Pochettino | Agrees to be US National Team Coach

Don’t think he’s entirely to blame for the season theyre having. To me there’s just no way what Chelsea did in the last 18 months was going to work instantly.
Yesterday however was massively on him. I think you saw the gulf in quality of managers in extra time.
He basically admitted they’d settled for penalties which is extraordinary considering Liverpools track record in penalty shootouts and the fact they had half an hour against a completely makeshift side.
From a tactical and man management standpoint that extra time period was completely damning for Poch. It was a complete no show.

I am trying to picture the team talk in the huddle after the 90.

"just go out there and try not to concede. And if you, don't worry, it's about the process, not the destination."

Genuinely think he prepares himself for failure to take off the pressure of not winning and this rubs off on his team. The anti-klopp.

You're not wrong. Mauricio has a holistic view to running a club, winning doesn't seem to be something he prioritises.

He believes in the processes rather than the results.

Poch admitting that he was playing for penalties when Chelsea were obviously the better side to close the 90 is a sackable offense. The most pathetic mentality imaginable, good grief

The funny thing is back then we had two options: him or Ten Hag. And there were heated debates between Ten Hagger and Pochfan (including his mum). But it wouldn't have mattered who we chose because they end up in a similar place and situation. You can't make this shit up.

Fair enough on the CBs.

I actually was pretty impressed with David Datro Fofana the other week when Arsenal played Burnley. He didn't get the ball much, so its a bit hard to draw too many conclusions. But there were a couple occasions where he did get the ball in space and got the better first of Saliba and then Gabriel. I understand why Chelsea loaned him but you could have used him in this match I think.

Fofana is another inexperienced player who needs time to develop though. He couldn't crack the starting line up at Union Berlin, it's the whole reason he's at Burnley now. He was called back early from his previous loan. I think he's talented but he's not the answer for right now.

I've always quite liked Badiashile, thought he was one of the better players under Potter. Assume he's another that's picked up a knock. Two years of Fofana being injured when he looked a terrific prospect at Leicester, Disasi would never have been signed if he could stay fit.

Colwill spent too long this season playing as inverted LB so you need to give him a proper run of 10-15 games as a CB which seems to be happening.

It will be interesting to see who Chelsea get in as the experienced CB to lead that group (you will sign one right....). Someone who's been there and done it and in 28-30 age bracket and who is rarely injured. That might not come up in Clearlake's Data stats but need an experienced head there, wasn't Ivanovic about 25-26 when he signed? Someone of that ilk.

Not suggesting him as a signing but Everton had endless defensive issues and they signed Tarkowski. Vastly experience, hardly misses a game through injury and Branthwaite has come on massively with experienced talker like him next to them so that is profile Chelsea need even if it isn't seen as a glamorous signing.

Badiashile picked up a knock in the cup win against you lot. They said he could miss another month or so. Silva then picked up an injury in the very next game vs Palace, hence why we're suddenly seeing Chalobah come off the bench.

I think Disasi is that guy. He turns 26 next month. There's also Chilwell who is 27 and James who is 24, both of whom have been starters for us for at least 4 seasons. You're right though, there's a lot of inexperience in the team. Gallagher is the most senior voice in the midfield and he's only 23.

I hear you on Tarkowski, but what we need is experienced winners and leaders. We're a team full of talented young players and the experienced players we do have aren't leaders. I'd kill to be able to pluck Van Dijk and Rodri out of Liverpool and City.

You’ve got a very similar leader to VVD in silva in that back line. Granted he wasn’t there yesterday but even when he has been this season it hasn’t made much difference to results. You’ve grossly overpaid for a number of players who aren’t performing, and it’s difficult to tell what their true level is until you get a proper coach in there.

Is the 200m+ combo of Enzo and Caicedo better than the 45m combo of mcallister and endo? Doesn’t look it, but the caveat is that there’s no way of knowing until you get a coach in there who is more effective at getting the most out of these players.

Absolutely criminal that. He was playing against a team with five academy players for the extra time period. Should be sacked for that alone.

I reckon he'll easily see out the season, alot of what is going on at Chelsea isn't his fault afterall, plus they'll be so many top clubs looking for a manager this summer that I'm not sure hiring what's let over will be an upgrade on Poch.

