Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

So my questions:

1) What disks will it play. Standard Blu-Ray or Dual Layer or something else?
2) Will PS3 Controllers work? That would save me 40/80 quid.
3) Will games be locked to an account. And if so:
- - - a) Will we be able to download them without the disks (Steam)
- - - b) Will we be able to play them on the PS5? Backwards Compatibility forever
4) Will shooters be 4 player split screen again? 4 player split screen online?

I would suspect the PS3 controllers would work, but obviously not for games that use the features of the new ones.

No idea on the security of games.

feck knows on the 4-player split screen. Obviously I think they should, but it's a developer choice.

BTW you mentioned the Cell earlier in the thread, do you actually know it's not in there in some form?

You should have told Sony that, they seem to disagree with you

In my mind they did it for one reason and one reason only.

The Xbox has 'confirmed' it will have 8gb. The PS4 'confirmed' it will have 4gb. Last time they had 256 and Xbox had 512 and they got fecked because of it.

So they upped it to 8gb at the last minute because RAM is very cheap, and they dont want to make the same mistake twice, or give gamers any incentive not to trust them.

256/512mb was low even then. Most PC's had more. 8gb is high now, most PC's have less.

You are wrong about nearly all that.

I've explained in this thread how 4gb of unified could compete with slower 8gb on the MS machine, I also talked about why more memory is always better.

Also you CANNOT just shoehorn more memory into a closed system on a whim because it's cheap, these things aren't designed overnight by some old Weaste type character in a dusty room.

If you think Sony just threw it in there to beable to say "hey look guys, we've got the same amount as MS!" then you are completely and utterly wrong.

Oh and memory isn't the issue on the Sony machines of the past either.

You're really overlooking the whole aspect of how the RAM is used. Doesn't matter how much memory a PC has, consoles don't need as much to play comparable games

rcoobc, if you are so sure Weaste was wrong about the Cell being in the machine, do you have a theory on how it'll run PS3 games?

I'm not trying to catch you out or anything, I'm just asking.

The same way the PSVita is going to run PS4 games it seems. Using that incredible online technology. Or by converting them game by game to run on the PS4.

The latter seems more likely in my opinion.

Oh and for those wondering where Weaste is, he's trying to overcome the emotional stress of realising he's once again behind me

That and the fact this really is a sad day for Sony consoles as it confirms what I said all those years back when the PS3 couldn't batter the 360 in graphical terms. Sooner or later, they had to give in and turn it into a PC. And believe me, that is sad because it means not only has real innovation lost, but we are now WELL behind the curve graphically than we should be by now :(

So you think they are going to stream them cloud style to the PS4, or 'convert' them?

I can assure you, if those are the options the first one would be the one they went for!

I do think they have just said "hey look guys, we've got the same amount as MS!". They havent shown the end product of the PS4 have they? They still have time to work things out. Like you said, they made the decision late, so we're arguing over reasoning.

Of course 4gb fast memory could be better than 8gb slow in some situations. And of course you don't need as much RAM on a console than a PC. BUT the PS3 did run out and it was a big (potential) PR blunder.

They will be streamed from the cloud

Obviously you will need decent broadband speed

The cloud technology terrifies me! The latency on my internet connections is never good.

They mentioned streaming playstation back catalog but the cloud stuff will come in stages, so could be a year after launch

1) Blu-Ray, what ever size developers need to fit games onto.
2) Doubtful, due to the new touchscreen, the move functionality and the removal of start/select.
3) No, http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...gamer-playstation-4-will-not-block-used-games
4) depends on the developer.

As for the point about the memory, the PS4 was always going to use GDDR5 and that would of easily matched against the Nextbox using 8gb DDR3. 8GB of GDDR5 is insane though, do wonder how Sony intends to keep the price down if it's confirmed around the rumored price points.

BTW you mentioned the Cell earlier in the thread, do you actually know it's not in there in some form?

I believe a secondary chip was confirmed, that will handle the background download/upload/share features. No word what it was though.

PlayStation 4 will be built to support 4K resolution output for video but not games, an executive at the company has said.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Joystiq that future PlayStation 4 games will not be available to view in the super-hi-res 4K resolution.

It had been rumoured for several months that Sony - which manufactures a range of 4K televisions - would use PS4 game content as a means to stimulate interest in 4K.

And cost themselves all that money to do so? For PR???

Ridiculous.

