West Bromwich Albion 2:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Mon, 20 October 2014

Disappointed in the draw, but we can take positives. We did not give up, players actually fought back from their poor starts and mistakes to salvage something. If this was last season, the game was lost by the first goal.

Have to say, man of the match goes to Daley Blind, but it could have easily gone to Fellaini. Fellaini for his sheer impact on the game (even if it were for nought) but for sheer all round performance, it has to be Daley, great effort and a goal. Forgive me Daley, I doubted you so!
Yep. I was pleased to see us fighting. We need to keep going, we'll get there, no question about that.

I thought we played pretty well. Some of our passing in the second half reminded me of us at our best just without the final pass/ finishing touch.
RvP did not play badly he made some nice neat passes and was unlucky with a good shot. He was double marked throughout until Falcao came on so it was difficult for the midfield to pass to him.
When Fellaini came on I thought we would put more airballs into the box but DiMaria, despite his good overall game, kept driving in his corners too hard and low towards the goalkeeper. He should have hung them up more so that Fellaini could use his height advantage.
Fellaini can be useful coming off the bench when we need a goal but only if we strive to make use of his height.
Herrera, Mata and Januzaj were disappointing. Jones still needs some maturity he needlessly got involved at centre field thus leaving space for theirattack and second goal.
I still would like to see RVP and Falcao play more together they actually look like they want to connect with each other and if they can get it to click we would be extremely formidable in attack.
I am still not worried despite the result because today I saw a glimpse of what the future may hold.

When I look at the teams we have already played and where they are sitting in the table I start to get worried. We shouldn't be looking for "progress" against these teams, they should be routine, I was hoping to see progress against the better teams. I really fear that a bad loss to Chelsea could see us go into a tail spin.

Players can't have one bad game.

Herrera has been up there with DiMaria & Blind so far this season, until tonight faultless, he's bedded in so quickly which is massively impressive.

Im sorry but that post is a mile beyond overkill.
Herrera should have either been on the bench or given another game to recover. We don't know if his rib is still bothering him and it has taken playing in a game for him to know it. He has been impressive in the games he has played up to today. He had an excuse. Other players were just downright awful.

The following players should never be in our starting line up when we play away in a tough fixture this season - Mata, Herrera, Januzaj and we need to find a proper cm to take Jones' s place too

Mata should be sold in january
Herrera and Januzaj are 2 years away from being ready for tough away games
Jones is looking like he may never make it long term here

The rest of our team is not bad. Blind looks like real quality.

We need a new box to box midfilder ala strootman, a new cm ala vlaar and a new winger too ...van gaal needs to offload a few more deadwood players like Mata and Smalling too
Herrera? that's ridiculous.

Sloppy defending cost us. Fellaini changed the game when he came on, he did very well. Herrara was very disappointing. Di Maria was lovely as always. Van persie was poor as was mata.

Overall it was a decent performance bar two lapses of concentration both by Rojo IMO.

Chelsea up next which is terrifying.

We need a defensive Midfielder. Play Jones next to blind, he really needs help. Rooney back will be a massive help too. Midfield is talented but lacks steel, really unbalanced.

I don't care much for the excuse, sore ribs affect your mobility but not a lot else... he was cleared fit.

His first few touches where very poor and it shook him clearly, he still tried but it wasn't going well - it happens.

The two goals conceded couldn't have come at worse times. Them scoring so early allowed them to sit back for most of the first half.

Then when we equalized and started to show complete dominance in the match they somehow hit us again via some absolutely woeful defensive positioning by our backline.

You just can't win when you keep conceding goals at such important moments.

Craig Dawson would walk in this team looking at him this season.

He'll look just as clueless if we put him along side a new partner every week. We're never going to look good at the back until we get a settled partnership going. Particularly when the rest of our team is so open and attacking.

The stats say it all. We had more possession at The Hawthorns than any team so far.

WBA scored with their only two shots on target. I think we've just been unlucky (hitting the post), plus with defenders like Shaw and Jones pressing the self-destruct button every so often, we never help ourselves.

3 of those teams were Burnley, Hull and Sunderland though. The only good team to go there was Everton and they won 2-0 so obviously surrendered possession to the home team.

I think we will have a good idea come Christmas.

He has literally come back from injury after two months and has one mistake, and everyone is calling for his head. Stop the kneejerking. The lad is 21-22, he has years ahead of him to improve. All he needs to find is consistency.
He's gonna be a monster defender but Jones still might be 3 years away from getting to the level needed

Anyone listening to this post match interview? If Fellaini's 'bump' had been given in the build up to his goal, I'd have lost my shit. Is any sort of physical contact not allowed in football now?

Can't seem to catch a break. That's probably down in large part to the defence being a shambles though. We had good periods today but couldn't sustain it and then like usual someone at the back would have a brain fart and the opposing team tuck away the only chance they get. We'll get there but much tougher games on paper coming up which is a bit of a worry.

2 chances for the opposition and 2 goals. Weirdly, I don't think we were that bad at the back compared to the other games so far this season. Had loads of the ball but with the exception of Di Maria, had no idea what to do with it. One of those games where if your attackers are even half there normal best, they would score. Rvp got a lot more involved once Falcao came on and he was pushed back. Mata was very poor tonight. Just didn't get involved or poor touch/pass and so easily brushed off. Fellaini did well and scored a great goal. Blinds goal was another good one as well.

