Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

My stream went down during that bit. What exactly did they say?

Does anyone reckon our PSN purchases will transfer onto the PS4? I dont wanna stop playing Street Fighter 3rd Strike... love that game!!

Not sure. They said at first PSN purchases would not transfer over to the PS4 but one of the people at Sony later made this comment:

"We could do so if we choose to," he said. "We know who purchased what as a record. But we are working on service plans and we haven't decided."

They seem undecided about a lot of things. I wish they would just tell us the full details now and leave E3 to discuss the games and how Gakai works.

I know I will eventually get a PS4 but if they dont transfer over my PSN purchases, I will really be annoyed and probably wait a year or two before purchasing it... :(

Interesting.

For the most part I imagine they will want to do the "HD" trick, of getting the developers to upgrade the graphics and then charge for the game as if its new. But at the same time, their biggest strength is the back catalog of PS1, PS2 and PS3 games, as well as the PSP and PSVita.

It's time for Sony to grow up and accept a Steam like system.

I think it'd be a fecking joke if they asked you to pay for them again.

It's not like they can claim a hard copy can be passed from friend to friend to pretend you own the game. You bought the game off the PSN Store and it's in your account. It'd be robbery if they made a new PSN Store and charged you again for the game. It should be a selling point that you can still access your own games.

That would probably also explain Microsoft's uncharacteristic "generosity" with the recent On Demand sales. The feckers are trying to milk very penny before they release their NextBox without any backwards compatibility or recovering your 360 purchase history.

This!

Here's the back of the black one:

And here's the front of the second launch colour with a hint at a great new feature:

Sony ran themselves into a corner with the CELL. Chances of BC are next to none, I think they've already pretty much confirmed it, if I remember correctly. Pretty annoying.

One thing Sony could try is beg/pay developers to port their psn games. As most of the games are out for pc anyway, and ps4 essentially being a pc, one would thing it'll be piss easy to make those games work with ps4? I'm thinking it won't be much of a hassle but I doubt it'll happen.
As for the exclusive stuff like Journey, sony can just port it themselves. But why would they when they can charge you twice for the same shit?

Microsoft allowing Backwards compatibility could be a huge advantage. That plus being cheaper and having kinect, they'll destroy ps4 in the US.

Microsoft will really drop the ball if there is no BC.

Sony have little option with the tech change but nextbox is a pc upgrade for 360.

Without DRM it would run the disk anyway, Practically the same OS. Same backend with Live. A big advantage to have.

Without it I will not upgrade on release day without truly blockbuster exclusive IP (doubtful).

The 360 did not really have BC though did it? I think they had a small amount of games that could be played, and slowly added to that, but then stopped back in 2007. Think only 150 or so original xbox games ended up being able to be played on the 360 in Europe.

Not all that dramatic! You can still keep your PS3 and play your PSN games on the platform you bought them for.

Well I think games with DL through live, Live add ons and arcade games bought really need to be available.

Otherwise I wont be trading up my 360 which in turn will delay my shift over until much further down the line.

Considering the architecture and backend it makes absolute no sense to not do BC.

They will lose a large amount of brand loyalty for the chance of a few rebuys of old games which would have to be heavily discounted in any case.

Plus lose a significant competitive advantage that usually is shouted for a lot more than its actual usage value.

People tend to love the shiny new stuff anyway once they drop.

The 360 used PowerPC CPU whilst the nextbox is rumored to use x86...

Shoe ye with ye common sense!

I think what has become clear to everyone is that the Cell wasn't as good as they told people it was and it has turned out to be a massive failure and waste of money for Sony.

I wouldn't go that far.

I know it's getting tedious hearing this, but I did say it at the start of that generation though, and no doubt it's another thing Weaste has struck from his memory, but we argued a lot over this point. It was always going to be another Emotion Engine, it's as simple as that.

Fair fecks to Sony for trying though, and it's sad in a way this new machine is so limp, but the PS3 plus what they needlessly did with the Vita ultimately cost them and a lot of good people their jobs.

Weaste often wants to slag us off, but they should have listened to us devs after the PS1 and certainly after the PS2. They get enough pressure on them as it is, let alone trying to learn a completely new way of doing something just for one generation, is just was never feasible as much as we all wanted to enjoy the challenge. Now they just pretend they have listened (they still haven't really), in reality they just had no choice to do this machine as it is. It's probably a good thing for their survival that the hardware era is coming to a close!

They have an AMD laptop piece of poop x86 cpu, clocked at the laughable 1.6Ghz. in their ps4. Could be just me, but it seems they don't quite trust their awesome cell creation.

Isn't the NextBox rumored to be clocked at 1.6ghz, albeit with 8 cores?

PS4 rumored to be 3.2ghz with 4 cores.

Apologies Lamb, I didn't mean to draw that post out of you, I was trolling Weaste!

They are compatible unlike cell and ps4. It is more about choice than anything else.

No they are not, it's why prior to 2006 (when Apple switched to x86) you could not install Windows on a Mac and you could not run Mac OS on a PC.

Not at all. Xbox 360 actually runs a modified version of windows and they are easy to port between pc and xbox unlike PS4.

They are not identical but there will not be the same problems getting BC on xbox as they do for PS4.

The OS has nothing to do with it, even if XB360 does or doesn't run a modified Windows Kernal. Somehow you still need to get a 1.6GHz Jaguar CPU to run binary code in the same way as a 3 core dual threaded PPE running at 3.2Ghz. Cell is impossible to emulate.
