Gaming Pokémon Strumfest

Im bidding on a full set of Japanese Gym Challenge Holos, some of my absolute favourites in that set. Rocket's Zapdos, Blaine's Charizard etc

Awesome. I have complete base and neo sets in Japanese, they look so much better. At some point it becomes abundantly clear that they are the originals, and the English ones are somewhat knock-off. Print quality for almost every set is better in Japanese, with the newer ones being absolutely perfect. The average collector may not care too much about that, but English cards are prone to come out of the packs with scratches, chips and nicks.

Does that work out more expensive or can you get them from the UK for the same price?

If you're talking new release, I'd estimate it's almost the same price. I can't be sure on that though. You'd have to do some ebay research as it can vary set by set.

Ah right.

I think if I was going to buy any, I'd just buy random packs from any sets, rather than focus on trying to complete certain ones.

Another old fave. Had this in English.

I sold my full collection before I moved house in 2014, but with the announcement of the Generations set, I've so far picked up two of each Mythical Collection Box (and two each of the Red & Blue Collection Boxes). I'm mainly looking to keep things sealed, but I wanted one of each of the Pin Badges for display and I plan to sell the spare (unweighed, not that it matters in this set with the pull ratio) boosters once they're out of print. I also have an Original Base Set Booster Box still sealed in the plastic and once I get more money together I'll be looking to try and get more of the Wizards of the Coast sealed boxes. However, with prices going up it's going to be difficult. I definitely think this is something you need to invest in soon as I got my Base Set Booster Box for £700 last year and now you're lucky to find one for less than £1,000 - £1,200. Jungle and Fossil you may be able to find for under £500, which I'm hoping to do when I have the money spare. Prices will keep going up though as they've been out of print for over a decade and more people keep opening them for YouTube videos etc.

In other news, I am qualified to compete in the Pokémon Video Game World Championships in San Francisco this August, so whilst there I'll get a goodie bag with some neat World Championship exclusive stuff and maybe some promo cards. I'll also be looking to buy as much merchandise as I can to bring back with me.

Nice! What's the most cost effective way to get the Generators boosters? Trying to find the best priced collection boxes online? I know prices do vary because the Fates Collide tins are £13 in Tesco and £17 in Toys R Us so there are savings to be made I've just not looked in to it yet.

I have no will power though and I don't think I could keep sealed boxes and packs like some do. I might look at it from an investment perspective though as the prices look well protected and consistent.

Don't forget to upload some pics of the goodies you get from the event. Looking forward to hearing how you get on!

Yeah I really want a load of the Generations boosters but they are more expensive than all the others it seems.

I'm not one for keeping stuff sealed, I don't get it, how can you sleep at night not knowing what's inside the packs!

You complete the sets so it doesn't matter what's inside! ;)

I've found actually that GAME's online webstore is the best place to get the Mythical Collection Boxes at RRP (£12.99). I was originally using Chaos Cards who are generally great and offered most of them at £12.95, however judging by prices it seems that the Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, and Manaphy boxes so far are the most sought after, with Shaymin joining those ranks as that is one of the few to actually sell out on pre-orders alone (not yet released). The Darkrai box has held RRP while the remaining ones yet to be released don't see to be too expensive. The other five I've mentioned so far though, if you see one at £15 or under it is probably worth picking up as it seems that TPCi are not printing much more (they may surprise us toward the end of the year and do another print run but for the sake of an extra £2-3 it's probably worth taking the punt).

If it's just as many boosters as possible you want though, the Red & Blue Collections are far more cost-effective and easier to find at RRP. Currently only the Charizard and Blastoise versions are released, but their RRP is about £15.99-£19.99 and they include four booster packs rather than two when compared with the more expensive Mythical Collection Boxes. Venusaur and Pikachu versions will be released later this year. However, if you do find yourself buying multiple of these four-booster boxes at around £20, you might as well just buy some of these (set to release in September):

pokemon-pokemon-elite-trainer-box-generations-p136279-151541_image.jpg

Includes 10 booster packs for RRP £44.99~

Last time I checked, single boosters for Generations were going for £6-7, but this could be down by now as stock of the less sought after Generations Collection Boxes seem to be holding out in terms of stock levels and pre-orders, so only idiots would be buying single boosters at that cost when they can find two in a Collection Box itself for £13~.

