go. Not sure Jones or Rojo will be here next season either. This team is still very much a work in progress, we still need a CB, DM + a goalscoring winger/striker.

I would respectfully disagree. He was our best player tonight. One of the few in the first half that looked hungry.
But he didn't create anything, there isn't anything to disagree with, nothing not one chance.

He didn't get a shot off or cross, he beat his man then lost the ball 99% of the time.

It's not his fault he isn't a winger but he didn't play well, the rest were rest were terrible rashford was just slightly not as bad

Yes, we've slowed down. But our midfield doesn't need major surgery, it just doesn't.
It does, carrick pogba herrera, anyone of those has a bad run of form who do you replace them with?
Carrick in an ideal world would play every other game.
Herrera has been quietly dropping his standard for a few games now.
Pogba I love but he is confidence player who can go missing if it's not working out for him.
We need options

Jose got his tactics and team selection horribly wrong, like he thought they were playing a Big Northern hoof-ball team. I'm gonna take liberties and suggest his selection of Jones-Smalling-Rojo was him being too scared to fully do what he wants to try - And that is a 3 at the back, (esp. when Bailly comes back - to give us more options as the games pile up)
Having those 3 selected in this games's back 4 setup, was a complete fudge. Either play a proper left-sided full back, or go for it and have the back 3 with 2 proper wing-backs. This was just an absolute tactical mess.

He needed or seemed to want breaking wing play but he had as his full-backs Darmian and Rojo for better defensive solidity; big mistake vs how Hull played.
Terrible choices; might aswell have played Fosu-Mensah and Shaw as full backs as it would have provided a better outlet and pitch progression. Shows just how vital Valencia has been to build our attacks.

Hull played well against Chelsea since the new manager has encouraged them to play more adventurous with quick interplay.

Momentum is being lost. Need a good pick-me up against Wolves. Expect a better performance and Mikhi to come back.
