West Bromwich Albion 2:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

It's been an annoying theme this season that every decent attack the opposition puts together usually ends in a goal. 2 shots on target, 2 goals.

We had 20 straight minutes at the beginning of the 2nd half of menacing and dangerous attacks and we can only manage a goal, the first time we let them have a touch of the ball they find themselves in behind of our defence to slot one home.

fecking Jones. Almost gave them a penalty as well! Berahino could have gone down.

LVG was piss poor again, didn't understand his tactics and him persitantly playing RvP when even Stevie Wonder can see he is struggling.

The stats say it all. We had more possession at The Hawthorns than any team so far.

WBA scored with their only two shots on target. I think we've just been unlucky (hitting the post), plus with defenders like Shaw and Jones pressing the self-destruct button every so often, we never help ourselves.

I still say we have a squad of individually great players who don't fit well as a team. I hope the Mata/Vidal swap rumor is real 'cause he, Mata, is the hardest person to fit into the squad and just don't think he's worth the trouble. Also it's time to sit RVP.

I think they do fit together well, but are in the process of learning to play Van Gaal's way. Its difficult to add this many players to a squad in transition and expect them to immediately play up to their potential. It will take time and won't be solved by additional signings. The players have to learn to play together as a team.

We went back to being a hugely frustrating team towards the end there. Fellaini and Blind in the middle with two up top, and every time Rafael/Januzaj/anyone in a wide position got the ball, Fellaini ran up top, just in line with the far post and waited. That's bad enough, but what made it worse was that they passed it around trying to build it up, with just one midfielder and essentially three strikers. So so frustrating to watch.

Van Persie was shit, Mata too, Januzaj not much better. Falcao and Carrick in for Van Persie and Mata for Chelsea, and maybe Valencia in for Januzaj if he's back.

That was a bigger mistake from Jones than Rafael for teh second goal, leaving his man is a big no no.
I don't agree with that for me the biggest mistake for that goal is Rafaels brain fart you always stay in line with the rest of the defence especially that high up the pitch.

Bench RvP and Januzaj to teach them a lesson. For Chelsea I'd go with:

DDG
RAFAEL-------SMALLING-----------EVANS------------SHAW
BLIND
HERRERA----------------DI MARIA
MATA
ROONEY--------------FALCAO

You're dreaming. RvP will play the entire 90 minutes, even if he's on one leg.

Also Smalling? No thanks, don't need any sunday league defending against the title challengers.

Rafael played Berahino on for the second goal. That was really poor. Made another terrible mistake after that when he kept the ball in play and just ended up gifting it to the WBA player in a great position. They didnt have enough men forward to hurt us.
He's always good going forward. Defensively.. not so much.

Our whole backline is a mess.

I don't get what value LVG or any of the coaching team is adding to the squad. That amount of attacking talent is bound to have a few good moments.. And that is all we are getting from our players.

And this is not a LVG out post. Not even close. I just don't get what he is doing. The formations keeps changing. We still don't have a system. We don't have a best XI. Just throw in the best players we have and let them figure it out.

Also I don't think LVG will have the balls to drop RvP against Chelsea.

Falcao will start instead of Januzaj I think.

And for Chelsea we should start with Carrick and Herrera.

I dont know. Mata will probably start too unless LVG changes formation or sthing.

Pathetic performance in my opinion. Our build-ups are boring, slow and dire. We only look lively when Di Maria gets on the ball.

We only really pressed West Brom when the time was running out.

It's got to the point where I don't even want to watch our games because I get so frustrated. The progress from last season is minimal thus far. The big names on the team sheet mean fück all.

We tried 50 long passes/balls today! That's one every two minutes, and only 28 of them successful.

We tried 43 crosses today. Successful crosses? 7. Add a couple maybe for Di Maria' s goal attempts. Still a success rate of <25%

Very surprising style of play I say when height is not exactly your strength, except for Fellaini

We'll see but I think trying to fit Rooney, RVP, Falcao and Mata in to the same side, or even 3 of them, is more of a detriment then help.