Yeah I really want a load of the Generations boosters but they are more expensive than all the others it seems.

I'm not one for keeping stuff sealed, I don't get it, how can you sleep at night not knowing what's inside the packs!

It is always tempting, but I'm done with collecting the cards now, I just want sealed stuff to display for a few years with my other collectables then try to sell for when I want something like a new car haha

Just checked Chaos Cards actually and you can get the Darkrai Box for £10.95 which is great and even the Celebi Box is £14.95 so more stock must have finally arrived. However, when you look toward the Manaphy, Jirachi, and Mew boxes they're looking like £20+ purchases if you can even find the stock (and Shaymin is pretty hard to find now).

I managed to get Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi at £10.95 initially and my profit on these already just this year is probably in the region of £40 if I decided to sell now. Obviously going to keep them for a few years first though!

Chaos Cards do have the single Generations Boosters in stock now as well! Selling at £3.95 for a single, £3.80 each if you buy 5+, or £3.50 each if you order 10+. That's probably the most cost-effective way right now, but you do get extras with the collection box things obviously.

Awesome I'm gonna pick some up Thursday when I get paid.

Bought a case of Fates Collide. I quite fancy the Break Through set, just can't find one cheap. Paid £57.00 for 36 Fates Collide boosters in box, sealed, cracking deal with free postage.

My Break Point cards are up for sale on eBay. If I don't get what I want for them I'm going to hang on and pick off the missing Full Art/EX's I need cheap when possible and have the complete set.

I used to love the cards as a kid and put a binder together, but god knows what happened to that!

I love the artwork on some of them, and whilst i'd love to start building a collection, i'd not have a bloody clue where to start now!!

@Ady87 @Havak - can you guys post your collections / highlights from them?

Oops, need to stop going to Tesco.

Hahahaha that was my car the other day mate. Some Chicken Pasta Salad and a feckin Pyroar Breakpoint Blister pack.

Also nipped Toys R Us on the long way home from work for a few packs as well, I'm definitely addicted again. I've got some footy memorabilia valued at about £400 going unused and under appreciated in its box. Might get it on ebay to fund my addiction and get a collection going.

@Heardy - Believe it or not mate I've only been back on board a week! I don't know where to even start in rebuilding a collection. I'd love to start from the Gym Heroes/Gym Challenge sets as that's where it got interesting for me but it's so easy to get swamped in all the different sets.

For now I'm going to play with the newer sets. Break Through/Fates Collide/Generations - Then when I get my bonus at the end of August I might start trying to pick up peoples collections at good prices to build my own.

Edit: Complete 1st Edition Gym Challenge set Graded by PSA 10 Mint, every single card. Over priced for me but wowwwwwww

I hate having boosters and having to wait to open them. I'm in the gym right now, can't help but think I'm probably the only person in here thinking about Pokemon cards.

Such a disappointing 6 packs, only 1 holo and no EX or Break or anything. Ah well such is life.

Ive seen someone on youtube pull a full art and a mega out of them blisters. I got nothing easier. Nothing worse than knowing the pack behind the one you picked up probably had something sweet in.

That guy just accepted my offer of 55 on a break through box ffs haha

I was planning to try and complete the Base Set 2 Holos, but never got around to it so I am open to selling them (preferably as a lot) and am also looking to sell the Fossil Cards and cards from newer sets. Could even be swayed to sell the sealed Base Set Booster Packs if the price is right (quite dear though as I'd want £65 including postage I reckon).

I'm definitely going to be sticking to sealed Wizards of the Coast products (pre-May 2003, before TPCi decided to self publish) and the current Generations expansion from now on. I am also keeping my Base Set Venu, Zard, Blastoise as they are in amazing condition and I think I'll frame them at some point.

I've got the Shaymin and Venusaur boxes coming next month, and there's one box a month released until the end of the year. Arceus in August, Victini in September, Keldeo in October, Genesect in November and Meloetta in December. There's also a Pikachu box at some point later this year and the Elite Trainer Box in September as well.

Just will power haha

I know they'll be worth a lot more to people sealed in the future and I really like sealed products for displaying. Got some video game limited editions and comic books as well!

