Post-match discussion

Pleased for Zirkzee to have the stones to step up for the game-winning penalty. He can hold his head up high, whether he goes or stays. Happy for Bayindir as well to put in such a top performance after being written off.

Belief is a powerful drug!

This win will do us world of good
Ten men
Biased ref
Away from home
JZ and Bayindir winning it
Perfect.

There was a time when I felt we always lost penalty shoot-outs, now I feel the opposite

Amazing win!

But red card should not mean one player less for the full game. This needs to change. Punish the player and let him hit the dressing room but bring on a other after a certain time, like hockey for instance.

So boring when every game is the same when one player is sent off.

Anyway, this must mean the world to the confidence of the players!

Glory Glory!

Red cards have been a part of the game since 1970, let them stay.

Good too see the lads run their bollocks off and work for each other

Very good signs

Feels like big big performance and change over past two weeks. Player showing mentality, fight and understanding of roles in team.

Epic result to beat Arsenal on their ground. Really solid performances all over pitch. Need to carry this on to Thursday. That is big test. Win next two and we could be looking up. No pressure and then Amorim can start cooking.

Well played lads.

Fair play to your grit and determination. Back Amorim with a new squad and you'd do well. Very poor display from us but it's not new this season.

Enjoy the win!

To be fair, by the time Zirkzee was on the game was a lot more open, a lot more space to get on the ball. He did well though, spreads the play well and can link the play and pick decent passes. I just don’t feel confident with him in goal scoring situations. This will do him the world of good though.
That’s doing him a disservice. He really did hold up the ball very well today. He understood his role and 3-4 times he started off our counter attacks - which just weren’t happening with Rasmus.

It’s not to bring down Rasmus, but as fans we can appreciate a player who’s subbed on without having to call out the player who was subbed off.

Such a big win after that fight. I was dreading conceding late or losing pens and it killing that morale for the fight.

Love love love that result

That’s not enough of a penalty. You’ll lose so much in the game with that. The jeopardy of being sent off makes players more circumspect once they are on a yellow. It’s not the refs fault (as bad as he was today) that Dalot dives in for a sure shot yellow when he had one already.

If you change the rules, you’ll see teams just foul players for fun when there is a quality difference- and the cost of a red card would be a short term back to the walls job.

The overall 11v 11 is far better because of this rule - but it assumes that refs are fair. After today’s game, hard to think that there is any way this ref wasn’t crooked.

I think they’re seeing now. If we fight, we can win any match. Regardless of the ref being on the other team side. We always have a chance if you fight for the badge.

I honestly think challenging and pushing the likes of Marcus. And then you see he’s not in to fight so you won’t be a part of the project was a clear signal to everyone else. Fight every match or you’re done here.

About bloody time

Red cards have been a part of the game since 1970, let them stay.
Not in England though. I remember players being booked, not carded, in the early 1970s so it must have been in the mid-70s when the league started using the card system. I can't be bothered looking it up but I'm pretty sure it was a few years after 1970.

The result might mask it but we should never forget this as one of, if not THE biggest refereeing farces that we have seen. Absolutely shambolic.

Why does it sometimes take Arsenal two or three minutes to take their free kicks?

If referees catch on to this and start adding time, some matches will last almost as long as American football

Epic. Almost reminds me of the famous 99 Semi replay at Villa. We take the lead, they pox an equaliser, get a pen to win but our keeper saves us and we have a man sent off.
Games like today remind me how lucky I am to have followed this club for over 50 years.
Credit is due.

Delighted with this. Will surely give huge amounts of confidence for the guys.

Away from home, against 2nd in the league, holding out for about 65 minutes with 10 men along with a terrible ref and they were rewarded with the win.

Showed some real strong mentality and even had a chance or two to knick it!

Perhaps the fruits of Amorim’s labour are starting to emerge and I love it.

Onwards and upwards!

Rasmus also held the ball up and started a good attack when he caught Saliba with his arm. It’s not his best skill but he does occasionally manage to do that sort of thing.

Fantastic performance, I can't remember when we've showed such fight and resilience in the face of such blatant play acting and one of the worst refereeing displays I've seen in many a year.Arsenal have forgot how to play football, the drama before every set piece is embarrassing.

