Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

I think we've been treated to some great games, namely The Witcher 3 which is easily in my top three of all time. GTA 5, Inside, Fallout 4 and Uncharted 4 are also brilliant games. We've also had some great indie games.
Yup I think we have been spoilt for choice on games not just this gen but also the 2nd half of the last one

I always have a backlog of games

Yeah, but he's right as in they nothing ground breaking. No AI improvements.

Fallout 4 wasn't even better than Vegas. Uncharted 4 wasn't better than 2. I could go back to 2. But I just can't go back to 4 with all those walking sequences.

Yep it's not been that bad. I've been plenty occupied with both PS4 and One and there's a lot more still to come. Basically every month aside from a couple of Summer/early year months we've had quality blockbusters.

4.2 flops. MS are going to be pissing themselves tonight.

They got a great chance next year especially as the Scorpio will have a UHD player.

Think I might trade my Xbox One in when it comes out. Not going to bother upgrading to the Pro though.

I can't believe people thought there would be little improvement over PS2/Xbox generation, there was plenty of room. It's a valid question, there comes a point where people stop bothering with minimal improvements.

Just because these consoles are weak and offer little improvement, it doesn't change the fact that graphics can always improve.

I mean on a basic level, the last machines (ps4/xbone) couldn't even achieve 1080/60 with anything other than mediocre geometry.

The issue is console gaming is now holding back advancements where it once pushed them.

The Last Of Us was released right at the arse-end of the PS3's life cycle and it looked stunning. I guess a lot of the stuff on PS4 is prettier but not to the point of where I'm shocked or anything.

Diminishing returns and all that.

I'll probably end up getting the PS4 pro as I don't even have a current gen console but it is a little disappointing that it won't play 4K blu-rays. I prefer the PlayStation exclusives and most people I know have PS4s. I'm also considering switching to PC, it seems like there are a lot more benefits to PC than console gaming.

I think Uncharted 4 is phenomenal visually, and is actually a huge step up from anything the PS3 produced.

Yeah, I think MS blindsided Sony with that announcement.

There were rumours that they would upgrade the specs but those are the same specs that we saw early this year. So I am guessing they wanted to rush it out this year.

4k dvd support is an irrelevance this generation.

Next generation when there are hundreds, rather than a handful of available titles, and 4K TVs have more market penetration then we need to start worrying about it.

When all you've to look forward to as an 4K DVD player owner this month is the world of Warcraft movie and the 30year anniversary edition of labyrinth then you aren't missing much.

It would be nice to have it, and a 4K TV, but it's not a deal breaker for me anyway.

Not when I've got 2 pick ups and a new kitchen to pay for anyway.

By next gen then surely people won't still be buying things on physical media?

I used to have a huge DVD library, then a fairly large Blu-Ray library - but can't even think what the last movie I bought on Blu-Ray was. I stream everything now.

Tomb Raider will have three modes for PS4 Pro

- 4K mode, the big resolution and developers made the optimal choices

- 1080p high framerate, the game running at >45 FPS targeting 60

- 1080p bells and whistles, 30 FPS locked with every processing technique pushed to the max

Also having a UHD player is a nice option to have. If MS can get it in their console for £250, why can't Sony when they manufacture the damn things?

That's another thing people keep saying.

It's all about sales and viability. Partially whilst they can milk physical copies they will, but mainly full streaming still isn't 100% viable. Which is why I always referred to these machines as half steps, the cpus alone give the game away.

Full digital and streaming is coming (look at EA's moves), but as of right now it's not something they are pushing and there's still plenty of money in hardware. 4k and VR are things they can push, hence the slightly updated machines to suit.

If it does 1080 with the bells and whistles, but at 30fps, what does 4k look like and at what framerates?

Uh oh, is this the PS1&2/PS3, boom/bust, learn from their mistakes/get too cocky Sony cycle starting again?

Yep - I have to admit I thought I was 100% going to upgrade - but the launch left me pretty underwhelmed. It also subsequently means that the PS5 will be another 'small' upgrade - I miss going from the PS2 to the PS3, and the PS3 to the PS4.

4k and 4k dvd support won't matter for some time atleast until the common people have bought into it and the price is right.. The next next gen will have everything that will be needed but until then VR, HDR and 4k support will be whats what for the next 3-4 years after that upgrade will be available..

They simply haven't got the money to compete again. Scorpio will be more powerful (though still weak) so they are going pre-emptive.

I said on here ages ago that MS can sit back right now and watch the VR race and what's going on. Who'd have thought that was bang on and now they'll push specs to blow Sony out of the water much like Sony did at the start of this gen?

Not that it will matter ultimately, because as we saw with Ps3 vs Xbox and then Ps4 vs Xbone, the games will be tailored to the lowest level machine and most people won't know or care about the difference.

Sony are in a very tough spot here.

Sadly if they weren't so shit at software and development support, the EE and then Cell that they spent fortunes on would be the standards of consoles by now and we'd be further on.

Now we get laptops (amd ones, no less) in bigger boxes. Our next upgrades are basically overclocks. It's sad :(

What the hell?

This makes no sense as not everybody has the same setup on PC also.

Hopefully MS are not this stupid.

4K isn't even that big of a deal itself. HDR is the real upgrade.

PS2 to 3 yeah but the 3 to 4 being the underpowered turd it was led to this mess.

an underpowered turd that was selling like hot cakes

Nobody was really looking for the Ps4 pro

They should have left it as is selling well and brought out a fully backwards compat Ps5 in 2018/19

So, essentially it's not really worth it. Especially if you don't actually have anything capable of 4K?

Or if you're a framerate sage. I think after watching this the next big tech purchase I'll be getting will be a new TV to take advantage of those sweet HDR capabilities we'll all be getting. My Panasonic Plasma is nearly 10 years old now so it's probably time for an upgrade, beyond that possibly PS VR. I'm quite happy with the console I've got at the minute.

Actually I'd say if you aren't looking for 4K, it might still be worth it. If you have 4K media content, you should get a Xbox One S

Seems a meaningless and unnecessary upgrade for people who aren't hardcore nerds about their tech. Think I'll just stick with the reg PS4.

I've been very unimpressed with the games this generation anyway. The only ones I've genuinely enjoyed have been Bloodborne, The last of us remastered (previous gen) and I enjoyed replaying the FFX remaster (two fecking generations back).

And Don't tell me to play the Witcher 3, it wasn't for me.

Same here really, I buy stuff that I will really watch over and over again, where as before, certainly before Netflix was a thing,,I would buy everything I had even the slightest interest in.

I was pushing a thousand DVDs/ Blurays at one point, it was silly.

I think I'll stick to what I have in that case. Having just blown my load on a new pc, without a 4K I would essentially be paying another £300 for slightly better performance from games like Uncharted (which would not be a bad thing, but something I could live without).

Uh? It makes complete sense - Sony don't want their Pro users to have an advantage over the 40 million PS4 consoles already sold. Not rocket science mate? If they did give an advantage their would be uproar. Consoles aren't PC's...

Was beginning to think I was the only one, had such high hopes when people said its better than Bloodborne.
Count me in as well. Tried Witcher 3 but couldn't warm to it. I can see why people like it, but not for me.

Anyway on topic I'll be buying the Slim - the Pro looks nice but...

1) not playing 4K blu rays is a missed opportunity
2) the power usage (350W) is mad - double the normal Ps4
3) I imagine this will be louder than a normal PS4
4) I don't have a 4K TV and no intention to buy one either - too expensive still for me.

Got a 1TB Slim on pre order :D

So people buy an expensive new console that gets bottlenecked. Lovely.

Kinda seems a bit pointless in that case, doesn't it?
