Points countdown until top 4 is secured | 1 point left, 2 games to go | Can almost taste it...!

Imo we should get 3rd, finishing below Newcastle would suck
Probably need 4 wins and 1 draw for that, doable, of course, and largely in line with our ppg thus far (1.97). If they beat Le Arse though, we will have to win all of our remaining games, most likely.

Pretty good idea to have a countdown thread. How many points needed and how many games to do it in.

We should be getting at least 12 from those 7, and thats assuming the teams around us win every game until the end of the season.

They wont, though. They face all of the current top 4 in their last games.

Also Aston Villa away.

Even if Brighton are unlikely they'll win all, the thread title is still misleading since its still a possibility. We're considering 9 points needed as an absolute assuming Liverpool will win all their 5 games (which is also quite unlikely). I guess that's why couple of people have pointed it out.
True but Brighton got to play United (H), Arsenal (A), Newcastle (A), City (H), Villa (A). If Liverpool had those kind of fixtures left, we wouldn't be considering possibility of them winning all the games remaining either. Instead Liverpool have couple of tricky fixtures like Brentford or Villa but both at Anfield where they tend to win games + Leicester and Saints away where you'd expect them to win.

I have a bad feeling playing against Brighton, but let's see. Just feel 3rd would give us more of a "boost" than 4th which is the bare minimum

I wouldn’t be so sure about a Leicester team fighting for their lives. But again, from a mathematical perspective, we need 10 points.

They probably deserve 3rd this season TBF even though we have a game in hand on them and can go ahead.
  • 12 goals scored more
  • 12 goals conceded fewer (best defence in the league)
  • Only 4 defeats, same as Arsenal and City
They've been on fire since the league Cup final as well when they could have crumbled in the top 4 fight. Isak, Guimaraes, Trippier are all just quality players.

We've played much more games than them which drags our league form down, but not a big deal if we finish 4th with them 3rd. Main thing is just being among it.

We have to target to win all our remaining matches. We don't play Newcastle, so we shouldn't worry about what happens there. Brighton away is the only difficult match we have.

West ham away also a tough game generally, though it's hit and miss what you get this season. Can see us dropping points there (in addition to losing away to Brighton which feels like easy money). My guess is we win 4, draw 1 and lose 1 of the remaining 6, puts us on 76 points, which would be a good finish to the season (can't see us getting more). Can see Newcastle getting 76 or more though. Their form, they are fresh as they haven't had too many games, no injuries... I'd be surprised if we finish above them just given the injuries/fitness and we still have a cup final to think about.

I'm looking more at the hope of us a half decent gap between us and city at the end of the season, I'm fed up of season after season of man City being around 20 points better off at the end of a season, we should be aiming at 10-12 points off

We should beat Wolves, Chelsea, Bournemouth and Fulham and get at least a draw against West Ham. Brighton on Thursday is our most likely defeat but it won't be the end of the world.

Have to finish 3rd imo. Automatic CL qualification.
This is what I thought as well, but then someone here told me that 4th from the EPL gets automatic qualification these days too. I don't know who to believe anymore.

https://www.skysports.com/football/...he-premier-league-is-no-guarantee-this-season

The scenario where 4th doesn't get it no longer is possible (Chelsea winning CL and United winning Europa burnout of top 4). So it seems top 4 automatically

Liverpool have a pretty cozy schedule these last 5 games. Ten Hag needs to drill into the team that they will win out and us from this point ceding a CL spot to them would be an absolute disaster. Anyone not up for the fight needs to raise their hand and walk out.

Win these next 2 away games (Brighton/West Ham) and then I think we will comfortably see the season out.

Ten Hag shouldn't even be mentioning them he should be motivating them to finish the season strongly and secure third ahead of Newcastle .

How do people still not know the system after all these years.

Tbf, it's changed quite a bit through the years although has been stable as of late.

Just wait until the PL gets the extra sport in 24/25 for maximum carnage with people arguing by basing it off the old rules

If the premiership teams can have a semi decent run in Europe next season then it should be pretty easy for the league to get a 5th spot for the 2024/25 season. The EPL currently ranks 1st for this season and we only have Man City and West Ham left.

Hope they keep winning until dippers can't overtake them.

We say this.
Until realising Newcastle with champions league qualification become a different stratosphere of club and player appeal.

Me neither, Leicester could be tricky for them, but again it's not the same as going at Arsenal, Newcastle or Villa.

But you're right. 10 points needed in theory atm. Ten Hag will probably encourage them to try and win as much as possible and finish above Newcastle.

Not even that nowadays. Only if a club outside the top 4 wins CL and a club outside top 4 wins EL.
You're confused. 5th place never open up for CL.

When a club outside the top 4 wins CL and a club outside top 4 wins EL, 4th placed loses CL football for the following season.

5 team max from same league allowed in a CL season.

Yes I’m confused about what the other guy is saying. You’re right 5th place never opens up.

I think automatic qualification for fourth spot in the big leagues (Spain, Italy, Germany, England) happened 4 or 5 years ago at this point. Beating Brighton would be a massive boost to qualifying and give us some extra confidence for the trip to West Ham after.

win against brighton and that pretty much wraps it up.

I think people said the same if we won against Villa as well.

I have thought for a while that around 66-67 point should be enough, which still looks about right.

Although what would really mess with some people's heads would be if we lost against Brighton, and Liverpool won both their games before we play West Ham, meaning Liverpool would be within one point before we play that game, if that happened this and the other top 4 thread would be a mess.

Yeah being one point up, even with a game in hand, would be less than ideal. All because stupid ass Moura.
