Philippe Coutinho Barcelona Player

Never found him to be consistent or injury free enough to be worth such a vast sum. Crazy market we're in.

Liverpool have done well. If they re-invest it wisely from now until the beginning of next season, I think they will challenge ourselves and City for the title.

Take out the Neymar money/Neymar transfer effect, and Barca would basically have spent around 100M-120M to buy in Coutinho and Dembele, which would have been around the sort of expense you'd get in the current market. As soon as oil money lifts fees for certain players, it will have a knock-on effect on already large fees. Why else have Liverpool just spent 75M on a CB that would normally expect to go for, say, 40M nowadays?

As for the signing himself, very happy. Barca needed to replenish and rebuild the creative base of the team, this will simultaneously take a huge amount of the workload off Messi, and free up Messi to do more work near the goal rather than simply carry the attacking building on his back.
Well they pissed off Southampton for a start. If they hadn't publicly tapped van Dijk up they would have got him for 15M cheaper.

haha, do not be so spoilt . Papá Florentino will also buy Dybala if it's what you want.
Tito better get me Kane, Dybala and Hazard

Or Neymar. I'll be happy enough with just Neymar

I just can't believe these sums anymore. Actually, forgot the number and consider value.

Who did we replace Ronaldo with?
Michael Owen, Gabriel Obertan, Bebe, I guess Valencia if we shift some dates

Does that equate to £142 million in today's market? Nope. Nuts

They could've had Coutinho, Suarez and Sterling frontline. Scary prospect, but then again, they made huge profit from those, so owners must be chuffed.

Salah has more or less replaced the loss of Suarez and Mane/Firminho have made up for the loss of Sterling. Losing Coutinho however will be hard to replace.

Decent enough deal for Liverpool, they've got other players in the squad and Countinho has become less important. It'll be interesting to see where they put that money.

Suarez was an absolute monster, as good as Salah is, I'd have Suarez over him any day. Sterling, yeah, Mane is more than good enough to replace him. How they replace Coutinho remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, they have the money to do it.

Insane amount, in no way shape or fashion is Coutinho worth that much. Still the positive is that Liverpool have weakened the starting 11 but the negative is they now have a stupid amount of money to invest.

Coutinho is world class. At Barca he’ll only up his game on a more consistent basis where people will realize this and was the case with Suarez when he went there. He’ll definitely flourish there and take the next step in his career.

I just checked our league position finishes with Coutinho. He helped us to 2nd in that Suarez season and 4th last season. Apart from that we finished 7th, 6th and 8th. No silverware despite getting to some finals.

He's arguably peaked this season and is playing some wonderful stuff. But then so had Vardy and Mahrez under tinker man but they did enough to get their team the golden fleece. It's all relative innit.

Ronaldo, Bale, Neymar were the main culprits. Ronaldo was 8 years before Pogba and Bale about 5 years. So on football inflation Pogba was cheaper than both of them.
Ronaldo was an absolute baragin at the time even at that best player in the world and one of the best ever. Bale was nowhere near that level when he left for Real and only a combination of Levy and Reals then love of Galacticos made that fee so high. Neymar’s fee was just ridiculous and mind-boggling no matter how you look at it, but he had at least proven more than Dembele and Mbappe who cost ridiculous amounts.

I don't know why the scouse are getting upset, he's a good player but not world class, that sum of money is crazy for him. Very good business for them.

Weird transfer time. Barcelona can't use him in the CL. If they had him for the CL, I'd pick them to win it. I suppose it allows them to rest Iniesta even more for the CL.

Liverpool have done well. Just depends how they use that money.
Keita and Van Dijk is how they’ve already used the money.

Scouse should be upset because they won’t be able to replace him. Good deal business wise, but this has just made Liverpool weaker in the short term at least.

Did Barcelona do that in August? :wenger:

Yes. The instagram bit was just after his post on the 8th August too.

Think a large number of them thought he'd be different from Torres, Suarez, Alonso etc and want to stay. He signed a new contract in January last year and said this:

“I am very happy to sign a new contract here. It is a club that I am very grateful to and this shows my happiness here. I will work much harder to repay the belief shown in me.

“I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it’s a great honour for me. It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms by everyone at the club and the supporters right from my first day. I am very thankful to this football club for everything.
and they believed him. He didn't even make 12 months :D Then in the summer (and the past week) he pretended to be injured to miss games.

£140M for Coutinho is fantastic business for Liverpool. It basically puts De Bruyne out of reach for any club so that’s the big plus for me, but if they get to invest this over and above what they’ve already spent on Van Dijk and Keita then they could be a real player next year. We’ll see.

If the player is keen, they would get him though . But I think KDB is very happy at city.

On one side he has been a couple of years accepting a secondary role and seeing that Modric is getting older and Kroos playing under his usual level he could stay to be finally protagonist, but on the other hand Zidane has barely used him and when he did It was to run behind Messi, therefore he could ask for an exit and Zidane could accept it(although in the past Madrid rejected similar offers).
Is there some rumor or its only your personal preference?
The handkerchief cnuts love United,of course we want to talk.Let's invite Rashford to the talks too

No rumours, I just think that he would be ideal as our third midfielder together with Pogba and Matic.

Rashford is going nowhere, he'll be our Raul

Do they ? Look at what they spent on Ox and Van Dyke

Trust me I hope they are skint but Id imagine that they probably could have bought Oxlaide Chamberlain regardless but hopefully the majority already was spent on Van Dijk.

Coutinho was supposed to be sold in the summer and van dyke was supposed to be bought in the summer. Both transfers were delayed and both players threw a strop at their respective clubs. It is obvious that Liverpool have spent some of the Coutinho money on VVD.

Like you wouldn't be doing backflips if we lost De Gea.

What? I wouldn't. He is an amazing keeper that I enjoy watching except when he is playing Chelsea. I love seeing the top English teams at the top of their game as it increases the strength and prowess of the league as a whole, in fact I realized I didn't appreciate the mid-late 00's era when all the top English teams were amongst the best in Europe. To me it just seems petty and a little strange to wish upon the best players leaving the league if they don't play for your team.

He is a top talent, up there with the best the scousers have mustered over recent history - Fowler, Owen, Torres, Gerrard and Suarez - I think he's in that bracket somewhere.

But £142m is an eye watering amount of money! Our £89m for Pogba (an inherently more "marketable" player as well probably) is starting to look like a right bargain!!

To state an incredibly obvious point - you could buy 2 £70m players for that price, which would have been the 4th highest transfers in history 18 months ago.
