PL D FA Premier League

West Bromwich Albion 2:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Mon, 20 October 2014

Got to be going to these places and winning if we want that top four spot. The resilience was there tonight and was credit to the lads for coming from behind twice but ghez WBA had two chances and our defense couldn't cope.. their, let's be honest average premier league defense kept our stars quite for the majority.

Not sure, our overall play in the middle and going forward wasn't bad. Lacked cutting edge in the final third. And we just can't be fecking organized in defense ever. Disappointing definitely though. But we can't expect to score 3 goals every match to win.

Poor result, not playing well, defense isn't near good enough and likely won't be without new signings, much harder challenges on the horizon.

Not too worried in the grand scheme of things but short term I don't like what our form says about the upcoming Chelsea, City and Arsenal games, or even the smaller games around them.

Rafael and Shaw were exceptional. I wouldn't trade either for others in their position at this point. I thought Rojo was also good. Jones a complete liability.

Decent performance in patches but shit result, especially considering we face Chelsea and City in succession next.

Also, not trying to single him out, but Van Persie also needs to be dropped against Chelsea.

Comfortably the better team yet we drew 2-2. Two points dropped for sure. Not that bad a result as a standalone, but given the fixtures we have coming, it's a poor result.

We are not that poor imo (that's why I don't get that we are as shit as under Moyes, we aren't imo). But we really need to reward ourselves in a game. We had tons of good spells where we really should have scored to change the game, but we never score a single one, instead of that we concede because of a silly mistake and make every game as hard as possible. Teams like Chelsea also often need just 5-10 good minutes to finish their opponents off. It seems like every shot and attack from the opponent results in a goal. It's really frustrating right now with those 2 heavy games next.

Lacking confidence defensively, no Rooney, Di Maria and Falcao jet lagged, RvP in decline - probably a fair result all things considered.
Jones was obviously not match fit and Herrera looked like someone who hadn't played for a while and might still have that rib injury. Jones should have had some reserve games before coming back in. That is if we ever actually play any reserve games. We deserved more.

What's to say apart from absolutely infuriating

Useless defensively

going to get absolutely walloped by Chelsea and city

Bottom 6 in a few weeks time almost guaranteed.

I think more emphasis needs to be put on keeping a clean sheet. We are always going to drop points if we concede in this manner. The first goal was literally being caught out off of a nothing ball. Credit to sessegnon for the strike. The second goal was schoolboy error in which our two centrebacks are clearly nowhere close to a cohesive partnership.

At 1-1 we had the game under control and yet once again found a way to make it hard for ourselves. We really need to start looking at ourselves and maybe field a more defensive lineup to protect the backline. For example, Carrick/Fletcher and Blind with Mata dropped to the bench. We are not making top 4 if we keep conceding these silly goals and giving ourselves monumental tasks during what should have been a comfortable win.

Very disappointed with Mata and RVP. Both were underpar today and neither showed any form of leadership or urgency. Also thought Januzaj was pretty poor but that's because he was played on the right wing which isn't his natural position. All his crosses were terrible.

Rafael and Blind were my co- man of the match.

Januzaj the absolute worst.. Rafa did what he could with no help going back. Another two points lost... We need to be quite lethal in the second half to get close to the moneybags..

We were unlucky and should have won. Our defenders were slow at times playing it forward but we had enough chances to win the game. Why the defence were trying to play offside close to the half way line i'll never know. fecking stupid. No need to take such a risk and we got punished for it.

Rojo Mata Jones and Herrera were awful, but Herrera can be excused a bit because he was still injured.

Don't know why Falcao wasn't brought on earlier. Van Persie wasn't doing anything alone and their defenders shit themselves when he came on. He should've been subbed on straight after the Fellaini equaliser.

The opposition go into our games planning to attack us from the off, yet we still stand off them. They'll only stop doing that once we show that we can defend, and at the minute we're still producing some schoolboy stuff at the back.

If we could defend we win the game but our defence is shocking at the moment and until that improves we are going nowhere.

That fecking defence. It's costing us so many points. There were times today when we were well on top, but then fold under the slightest pressure. Away from the defence, RVP should have been taken off and replaced with Falcao early in the second half. Didn't contribute much today, and I think Falcao would have led the line better. Januzaj was frustrating today as well IMO. Kept fumbling over the ball in possession.

Disappointed in the draw, but we can take positives. We did not give up, players actually fought back from their poor starts and mistakes to salvage something. If this was last season, the game was lost by the first goal.

Have to say, man of the match goes to Daley Blind, but it could have easily gone to Fellaini. Fellaini for his sheer impact on the game (even if it were for nought) but for sheer all round performance, it has to be Daley, great effort and a goal. Forgive me Daley, I doubted you so!