I think the biggest rush from opening packs would be the POP Series 5 ones I have up there. They cost so much per (average of about £20) even though there are only 2 cards in the packet!

However, the reason for this is that these packs are the only way to pull a Gold Star Espeon and Umbreon. They aren't even holographic cards (which is good in a way as they can't be weighed).

The Espeon is such rare card that its Buy it Now / Best Offer lowest price on eBay is £450 (though there's a bidding war going on now which is only up to £120 so far). The Umbreon is worth less but still probably £200+.

For anyone seriously considering starting collecting again, you need to prioritise things properly and decide what kind of collector you want to be. I stopped collecting during high school around 2004. However, I picked it up again around 2009 (and still had all my old cards), but found myself just buying packs willy nilly, it wasn't cost effective and just buying what stores had in and single cards online was just a waste of a lot of money in the end. So, I decided to give it up and sold the lot before moving house.

However, I then wanted to invest in things that I actually had a good knowledge of and decided to take a punt on a sealed Base Set box, as it was at just over £100 less than I'd researched it was worth at the time. Since then I've bought a few boosters when I saw them on good deals (got the sealed Base Set and POP Series 5 collectively for under £100, probably £30+ profit if I sell now and that's just in the last five months). I probably won't do this now though and just focus on the boxes.

If you want to play the game, newer sets are the easiest. If you want to sell on doubles, newer sets are again probably the best as more people will again be searching for the cards at the time to finish their sets, or, find cards to build a deck to play a tournament. My suggestion, if it's cost effective to you, is to try and save up for a case:

https://www.chaoscards.co.uk/pokemon-c11/booster-cases-pokemon-c762

You will probably be close to completing a set for your own personal collection once you've opened three full boxes. From selling on doubles, job lots of non-rare cards, and two of your sealed boxes, you could be close to affording the next case of six boxes for the next set (generally one set every three months). Keep one box sealed and stored away, as the value increases very quickly. Eg. From £65-80 in the first few months, you could see it worth far more than £100 given a year.

Issue is that this is very costly when you're spending £400~ every three months (though after the first one you'll likely make half of this back in sales at least so its less costly as time goes on). If you want to just grab a box a time though, that's also cost effective and always fun to sit and open 36 packets in a row and feel like a kid again haha

If you're in it to make some money though, I think opening things these days is a way to lose money on the cards. It's rare that even the best cards for tournament play or rarest in the set are worth more than £20 and that's if you actually pull them. Odds are you want to keep those ones for your collection too, and selling all the lesser cards would both be a bit more difficult and need to be under £20 to interest people.

I don't think I can suggest being someone who just picks up some loose booster packets every few weeks though, there's nothing in that really unless you're just a bit of a junky for opening a pack of cards every now and then

I've decided I'm going to take my break point cards off ebay and try complete the collection. There are a few of the full art cards up fo auction with low starts and weird end times so I'm going to try snipe my way to a full set for under £100 investment. Reckon could get £150 for the full set.

Break Through booster box delivered tomorrow!

Already had an offer of £350 on my signed and framed 1999 CL final shirt so there's a few months worth of collecting sorted!

Can't remember if I've told this story before but it haunts me and for those that may not have heard it.... Just had a flashback of finishing school and flying down to the Yankee Trader shop in town. A guy that sold booster packs and imported Beanie Babies.

As I've said before, the guy bought back good cards for boosters and sold them in top loaders etc. I remember that through the means of persuasion and manipulation I had amassed a collection including Blaines Charizard, Blaines Arcanine, Dark Charizard, Dark Raichu, Base Set Blastoise and a few other cards that were very sought after at the time.

The guy had an Ancient Mew Promo he had got from America, weeks before the film was ever released over here. It was up for £49.99 which dwarfed every other card in the shop.

I had to give him everything to get it. I literally emptied my collection.

2 weeks later every kid in town had the same card free from the film along with one of the Ancient Bird promos and it was absolutely worthless.

Here is a video I put on youtube.

It's 6 years old and the quality is from a camera phone at the time. Apologies. It's had 42k views which surprised me a bit.

The Vaporeon is the first card I show then you can see page upon page of so,e nice cards!

Old post from 2014...has some cards in it. Very poor quality.
