Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

Regarding the Drive club devs releasing a lot of staff, that is somewhat normal. It's part of the design cycle. They hire staff as they ramp up development, and release them once the game is finished, rinse and repeat. I'm assuming some of these layoffs are due to that and the poor state the game launched in. I thinks it's this late after the game released due to the state it released in and the cleanup they had to do...

Of course some will use this to paint whatever picture that fits their pov but thats my interpretation based off what normally happens.

Maybe @Redlambs could fill us in.

Just seems strange removing half your staff and then saying DRIVECLUB will be some sort of service. I understand if they get rid of 10 to 12 members. But 55 is quite a lot and just seems like Evolution have no other projects in the pipeline. No sequel or any other game.

I just have a feeling they will make DLC for the next year and will be closed down sadly. Hope I am wrong.

If that was the case wouldn't they just contract people for temporary periods though anyway?

Arkham Knight has been delayed by three weeks. So will be coming out on the 23rd June.

No, Afro is largely wrong there.

You will get sound guys and artists on freelance and short term contracts if need be, but these are layoffs.

It's a shit industry to be in at the best of times, why the feck would anyone do it if they are getting laid off at the end of each project??

So... I just sold my PS3 and about 30 games (that I finished over 5 years - I'm not kidding) to get a PS4 for no money really...

What games should I buy? I only have PS+ games and the last of us right now.

Anybody?

I did the same thing yesterday but the only games to look forward to are Mortal Kombat 10 next month and then Batman Arkham Knight in June. I'm pissed that Uncharted 4 is delayed till 2016. I'm playing Last of Us remastered now and its brilliant on PS4 even though I finished it on PS3.

I'll get both of those, but am looking for something to play for now. I haven't played too many of the latest PS3 games either.

@Redlambs any suggestions?

Come on lads there have to be many people with a PS4.

Not really mate, there's not a lot on it at all that even remotely interests me. I'm not getting one until there is.

Ok, I thought it was the contracts ending, didn't realise it was permanent staff... it's what I've been told and it made sense that you don't need a large team once a game was completed so I just repeated it here. I stand corrected... but what I mentioned is how it normally works right?

It is more and more becoming that way sadly, but no, what you are talking about is a more recent invention designed to cut costs and strangle developers budget-wise.

The only thing about this I'd describe as the 'normal way', is the fact that once again the powers that be fecked the budgets and development times and the creative suffer.

It's the way of a lot of industries nowadays... contractor myself, but by choice at the moment.

True, but you can't have a team pump out quality games like that. It's not a practice that is used that often yet, but it will be.
I can imagine... no attachment, no rapport, no streamlined system honed by years of working together... lot cheaper tho

It would be far cheaper just not to have all the directors, producers and support staff that make up the bulk of the bloated teams.

But that's not the thinking sadly :( Now the best guys end up leaving the industry to be replaced with grads who haven't been taught properly. Sad but true.

As soon as games became somewhat mainstream and a multi-billion dollar industry the writing was on the wall... it's always the way. You can see it manifesting in so many ways from the cookie cutter game design to the lack of risk taking... we have indies tho so it's not quite 'the end is nigh'...

Where's your Spark Project?

Just seen the gaf thread, a percentage of the 50+ layoffs to be kept on as contractors.... :/

Does look/sound like they will wind down and close...

I haven't actually played many games, since I'm waiting until summer to finish with school, but I'm following the reviews & talking with my friends, so I have an idea of what is going on.

I'd say:

- Shadow of Mordor (I've actually played this for a few hours, and it's an extremely entertaining game)
- Assassins Creed: Black Flag (it's suppose to be the best AC game ; don't mix it up with Unity!)
- Dying Light (2 friends have said it's in their top10 of all time, looks fun)
- FIFA / PES / NBA 2k15 (if you're into sports games)
- Dragon Age: Inquisition (my brother who hates RPGs, absolutely loved this game)
- Bloodborne (not your usual game, it's very difficult)
- GTA5

Mortal Kombat X, Witcher, & Batman are also coming soon.