Too many passengers again tonight. Van Persie is the biggest waste of time, he was supposed to be leading by example tonight being captain and he was pants! At times they passed the ball around Blind like he wasn't there as he was too slow to close them down, the CM lacks pace desperately. Our away form is very poor, need to get going if we're going to make top 4.

Shoulder to Shoulder is fine, he might have a point here as the push was in the back, still a big lad like Lescott should be strong enough to attack a ball under a bit of contact.

We had 64% possession, 22 shots and 7 on target. Statistically we played well going forward.

I agree with LVG, that was just about our best game away so far.

Surprised at so much negativity about the defense. The first goal was a wonder strike, it was Di Maria who lost his player, not much the defense could do about it. The second, Yes, Jones was a bit too keen to get involved which ultimately caused the back line issues. However, WBA did not really look like the would break the back line, even when they passed through the midfield with ease. That was the worrying thing.

We are better with the ball, than we have been for years. Last year, in particular, we were lucky if we did more than 2 or 3 passes before losing the ball. We still have a number of players who haven't got going yet. Mata, RVP and Adnan were not very good today. Hard to see what the others did that was so wrong, without being exceptional.

Di Maria and Falcao make so many things happen. I fancy, Falcao to start to start against Chelsea.

Haven't seen his post match comments but I would agree with that. Just one of those very frustrating games tonight.

According to GNev, Rafael and Blind were marking on corners tonight.

West Brom didn't have a corner.

Prat!

He's starting to wear on me now, pretty much encouraging Moyes style football. You don't buy some of the most technically gifted players in the World like Di Maria just to lump long balls to the back post all the time.

For the people mentioning Herrera, agree he was disappointing but that's not forgetting he was playing with a broken rib (or something). Suspect he was playing with a lot more discomfort than we could tell and hence why LVG took him off at halftime.

For me, this is the most frustrating game I've watched us play all season.
Frustrating because we dominated and didn't win. If we had won, the caf would be all about how we have learnt to come back in games again.

We hit a brick wall, we just didn't have the magic to break it down. Pretty sure if we had a better option than Adnan today we would have got the points.

I agree, apart from that mistake, which we could argue if Rafael was watching the play and moved up, we would have caught their player offside and they probably would not have got another chance. Jones, did alright for a come back game.

Herrera shouldn't have been in the starting lineup, he wasn't fit and he was afraid to go into challenges and that created a huge gap in our midfield. There wasn't anyone to carry the ball and connect the lines and it resulted to Blind and the CBs trying hoof balls towards our attacking players.

Fellaini will get praise for the wonderful goal he scored, and rightfully so, but he didn't bring anything new to the table in the second half. We still can't get the ball quickly out of our half and it hurts us. Even with all the possession we enjoyed today we created very little from the central channels.

Jones looked rusty but did ok, Rojo was our best player today imo, Shaw was pretty solid and Rafael had a typical day in the office: Excellent for the most parts of the game with good runs forward but lacking concentration at times and costing the team goals. LvG set us to play with a high defensive line to turn the game around, Rafael could clearly see the whole play and the attacker's run and he should have reacted better. WBA got a lead they didn't deserve and they eventually got a point.

Januzaj was kind of disappointing today but we didn't help him tactically either. His inability to create something with his right foot and the fact that he can't outmuscle the opposition FB when cutting inside leave him with limited options and make him quite predictable. He can be a threat when he has teammates near him to play one twos, pass the ball and run into space. It's strange that our plan was to create 1v1 situations for him, i don't remember him being much of a dribbler.

People will moan about Mata and RvP. We can get the best out of Mata when we provide him with the opportunity to see enough of the ball in the final third and give him enough time and space with it. Right now we can't steal balls in dangerous areas and we usually regain possession deep in our third of the pitch. Our build up play is also slow at the moment. This results in Mata getting the ball tonight with WBA already having formed two narrow lines of four behind the ball. Mata's substitution was right and i'm afraid it will always be right if these two problems don't get solved.

RvP stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes because tactically it was more sane to substitute Mata. He's out of form surely but for a forward playing mainly in the box in our system we didn't really give him much to work with.

We saw a change of formation today, although the tactics were similar to the previous games with the exception of Di Maria's role on the pitch. Maybe it was a test for the next two games in which we're going to have a lot of work to do on the wings. Massive games ahead, we could find ourselves chasing Liverpool and Arsenal again.

They had set-pieces. Marking from wide freekicks is identical to corners. Chill.

I'm strangely relaxed about tonight's game, for some reason. Still seeing signs of improvement. Which is encouraging. Chelsea will smash us though. Oh well.

we came from behind twice...and we went for the win right till the end.... a couple more minutes..and we would have won in Fergie time...;)

Agree with the calm part. Not so much with the Chelsea one. We can do better than that. I'm not scared of them.

Amazed at the excuses being made. Albion set up exactly as they need to in order to beat us, and they will be gutted they didn't. We're so easy to take points off these days - opponents just watz through us. Defensive problems are not just down to the back line personnel - we're dire as a team.

Honestly think it was just an off day, even Rafael who has become incredibly consistent had an off day.

RVP and Mata again were shite, Januzaj proving why he shouldn't be in the team and our defense, well, I don't think anyone in the league could have struck the ball better for the first goal, 1 out of every 100 shots that.

Only positive I have from the game is we had a never say die attitude towards the end which we haven't seen in years, plus we're getting better at creating chances and keeping possession, if only everyone wasn't so shit today we might have scored more.

We're decent on the ball and half decent going forwards but feck me I shit a brick every time we concede possession. We are so brittle at the back.
