Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

Was a joke Weaste.

There are images floating around showing 1 day, 3 day and week long rentals for individual games

Yeah I saw those. But I assumed they were just an alternative scheme where you rent instead of buy. Didn't think it was tied to PS Now streaming?

It's getting both! The price drop is a strategic move, so no, they don't need to do it, but they are doing it in an attempt to put the Xbox One to bed.

Really? A price cut would surprise me, a lot.

Xbox won't be going anyway, and I hope it doesn't either. Sony need the competition to stay ahead of the game and not get complacent I feel, so far this generation they've knocked it out of the park on the whole so I don't want that to let up which is more likely to happen when you don't have a competitor.

People say this all of the time, but the whole point of competition is to produce a winner and a loser, then the loser might just come back with something competitiive. United is a classic example of this, we now need to do something to compete again. The fact that we got such a bloody nose this year isn't a bad thing. Companies enter competitive markets to win as it makes more money. Microsoft have already lost the competition with the hardware, PS4 is currently profitable as hardware and can be cut in price, Xbox One is currently, even without Kinect, more expensive to make due in part to the eSRAM (that's their fault due to design decisions that they made). If Microsoft want to stay in the competition the onus is on them to provide compelling software and services as a balance against their hardware disadvantage. It's the responsibility of the Sony executives to make as much money as possible for their shareholders, and if Microsoft and Nintendo can both be put into coffins, then all the better. Would it be good for consumers for that to happen? Probably not, but it's the consumers at the end of the day that decide the winner of a product competition when they make the decision to buy one over the other.

I'd imagine 1080p will be the standard resolution on PS4 (you could argue it's that already), though developers might still favour 30fps in games where they want to have more dazzling mindblowing effects going on in game types where 60 isn't essential. I don't mind that as long as the concessions in fps are justified by the graphics/effects on screen and the game is the better for it.

Don't expect the big massive games to go for 60fps unless they are FPS with the philosophy of that being important. The next Uncharted for example will be 1080p but not 60fps. Many PC gamers can't guarantee a constant 60fps with modern games unless they own seriously expensive rigs. Most games will be 1080p (only two this far are not - Battlefield and Watchdogs, but you could argue that they were not properly optimised and cross-generational in nature). What we hopefully will see with the PS4 going forward is a lot more use of GPU compute.

So batman arkham knight has slipped to 2015! The number of games that have been delayed is annoying.

Would have thought they'd want to get that game into stores pre xmas...

As mentioned in the Arkham Knight thread im ok with the delay, October was gonna be mental for games releases anyway, Alien Isolation, Driveclub, Evolve and The Evil Within are games I'm definitley gonna get, also in two minds wether to try out Dragon Age: Inquisition, then on top of that you have Destiny (Septemebr), a new NBA 2K game, new COD, Project CARS and possibly new Battlefield & Assassins Creed in Novmeber.

I get that someone wins and someone loses. What I'm saying is I don't want to the Xbox One to go away any time soon, thats all.

I realise Sony are out to make money, I'm not that naive. However, over the past year they really have struck a cord with us - the gamers. I want that to continue and I don't think that would have even happened had the Xbox 360 been so successful. That was the point I was trying to make.

So are much are Sony making on console now then? I thought they'd only just started to make money on them now which is why I was surprised to hear you say a price cut is coming.

I would like to some some games going for 60 fps though, in some cases I'd take an IQ hit just to get steady 60. In some cases... like the new MK for example. Or even the next BF...

Surely there won't be another Assassins Creed game before Christmas this year?

I agree with your point though. It's good for games to be spread out across the calendar year, though there'll always be a bit of a pre-Christmas rush. Another factor is that FIFA will be out around October too. I assume developers try to avoid launches in the same week as FIFA generally.

No official release date on Assassin's Creed Unity, but it is expected Q4 2014.

Aye thats another one to add to the list, though this year im gonna see what pro evo is like as I'm fed up with FIFA and all the bullshit that comes with it each year, hopefully Konami have put the extra year they've had to develop a next gen football game to good use & will have a crack at changing the status quo in football games at the minute.

I thought they were going to announce Destiny beta at E3 on PS4 but this seems more likely since Activision said the beta was July in their conference calls with shareholders.

Media Molecule have tweeted they aren't showing anything at E3 Weaste like you said..? Or are they messing with us?

I don't usually double dip at full price on release but I might have to make an exception if its that soon, I really want to play through it again and try the DLC.

The Walking Dead 1 & 2 is coming too, yet to play them, was waiting for the steam sales but if I can get them relatively cheap on PS4 then its a bonus.

I'll still be plodding through watchdogs and haven't played tlou yet, so I will wait till I'm completely finished with watchdogs first.

How long till TLOU comes down to £20/30 do people reckon? Can't justify paying £50 on another game at the moment.

It won't be £50, not online anyway. Can pre-order it right now for £38 I think but I reckon it might be gettable for less, I guess we wait on release date and pricing at E3. I very much doubt it will be full retail price though.

Oh, also, why aren't our free ps plus games free yet? Noticed trine 2 was up for money lat night?

Think they are changing the games on the 4th June.

For the future, this is from their blog:

Since we’ve seen how excited many of you are to download Instant Game Collection titles as soon as they’re available, we’ve decided to adjust the length of time each title will be available. Starting in July, every title in the Instant Game Collection will be available the first Wednesday of the month, and will be free for that month, until the first Wednesday of the following month.

5? Trine and NBA aren't on Vita so that makes it 4 :)