That's a very good list. I'd add FarCry 4 if you can get it on the cheap and NBA 2K15 (or 2K14 for peanuts), both very good games as well. The list above is probably north of 300 hours of gaming easily!

Dying Light is a game that doesn't get mentioned a lot in this talk but it's really good. It's a comfortable 8/10 title for me, I'm almost finished with it but will keep it as I can see myself playing it over again in the future.

I've decided I'm going to get Bloodborne. I need to learn to play games.

Anyone willing to shareplay MLB with me sometime please?

Seems they don't have a demo and I'm really interested in getting it. Though, I'd have to get 15 as 14 goes offline soon (even though I probably wouldn't play online anyway).

I'll share play it with you when I get it, mines coming via import.

15 I mean, I sold 14 already to pay for it.

I sold my PS4 because it had very little on it that I couldn't already play on PC. The best game I played on PS4 was Resogun - Definitely worth picking up for £7 or whatever it is.

As for the exclusives, meh...

Those are some cruel recommendations.

Shadow of Mordor is an ugly brown mess with shallow combat & a bland world.
Black Flag spends too much time of the land with the typical lackluster gameplay the franchise is known for.
(Dying Light I haven't played)
Fifa 15 STILL doesn't have indoor stadiums like the PS1 games did (can't remember if it was Fifa 97 or WC98, but I played the hell outta the indoor stadiums).
Dragon Age is a mediocre RPG packed with MMO style side content that just illustrates how far Bioware have fallen from their glory days.
Bloodborne isn't out yet in the UK, sadly.
GTA5 is... Well, it's GTA. You either love it or hate it.

Resogun
Transistor
FEZ
Rogue Legacy
Shovel Knight is an absolute must when it comes out

I know they're all indie titles, but the AAA releases on both the big consoles so far have been uninspiring to say the least. Transistor has a better aesthetic and OST than any AAA game on the PS4.

FIFA will never have indoor stadiums again, no point creating them when actual football is played exclusively outdoor by recognized clubs. It was a gimmick on first PlayStation, it was nice to have but they have FIFA Street for that nowadays. Not sure how it'd work with proper FIFA's engine either, probably not too well.

Not sure it's possible to dislike GTA much. Obviously it might not be everyone's cup of tea but majority of people are going to enjoy it very much, with online developed to the extent it is right now, a good storyline and extensive city to explore it's a cracking game.

Bloodborne will be out in the UK in two days. Surely he can wait?

You don't need a PS4 to play any of these. Transistor is out on PC and will probably run on any computer, Resogun, FEZ and Rogue Legacy are out on PS3 and they're not much on the graphics side so they basically look exactly the same (unlike multiplatform games mentioned in the post above which look and run far better on new gen).

All those games besides Resogun are on PC.

I would recommend Geometry wars, Helldivers, GTA, Dragon Age and Far Cry. Dying light is good with friends. And of course Bloodborne judging by what people are saying even though I haven't played it.

But yeah a lot of the games are basically more of the same and nothing new. But there's not much else besides remasters.

Aye, most of the interesting games are remasters. If it weren't for power difference between PS3 and PS4 there'd be very little reason to buy the latter at the minute. I like my games crisp and with a good framerate and I'm quite happy with my PS4 but the fact that it has very few good games that are strictly new gen cannot really be overlooked. Though GTA for instance is a much superior game on a PS4 for me, likewise FIFA/PES etc. It's difficult to play them again on a PS3 after having a longish run on a PS4.

You know something's terribly off with the new generation when Sleeping Dogs is getting remastered. Not that it's a bad game, it's just on the sort of classic GTA5 and Last of Us are that'd make it a reasonable choice for a remaster. Seeing as it was up for €10 on PS Store lately I imagine that's what a lot of people must have thought as well.