Anyway Feck them and their odious little prick of a manager, Everyone was Fantastic, Dalot aside, especially Bayandir, Maguire and De light.

Very proud tonight.

This was the performance we've been waiting for, a performance of sheer passion, spirit, fight, grit, desire, pride, fervour, everything we saw against Liverpool and more! It wasnt always pretty but we played to a plan, a strategy with all the above plus intelligence. Dalot, so good going forward against Liverpool, was pretty much on the defensive from the off and his recklessness could have been a disaster...but instead the team regrouped and fought even harder....this was the Manchester United we've been witing for! Now we have to kick on, Amorim and the entire squad has to use this as a springboard to push on and up. A respectable finish in the Prem is probably the best we can achieve but the FA Cup could again be the salvation to our season.
Today the pride returned!

Immense defensive performance today, and the squad showed some outstanding spirit. They really held on for a very long time and managed to not lose their nerves or legs till the end. Immense game, big win for the team morale.
The attack was pretty poor for large parts of the game, and understandable almost entirely shot after the send-off.

Bayindir with some world-class saves, but also some weaknesses displayed especially during corners and crosses. The punch almost straight up that lead to the equaliser, and another one shortly after that he punched straight at his own penalty spot (where luckily no Arsenal player was present) were scenes that definitely could see improvement.

I keep being surprised by how atrocious the performance of referees often is, but today really takes the cake for a good while. No control over the match and blatantly one-sided. To think that this guy is a regular EPL referee in his sixth year...

Absolutely

I didn’t have the nerve to watch the shoot out. What a win. Proud of the lads
I was weirdly confident having Byandir in there after his save earlier. His dive was so far and strong, exactly what you need in penalties. Players seemed confident too. Amad looked like he was at practice

It's all been said above, so proud of the team.

Nothing makes me madder than a dive like that. Despicable.

Spelcial shout out to JZ for his play and the 5th pen. Way to go man.

Easily the best post I have read for a very long time. Wish I had posted that.

No criticism for anyone from me after that.

Far from perfect quality wise and we rode pirate luck after the red card, but when the players put that much in with the odds that much against them it really doesn't matter.

Getting the result to go with it is a big bonus but even if we lost, that sort of performance gets every fan behind the team and gets rid of the negativity.

Referee genuinely needs investigating. Don't get how you can watch a game and after 20 minutes you know the ref is red carding one of your players and screwing you over at some point, and meant to just pretend that's normal.

No, Dalot definitely deserves criticism from putting the team in that position. It was such a stupid thing to do considering he'd been booked and it was quite obvious to everyone how much the ref was favoting them.

The rest of the team was superb.

Whilst I agree the Red card was soft - this isn’t ever happening!
The problem with red cards is that not all fouls are equal in the impact they have on the game.

Two mistimed tackles has next to no impact on the result.

A DOGO clearly has a huge impact on the game and deserves a red.

Serious foul play clearly deserves a red.

Part of the problem is that referees are too quick to brandish yellow cards for nothing fouls.

That’s what I’ve been waiting for! Finally a group of players that genuinely wanted the win as much as the fans and gave their all. Under ETH that team rolls over meekly and gets thumped. Amorim has turned them into warriors.

So, so proud of the team tonight. I struggled watching the penalty shoot out as I felt the boys really deserved the win but feared their tired legs and mind wouldn’t manage.

Quite right.
That refereeing performance was atrocious and he should be ashamed of himself. Yes I am a United fan.
But he was booking united players for very basic fouls while at the same time was ignoring Arsenal fouls, play acting and time wasting.

He was just terrible and needs to be disciplined for that.

It highly likes does under ten Hag yeah. Saw it too often to not believe that would be the case.

I remember European battles in the evenings, under floodlights with everyone emptying the tank for a monumental win. An atmosphere you could cut with a knife. The United swagger. Earning the right to be arrogant

We're not quite there yet but you can smell the electricity.

On to the next.

We get Leicester next round. ..... hope RVN doesn't pull off a shock....
Why couldn't we get a non PL team? Anyway, we'll worry when it comes around..
It's always more rewarding to do it the hard way. The team hardens up and learns more.

United were never a powderpuff team