You clearly don't know a thing about memory, I like the way you say "of course" when you haven't a clue. And the PS3 ran out? Consoles don't need as much? Myths and miss-truths spouted by fanboys on sites who know feck all.

You know what, I know why you were so quick to try to claim me and Weaste were wrong. Truth is we have been proved far more right than any of your favourite hack sites, and I know this for a fact, and you can see it with your own cloudy eyes. If you don't like Weaste and I talking about this stuff and feeding our knowledge out to you lot, then put us on ignore. We don't have to do it you know, and we come close to causing problems for friends sometimes when we do (hence why I won't be talking about the 720, for a bit at least), but I honestly think it's nice to have this place to talk about it without the usual spastics pretending they know things they don't.

Rumoured to be a Low-power ARM core whatever that is, it also handles the power down standby feature

I can assure you that was always going to be the case.

It's not powerful enough for games at that resolution.

Why do people care about backwards compatability? Just keep your PS3. It hardly takes lond to swap the two around.

I usually only have one console at a time, and even tend to sell the older one because realistically I wont be playing it once the new one comes out. I wouldn't care about backward compatibility because to be honest, you should be playing the new games that are coming out for the new console, and fan favourites such as Fifa and COD will inevitably end up on the PS4.

My gripe is with fighting games. This is one of my favourite genres and it takes time and effort to get good at these types of games. I have bought Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (this game only came out not too long ago) and enjoy it thoroughly but if it wont be played on the PS4, it leaves me with a headache. Do I keep my PS3 just for this one game? Or do I ditch it all together? It a difficult one seen as this, Fifa and Cod are the only games I own and would like to ever own.

For gaming, PC's tend to run 16. 8 is the very least, let alone PC's running less than that.

My gaming PC has 16gb of RAM. No game uses that much, find me one game that does!

Obviously this is because the games "are bottle necked by the PS3 and the Xbox 360" so have to work well with limited resources.

But find me any current game using any settings, that uses more than 3gb of RAM.

Maybe your thinking of recording HD Video whilst gaming?

:wenger: I give up, I really do.

Amazing how many experts we have on here.

Redlambs, these surely aren't in-game footage right, just a Campcom cunjuring trick?

It's difficult to tell from gifs what's real and what isn't, anyone who claims to beable to 100% is a liar.

But no, I doubt those are real in game from that, they look heavily scripted to me.

The motion capture in the second one reminds me of something I once saw where a game was being promoted (I won't say when and where) and the guy was pretending to play along to a pre-rendered scene  The got fecking funding though!

No, I'm thinking about in game performance that struggles with as low RAM as you've mentioned. If I take 8Gb out of my machine and leave 8Gb there, then it stops performing like it did.

:wenger: I give up, I really do.

Do it then! Find me one and I will bow down to your superior knowledge. Or link to anywhere that suggest a current game needs more than that to play. Or explain it yourself.

By the way I'm not talking about the OS + the game. I am talking about the game itself.

Windows 7 says it needs 2GB of RAM, but it runs fine one 1. So find me a game that is bottlenecked in some capacity, by having 4 gb of RAM when running Windows 7 and the game alone.

And yes, consoles need less RAM than PC's. Explain to me how that one is wrong as well.

You are talking crap is what you are.

What do you think memory is used for?

Oh and nice to see you ignore my big post. What is your problem with me being right about what I've said about the PS4? It's not as if I just guessed it all with my big super brain and I'm bestowing my powers onto you mere mortals

Redlambs mate, I appreciate and respect the fact that you can't talk about the 720, but in your opinion will Microsoft alter its technical specs to create a more even playing field with the ps4?

I've no problem with you being right, I like you as a poster!

But I don't understand what your on about with regards to the RAM. You'll literally have to explain to me why a current gen game would need 8gb of RAM to run properly.

And I've just come back from work and had dinner. Give me a break! :)

Now if we are talking about using the RAM to hold temporary files such as level data (either as a ramdisk, or just in RAM) I would be with you!

Soon enough, I'll talk about it all but I'm busy. I have told you about the PS4 memory in this thread though and mention some use for it. Look it up.

And the only problem I have with you is you tried to jump on us right from the start of this reveal, it's as if you want to blame me for it being underwhelming. But that isn't my fault, I want the exact opposite! Oh and I'm a bigger Sony fan than you all might realise, much bigger than Weaste himself

But you can't say I haven't been saying it for years now about the state of the industry and how it's going. This round of consoles is just another step towards all that.

It's not me moaning, it's me hating what the industry I love most is becoming.