Ok so I've already played Dragon age, Fifa, 2k15, Shadow of Mordor and Black flag on my xbox. I might have GTA lying around too. Kinda put me off buying a new console tbh . Maybe just wait till the new batman and final fantasy is out then buy it?

I do wonder if both companies decided to take out BC on purpose due to this remaster fad.

I can understand some remasters like GTA. Some people would have missed out on it as it launched at the same time as the new consoles. Or Halo with the multiplayer for the older games.

But why does a game like sleeping dogs need a remaster? Everyone who wanted to play it would have done and it has been given away with games on gold and ps plus. Same goes for Batman as I am pretty sure that was on ps plus.

At the moment exclusive wise besides the remasters, next gen looks pretty weak. The best games on there are the ones I played last gen like Last of us, GTA and Halo. And next week Dark Souls 2 will be added to that list.

Best three exclusives have been Bloodborne, Sunset and Forza Horizon.

Games like Watchdogs and Destiny despite the hype didn't impress me. But both those games also could be played on the 360 and PS3.

Need more games that are next gen only especially from third party. There seems to be no new IPs from third party studios. The two I mentioned above could be played on the older consoles, so they don't count for me. You go back to last gen and you got Mass Effect, Gears, Bioshock, Saints Row, Assassins creed, Dead Rising, Just Cause and a few others I forgotten. Nobody seems to want to take a risk.

But like I said many times before it's been a poor start. It wasn't this bad at the start of last gen.

GTA is better on new gen and if you play online I'd definitely recommend buy it. FIFA's also better so you'd probably need to get that too, no reason to buy Dragon Age or Shadow of Mordor if you'd already completed it.

What you get with the new gen is mostly more power. There aren't many games you get on a PS4 that you cannot get for past gen. DriveClub is a good racing game but you've already had better on 360, The Order is somewhat underwhelming and pretty short to justify purchasing a system and Bloodborne isn't everyone's cup of tea. I'd say it's worth to get it because of superior technical side of new games but if you're into exclusives and new stuff you might be left a bit disappointed. I don't regret buying PS4 at launch, I've spent hundreds of hours with it.

Exactly. Sleeping Dogs doesn't even run much better on new gen and it came out in 2012, long before the new generation came up. If someone wanted to play it, they would have done so on a PS3/360. GTA was a good remaster even though I've finished it on a PS3, it's the sort of game you keep coming back to even after several months from purchase and I'll probably still be playing it online (and offline) in 2 years. Last of Us too, it's a classic and deserves to be played over more than once. I've also got Tomb Raider remaster for €12 and I'm happy with it even though I didn't consider it necessary, Resident Evil is another remaster that's probably worth a purchase.

Forza Horizon 2 was my reason to get Xbox One and I don't regret it a bit. I'm yet to play Sunset Overdrive even though it's been lying on my HDD for 3 months but from what I've seen I'm probably going to like it.

Yeah I think most people would get decent value out of a game system eventually. I'm a bit odd in that i've never played a console game online ( at home anyways) plus a xbox game costs about a pound or two which is one of the reasons I have hundreds of games in my collection. Don't wanna switch without at least a flagship title i can't wait to get into. Pretty excited about Bloodborne although I haven't played Dark Souls 2 yet either.

Past gen games are indeed much cheaper than new gen games, the difference justified by varied quality.

I'm actually curious whether I'll go back at some point to complete all the backlog on PS3. I've not touched any of it for a year so I doubt it very much.

I just can't go back to the PS3 because of how long it takes to download patches and I got 150meg internet. It takes too long and I get bored. 360 was flawless in that aspect.

I will go back to it no doubt when Yakuza 5 is on the PSN store.

Anyone rate The Evil Within? , liked the look of it when it came out and just kinda forgot about it and it's around £20-25 now, worth it?

It got battered all over the place here, apparently a very shit game all over.