Januzaj the absolute worst.. Rafa did what he could with no help going back. Another two points lost... We need to be quite lethal in the second half to get close to the moneybags..

Mata was worse than Januzaj to be fair

Very bad first half, mediocre second half. We made two huge mistakes in the back and got punished. The team just seemed off pace today, I expect to see a different performance next week.

One big mistake each from Rafael and Rojo cost us 2 points today. Overall I think we played ok in the second half we were the better team and if RVP shot had gone in instead of hitting the post or we would have been awarded the penalty for the handball we could have walked away with all the 3 points today.

That was a bigger mistake from Jones than Rafael for teh second goal, leaving his man is a big no no.

We should have maintain the Diamond shape, can't wait for Rooney to come back.
That's what I thought watching it. Di Maria has been so good for us playing more centrally, he's really helped the whole team to play more centrally and it's benefited us. Put him back out on the wing and you will get lovely crosses from him, but everyone else will pass it out to the wings in front of the box constantly and won't try anything through the middle. Made us very predictable and easy to defend against

This team will never be all it can be with this defence. Its not just the constant conceding, its the effect it has on the players, they must constantly be on edge and you can't play free flowing expressive football when your players are on edge and don't have faith in the defence.

the problem is at the back... our team loses confidence as soon as we concede, like pretty much any other team.

to pin point any one player as being poor, is unfair given the entire team played poorly. however, with that said, it almost looks like RVP is an old man out there. he just doesn't create much or finish much any more.

i couldn't believe how often mata and blind conceded possession. januzaj was too timid with the ball. anyway, i could go on and on. easy for me to do that from my couch.

Don't know why Falcao wasn't brought on earlier. Van Persie wasn't doing anything alone and their defenders shit themselves when he came on. He should've been subbed on straight after the Fellaini equaliser.

Agreed. Really brought a lot of physicality to the front line and made things happen! Although of course he might not have been ready for 90 minutes of action.

Im curious to see how we will line up for the big match on Sunday. Possibility we will see both RVP and Falcao together again?

This squad is clearly a work in progress.

I still say we have a squad of individually great players who don't fit well as a team. I hope the Mata/Vidal swap rumor is real 'cause he, Mata, is the hardest person to fit into the squad and just don't think he's worth the trouble. Also it's time to sit RVP.

Blind MOTM for me. WBA looked dangerous on the counter-both of their goals in acres of space in front of the box.

Glad Fellani got off the schinde. Maybe will use this to gain his confidence.

D obviously a problem. Need to establish a CB partnerahip and stop screwing around.

Bench RvP and Januzaj to teach them a lesson. For Chelsea I'd go with:

DDG
RAFAEL-------SMALLING-----------EVANS------------SHAW
BLIND
HERRERA----------------DI MARIA
MATA
ROONEY--------------FALCAO

Two brainfarts cost us. Shaw's gone too tight too high up the pitch, and we got busted on the counter. Great finish from Sessegnon to be fair to him. Unstoppable really once he got the ball.

Jones has done the same thing and left a massive Berahino-shaped gap by being magnetised to the ball, when there was no real pressure. I really like Jones, but he has those rushes of blood to the head and just has to charge the ball down. He needs to stop that. It was the midfields job to close that ball down.

RVP is annoying to watch. He still looks like he's capable of something special. Unlucky to not score, but his movement in the box is non-existent. Everything he does looks so slow and laboured. For once, our crossing was really good, but he wasn't trying to attack the ball.

The second goal was obviously Jones fault and I don't see how anyone can blame Rojo for Sessengon's opener.

This team will never be all it can be with this defence. Its not just the constant conceding, its the effect it has on the players, they must constantly be on edge and you can't play free flowing expressive football when your players are on edge and don't have faith in the defence.

ah yes. this is exactly the problem. i strongly believe that our poor defensive play has a severe adverse effect on our attacking players.

One of those games were if we could defend it would have been a comfortable 2-0 win, but we can't, so we didn't.

Far too many players underperformed. When Di Maria is firing in dangerous crosses, we need players on the pitch who have a reasonable chance of getting on the end of them. Januzaj was at least trying to do so. Mata seems irrelevant in this system. Herrera was awful first half. Rafael had a dreadful spell in the 2nd including playing Berahino on-side for their 2nd. I thought Shaw was poor, Jones gave the ball away too often. Blind woeful 2nd half until his goal.

Fellaini looked our best player in the 2nd half. Di Maria impressive in the first. RVP unlucky to hit the post. Falcao did ok in his few mins.