When we don't have complete control of football matches we're extremely vulnerable. LVG has to do something about this, not only is our defence an absolute shambles, our team defence is an absolute shambles as well. Absolutely puzzled by what some of these lads are thinking. Whats even more concerning is that we're about to face teams that will probably dominate us in the middle of the pitch and that's gonna cause us some big problems.

The most annoying moment of the match for me was when Mata took that shit free kick in the first half instead of Di Maria.

We changed a formation after what 5 games I think. Every manager should have a few formations not just one. Changing formations isnt our problem, problem is we werent too good today.

Also we're basically playing with the same teams or similar for a while now. We have our best 11..

Showed character to come back from defeat two times but still not enough ahead of games against Chelsea and City. We really needed a confidence boost ahead of those tough fixtures but we blew it up.

Januzaj and Van Persie incredibly lucky to play the full 90, and whilst I expect Januzaj to be dropped for the next match RVP will still probably play the 90 vs Chelsea which is quite ridiculous considering is form.

Also, Fellaini should've stayed high up the pitch, within minutes of being on he'd scored, should have had him playing behind Falcao for the rest of the match imo. Oh, and finally, surely LVG should have told Young and Januzaj to swap wings? We needed crosses coming in across goal not them both cutting back every single attack.

We really needed a win tonight - we'll get fecked by Chelsea and City. Things are looking bad.
I was just about to say "Knowing us, we will go and beat Chelsea" but that was when Fergie was here. We have yet to see whether Van Gaal can get get those kind of big game results when going through a slump like Fergie used to often do.

It really begs the question of when we will actually win our first away match?

LVG needs to realize that defending might be the priority to get the 3 points away from home. We will not beat teams on our travels if we concede 2 goals.

Reminds me of the season when we smashed the gooners 8-2 and we went on to a few more high scoring matches in which our mentality was to try and score regardless of the scoreline which led to the 6-1 mauling by citeh. Fergie then tightened everything up and we went on a run of 5-6 matches in which we won 1-0. Not saying we are capable of doing this with our current personnel but I think the mentality has to change. We need the players to think clean sheet rather than scoring 3 goals.

LVG thinks tonight was our best performance of the season? I realise we improved in the 2nd but I really didn't think we were good at all

I thought we were a bit unlucky tonight. We'll have results like this while we are trying to play a high line with a new defence.

The following players should never be in our starting line up when we play away in a tough fixture this season - Mata, Herrera, Januzaj and we need to find a proper cm to take Jones' s place too

Mata should be sold in january
Herrera and Januzaj are 2 years away from being ready for tough away games
Jones is looking like he may never make it long term here

The rest of our team is not bad. Blind looks like real quality.

We need a new box to box midfilder ala strootman, a new cm ala vlaar and a new winger too ...van gaal needs to offload a few more deadwood players like Mata and Smalling too

Sounds like spin, though we played the ball well, totally dominated and also showed character to come back, which has been sorely lacking.

Still doesn't sit well though...

Van Gaal looks like a myth at the moment. Didn't see much progress tonight. Moyes could've been the manager for large spells of tonight.

Think we might do ok against chelski. We've been decent at home apart from the opener. In hindsight this result might spur us on. Who knows, we also might have a higher level of concentration against the bigger clubs. The two defensive errors today were schoolboy level.

Finishing wasn't great and the defence is just mid-table all-over.

Something needs to change or we'll be seeing more players leaving next summer.

I disagree. For large portions of the games we were passing a 1000x better than last year. We just need to start putting those chances away.

People are being a tad harsh on Jones for the second goal. The player was in space and receiving the ball so he had a tough choice on whether to step out or not. Once he made that choice, his CB partner should be moving across to cover because there were no other players to mark. Rafael also played him onside.

He has literally come back from injury after two months and has one mistake, and everyone is calling for his head. Stop the kneejerking. The lad is 21-22, he has years ahead of him to improve. All he needs to find is consistency.

Players can't have one bad game.

Herrera has been up there with DiMaria & Blind so far this season, until tonight faultless, he's bedded in so quickly which is massively impressive.

Im sorry but that post is a mile beyond overkill.