I can see so many parallels with how United have operated over the last 10 years, clueless owners, clueless recruitment, and hiring any top manager that is currently available, then blaming them when it's still crap, and just repeating the whole process again every 2-3 years.

Yes but United at your worst never dropped to the pathetic depths that we have dropped to. Pretty sure your lowest finish was 7th (maybe 8th?) while we finished 12th last season and are currently 11th. What we're doing right now is worse than any other big club's banter era.

So yeah, Poch isn't entirely to blame, but the stuff he is to blame for is 100% sack worthy. There's a much bigger conversation to be had, I think among Chelsea fans, about this ownership and what they're doing, but that's more of a long term problem. The immediate problem is Poch and what the team is producing right now.

Silva's legs have gone and the guy still barely speaks English. What I mean is a player who can be the best player in the team, and also the emotional and leader of the team. The amount of boxes Van Dijk ticks for Liverpool is crazy. I was just thinking out loud anyway, about potentially what this team desperately needs. People say experienced leaders, but that alone isn't enough.

Totally. Such a losing mentality, it can't help but infect the players too. Anyone with a desire to win any kind of silverware should avoid him like the plague.

It's not a crazy idea to begin with. But not sure he was strategically bringing on a proven penalty taker or something to execute this idea. His whole plan seemed to be to just leave it to chance and see what happens.

After yesterdays result the poor guy will have to change the lemons on his desk every 5 mins because there's too much negative energy for them to absorb

It's indefensible given the gamestate and the fact that Liverpool were down to their fourth choice players in several places.

Petrovic is by all indications a tremendous GK in penalties but it's still a ludicrous and cowardly approach.

We had them on the ropes. We were in the ascendancy and we had just watched Liverpool throw on a bunch of kids I had never heard of. ET would have been the time to throw caution to the wind and go for a knockout punch, not sit back, take the foot off the gas and play for pens. Poch is fecking coward and he needs to go.

Of all the finals we’ve lost in the last 6 years, this one is by far the most embarrassing. Props to Klopp and Liverpool. They’re basically everything we’re not and that’s a devastating indictment on Chelsea from top to bottom.

He didn't say that.

He said that the players were so knackered that in the second half of extra time, he thinks the players maybe felt that penalties were good but he doesn't blame them for that.

This is the clip, is this him saying "I told them to go to penalties"?

Chelsea shat the bed in extra time but the idea Poch told them to play for pens, based on that clip is obviously a bit silly.

I expect he'll be sacked end of season but we'll still be shit whoever is manager next year.

The problem is the owners and the strategy.

Do any Chelsea fans here think they should have stuck with Potter? His record isn’t looking as bad now - maybe he could have formed more of a style than Poch has managed so far?

I did at the time and was hammered for it.

We all know Chelsea have been a mess every since new owners came in and problems run deeper than Pochettino but you'd still expect him to do better this season. 11th in league while playing one game a week more often than not is poor. Their Carabao Cup run was good as they beat Brighton and Newcastle (amongst others) to reach the final so it's not like they had super easy draws along the way. Then while losing to Liverpool 1-0 in ET is not embarassing by any means, they probably should be winning that against the 11 that Liverpool had for the extra time. Also it would save the season and make it worthy. Now unless they somehow win the Fa Cup, it's basically same story as last year.

Poch is very good manager but unless he turns it around this Chelsea stint will hurt his reputation as much as PSG one. Perhaps his next job will be similar to Southampton/Spurs which could be a good thing and a chance to prove himself again. Perhaps West Ham will be interested if/when Moyes leaves.

Sky getting the "Breaking News" ready for Luton-Villa's HT. There is no point to keep him until summer, any random caretaker will do.

The fans have finally started to turn on him. Loud "feck off Mauricio" chants.

Funny that the Chelsea fans won't take the lowering of standards yet we're discussing if 5th place is a good finish and whether or not the manager is doing a good job.

If we were in 6th place within striking distance of 4th and 5th, there would be no noise around Poch’s job.

I mean, it took Chelsea fans a while to actually chant for his removal.
