Players you had forgotten existed

Just checked on Gael Kakuta. Playing for a team fighting relegation in the Turkish second tier after a stint in the Persian gulf league.

Incidentally Yeni Malatyaspor are having a rough time of it in his league. A 21 point deduction leaves them with -21 points after 29 games following a torrid 29 game loss streak with -92 GD.

Saidy Janko and Guillermo Varela. Looking at Transfermarkt and they've both had decent careers since leaving United.

Juan Mata still plays. He was coming on as sub today for Western Sydney.

Got to say that A league is very watchable. Lots of chances. Free flowing football. Fair play. Good fans.

Gaizka Mendieta. I was watching on YT that famous thrashing of Utd by Boro in 2005 and Mendieta was their key player in that match. Mendieta was world class and one of the best midfielders during his prime in Valencia in early 2000s. However, he was never the same player after he left Valencia, though he showed the flashes of brilliance when he played for Middlesborough.

For whatever reason the two I seem to remember the most are

Darren Anderton - 1st time i ever heard the term "sicknote"

and

Thomas Gravesen - thought it would only happen once that someone would play for both Everton and Real Madrid. Then along came James Rodriguez...

Can only laugh at the idea that a team with no wins, no points and no chance of doing anything were given such a points deduction.

Umtiti

Bojinov retired this year.

Bianchi, Italian striker from City's Elano-Petrov-Ireland years.

Good one, only 31 years old. Didn't know he joined Lille in summer 2023. To be fair he barely played for them at all, his injury record is horrendous.
France must have thought they could rely on their 2018 WC CB pairing for another ten years. Umtiti was already finished at 25 and Varane retired at 29.

Read an interview with him where that World Cup basically wrecked his career long term as he took quite a lot of injections going into it.

The following season, he constantly had issues with his knee and numerous surgeries, never really recovered - but suppose he won the World Cup.

Remember that bloke that played for that team? You know, the one who played in that position and did that thing? He wore boots and shorts and he was around 7 inches either side of 6ft tall... you know the one.
Dennis Wise ?

Luis Garcia retired. So not relevant since you can pick out any retired player from yesteryear ie: Wes Brown

Bro seriously come on here and said Wes Brown is forgettable?
Ain’t no one on here ever forgetting Wesley Chap.

Jose Paolo Guerrero. Former Bayern and Hamburg striker. Scored for Peru last weekend. He's 41 now! Played 80 minutes too.

Alexander Büttner now into his third spell at Vitesse. Seems to have had a decent career up to this point with over 350 league appearances.

Thought he was likeable, if limited player for us. Also won a PL medal.

Forgettable. Garcia brought the world joy with the ghost goal against Chelsea which was Unforgettable. Point was having a dig on retired players is a little snarky.

Joy?… Blimey, you are the only one here who got joy from that game/goal

Wes Brown is a far bigger cult hero with us than Garcia is with your mob btw

Still remember Evra's face watching Buttner's debut from the bench.

Powell scored on his debut in that game too, right?

Buttner also scored in that random 5-5 against WBA that was SAF's last game in charge.
Yes. 4-0 against Wigan. I was so excited and confident SAF is building a dominant force for another decade. 90s team, 00s team, 10s. Didn’t happen. I think SAF ability to make players great is underappreciated. His main strength was guiding people to realization of their potential.

Absolutely. That’s why he’s the greatest manager in the history of football.

Dani Pacheco, ex-Liverpool youngster who was hyped up at one point. Now 34 years old and playing at Wisla Plock in the Polish 2nd division. Looks like he spent the bulk of his career in the Spanish 2nd tier, winning it twice.

Reminded of him when playing Football Manager and the game invented a new player with the same last name.

I think Powell had talent and he could have played at the top level. He just joined the club at the wrong time with SAF already in his last season.
