Gaming PlayStation 5

Surely it's dead on arrival? Who wants a $200 handheld that can't play games on its own or cloud stream them? You're tied to your home wifi and local PS5 library. It's a baffling product.

I feel like with every new PS console , Sony get this wave of confidence from go knows where that they can successfully break the hand-held gaming market.
You aren't beating Nintendo, guys.

Yeah, it's a bit weird. The only thing that's good for me about it is that sometimes my wife wants to watch tv and I could play PS5 and sit beside her while she does but not really worth dropping £200 on.

I anyway do that using my MacBook. Remote play is pretty good. I really don’t get the fascination with handhelds - the bigger screen the better.

Random question, if a PS5 game supports keyboard and mouse, will I be able to play using the KBM on a laptop using remote play?

Whilst I think it’s too expensive - I am grudgingly buying it because it’s perfect for me. Most evenings the TV is in use by the kids or wife - this means I can actually play my games when I want

You could just use any tablet/laptop/phone?

It's more that they aren't beating smartphones, which have dominated the handheld market for the past decade or so.

The 3DS sold half as many units as the original DS did, and even sold less than units than the original PSP which I think shows how different the PSP/DS generation was compared to the one that came after it.

Granted the PS Vita had a fair few other issues like proprietary storage but maybe the biggest was the improved fidelity/graphics as it meant developers were asked to dedicate resources that were better served making console games instead.

Needless to say, Nintendo played a blinder going for a hybrid console that sold to the remaining corner of the dedicated handheld market while also capturing the home console market at the same time. Wii U failure aside.

Wouldn’t have the same experience though would I? Haptic feedback etc - the ability to turn on the console from the controller etc etc.

It’s about convenience

If you pair the ps5 controller through Bluetooth does the haptic feedback not work?

No idea mate - but (whilst ridiculously expensive) I’d rather just have one device rather than a separate controller and tablet etc

I was suggesting you use your existing controller and tablet/laptop/phone mate but fair enough.

I'm guessing you'll be able to stream cloud games to it at some point. Even if WiFi only.

If this handheld could use the PlayStation cloud streaming service then it might have been half decent.

My ps5 is in my office with a monitor and so I never have a situation where I can't use it due to a TV being used.

That Portal is one of the dumbest fecking things I’ve ever seen from Sony and that’s saying something. The fact that there’s no Bluetooth and you have to use sony headphones on it too is even worse. Idiots.

PSP was very popular wasn't it?

I've got a vita and I still think it was criminal how they failed to support it.

I'm still bitter about my Vita.

The lack of games plus the cost of the memory cards. Bastards.

Great piece of kit too.

Finally played and now finished God of War Ragnarok, though still with a ton of post-game content left. That was pretty much everything you could ask from a sequel. More of what was already very good, only better and larger in scale and ambition. It's not perfect, there are definitely some pacing issues, but that didn't bother me too much. It's not quite up there with the greatest games for me, but not too far behind either.

Ok, but all that is a complete waste if you have to squint to play it on your tiny phone screen.

It isn't bad actually, not played PS5 games on my phone for a while though.

I take it traveling and run an emulator on it. Tony hawk 2, soul calibre, nba jam and street fighter with BT headphones. Also I don't need a data connection :D.

Just got the platinum for God of War Ragnarok, that last boss (it was the last for me anyway) took a lot out of me. Harder than Sigrun, I'd say. Anyway, fantastic game, enjoyed pretty much all of my 50+ hours with it, with only some minor gripes here and there.

I do wonder if it's maybe time for Santa Monica Studio to go for a new IP next, or if it's God of War, to reinvent it once more. As good as this game was, I don't think we need another follow-up in the same style.

I got the metro bundle when it was on sale, last week. I replayed Exodus and it is fantastic game. I'm now playing the DLC. Not sure if I'll bother with the older games, though. I never loved them as much as Exodus.

Exodus is wonderful and the best of the lot for me. The Volga is one of my favourites spaces in gaming. I’d play a whole game build around that region. I played the first two after that and to be honest the remastered versions hold up very well - but know that they are almost entirely centered around the claustrophobic type sections you see n Exdous so not much open-ness.

After the price increase and horrible essential line up headlined by the much maligned Saints Row these are leaked to be part of the extra line up for September

  • NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139...
  • Star Ocean: The Divine Force
  • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
  • Sid Meier's Civilization 6
  • Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2
  • Unpacking
NieR is one I’ve always wanted to play as I absolutely adore Automata and I’ve heard 13 Sentinels is good. But they really need to start adding some heavy hitters given the new price. I expected one proper next gen game this month.

Don't think they've got any heavy hitters to go on there. Horizon 2 is already on there, maybe God of War 2 will be eventually, TLOU part 1 and 2 by I guess that's it? Lot of the recent exclusives are already there.

It doesn’t have to be exclusives there. I agree that it’s got a lot of the exclusives already (although Spider-Man Remastered would be a great addition). But something like Dead Space or Sofu or even RE Village would work - one big game a month would justify the price point. It’s better than giving 17 games out of which many are nothing titles.

I think PS plus has been great - especially extra tier. But over the last few months it’s gone down a notch.

I'm not sure its that attractive to developers like Capcom to have their stuff on gamepass. Not at this point in a game like RE Villages life span. Sony could throw money at them but I'm not sure thats a great use of resources. I think if the variety and fairly easy access to the existing library isn't attractive then its hard to sell it on new monthly additions. I think you'll run out of games of that quality before long if nothing else and your back trying to sell it as a library. Not to say that they shouldn't ever have good stuff either mind you.
They could do a better job of curating it to try and highlight some particularly good indie games. Work on the interface, which i find pretty awful.
I'm not convinced it has a long term future as a way of making money from this industry. Or as a desirable way to access games as a consumer. I think its primarily a trojan horse for microsoft and i dont see much obvious benefit or purpose to it for anyone else.

13 Sentinels is decent but more of a visual novel than an RPG. There is gameplay but those parts are entirely separate, although tied to the story as you can't progress until you've done one or the other.

The best part about the game is figuring out what's going on and trying to unpack the rather convoluted story. It reminded me of AI: Somnium Files in that respect (another game I loved).

Both my controllers have suddenly developed drift to the left, really weird that it has happened to both at the same time (after my brother borrowed the PS5 for a week)

They are unplayable now, I can't even switch games as everything just shoots to the left.

I have made sure they have the latest software, reset them both to factory settings, cleaned them though there is no visible dirt, none of it makes any difference. I have tried a friend's controller to check it's not the console, but that worked perfectly.

Anyone have any tips on what can be done or any idea how long Sony take fixing them under warranty? They're only 6 months old.

I have this with two of mine, and suspected in the third recently. I think it's just a persistent problem with the controllers and doesn't seem to be much criticism for it.

Happened to me recently, you get n automatic 1 year warranty on the from time of purchase, so won't will repair or replace for free for you. Sent mine of and said it could take up to 15 working days once they received the package, but I got a replacement arrive 5 working days after they received, so had no complaints.

Does seem to be a recurring situation though, so I'm expecting it to happen again.

Not a great State of Play but big trailer and release date for FF7 Rebirth, so not bad. Vincent, chocobo racing, it's all in there. February 29, 2024.
