This signing seems odd given that Rio and Vidic still has a few good years ahead, and backups with Smalling and Evans. I mean, he is a good talent, but not an immediate need. Unless we are planning to get Modric with Evans as part exchange, since Spurs are in need of a centreback, i don't think Phil Jones deal is that necessary.

That rationale was fair enough until we heard about the likely departure of

O'Shea
Brown

While Brown didn't play much this season, he still made 15 appearances in all comps, so not bad. O'Shea I don't think I need to explain.

Jones looks an important buy now, and if it were up to me, I'd even go ahead with the supposed talks with Varane now(though some might say, Jones coming in, has put an end to that).

true but i think fergei thinks jones is too good to not to be signed. if we did not bid for him, he could end up with arsenal or liverpool.

this situation is quite similar to the one we had with rooney a few years ago. we end up bidding for him after newcastle and chelsea declared their interest in rooney. fergei need to make that move at that time.

I think it is perfectly logical to stock up on central defenders. Based on my admittedly fleeting observation, CB is the one position in which players have disproportionately high injury rates compared to other positions. It may have to do with the fact that they have to make awkward last ditch lunges for the ball or that they are faced with smaller nippy players while they are generally taller with higher centre of gravity. Most of the sick-notes tend to be CB. Look at Dawson, King, Rio, Vermalen (sp) etc... It is the put their bodies on the line situations come up more often for them. So having spare CB's esxpecially as this is such a key position is vital. In short, yes to Phil Jones. :)

I'm telling you this guy's going to be a beast of a signing.

Think of this initial fee as security from OTHER clubs signing him, that's all it was. Wenger wanting to spend that much, and most probably break the club's record transfer for him speaks volumes of how highly he's rated at the top.

I do agree cesc, I've watched Jones many times and at first, if you didn't know his age you'd say he was around 24 at the peak of his physique and was a freakin' moster at times...

Then the commentators say 19, and you go wow !

He's definitely better than smalling and 16m is reasonable compared to 12m for Smalling...

Thx... SAF

Sorry... But at times you really do have to feel for Le'Arse... The fans do not deserve 1m signings...
They'll spend some money on a new central defender themselves. I have no problem with us buying someone for £1m, it's not like he's going to be Arsenal's big signing for the summer either.

10yr plan my Arse... If he doesn't spend more than 20m this season and still doesn't win anything... Arsene is as good as gone.

That signing was done weeks ago. It was just officially confirmed and went through - he's just a young FB we've been scouting for a while. It's definitely NOT going to make or break our summer.

Yes... But imagine Mr.Arsene thinks thats enough... Like Squillachi was enough.... etc..

His back four is by far the worse in the top four... Djourou is a total joke in my honest opinion and they have too asses how Vermalen heals etc...

If you don't get 2 quality CB's, I don't think it will be easy for Le'Arse to push up the rankings again.

Have we signed him yet? Or are we waiting to sign him after the U21 championship?

Not that this is the right thread for it, but Djourou was tremendous for the most part of the season. Though for whatever reason his form dipped after he came back from a few weeks lay-off with a shoulder. I don't know where he stands ATM, but he can play midfield too so I think he's a very good option to have in the squad. You have to keep in mind he's missed years of development time thanks to injuries, so is still catching up compared to other 24 year old international CB's.

Vermaelen is obviously our best defender. He's just a class act all-round, though he's not huge by any means and can be monstered by the big power-forwards. Djourour and Kos are quite similar in their key attributes, all three are quite classy defenders but none are the big gorilla defenders ala Vidic, that you need to complement each other's games.

We need a big defender with PL experience to come in, someone like Samba would be ideal. He just needs to attack the ball and marshal defences like Campbell used to, and allow Vermaelen/Kos/Djourou to mop up.

The Squid's a bit of a joke, his promising start didn't translate into anything when we needed it. Still, he was never going to be our first choice, and was unfortunately thrust into the limelight thanks to injuries to Vermaelen, Djourour and Kos throughout the season. Obviously Wenger wasn't planning on using him as much as he had to, but that's just how it goes sometimes.

As for signings. I expect there to be a fair bit of player movement this season. Both Denilson and Bendtner will be shipped out, which should fetch us a tidy sum. And it also means we'll need to sign at least another midfielder and a forward - I hope.

This piece is from Eirik Aase from the Norwegian Blackburn Supporters Club, Google translated from Norwegian. Decent work by Google I might add.
Some interesting stuff here, particularly the playing in midfield bit.

Eirik Aase from Blackburn's Norwegian supporter told united.no that he is sure that Phil Jones will be a dream signing for United's part, and understand teen decision to change club.

The formal still remains, but there are very strong indications that Jones will play Manchester United in the near future. Central defender or midfielder if you will, is said to have been at Old Trafford today to conduct medical check that makes him a Red Devil. Jones has already become a fan favorite at Ewood Park, which he has been ever since his debut against Chelsea in March 2010.

- Ever since the league debut of Jones, who was against Chelsea, he is only impressed more and more for every game. He plays with heart outside of the shirt and with great authority. In the aforementioned game against Chelsea as he had no problem with staying away from Drogba, and was not surprised voted man of the match, "says Aase to united.no.

- The reason that Jones has such a high status among Rovers fans are a mix of his incredible talent, his hard working style of play and of course, his local affiliation. Jones comes from Chorley close to Blackburn, and has always been a big Rovers supporter.

Aase fear that Blackburn would be a Championship club if Jones did not deliver solid stopping games with Chris Samba, Ryan Nelsen absence due to injury. He thinks Jones is a better replacement for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic than, for example, Chris Smalling is, and believes the youngster will break through at United.

- Definitely! He has played well over 40 appearances for Rovers now, and I have his hand on the heart to admit that I have only seen him make a serious mistake once. It was late this season in a game against Everton where he made an obvious penalty, "says Aase.

- Although Chris Smalling has proven to be very promising in the red shirt, so I have no doubt that both current level and potential level of Jones is higher than its Smalling. There should be a very good indication of how good he is.

Many of the players who have left Blackburn for the benefit of better clubs have not got it with his new employer. Aase, however, certain that Jones will be no failure of purchase for United.

- With Jones' efforts, skills and leadership, I am sure he does not go into the same trap, but his hand is going to establish himself both as a successor to Ferdinand and England's future captain.

Jones has figured in both center-back position, central midfield for Rovers. If they ask what position Jones will work best, Aase is crystal clear.

- There is no doubt that he is best as stops. It was terribly annoying to see him be used in midfield, but as long as both Nelsen and Samba played well together on stopping place, combined with a lack of defensive players in midfield, it was probably still a smart choice by Allardyce.

- One thing that is wonderful with Jones is his leadership skills. Even when he was 18 and had not played so long at the top level, he had no problems excoriated fellow players if they were lazy or did not do its job, something especially Gamst and Kalinic has repeatedly experienced.

Now watch Jones' era in the Blackburn's time to be over. It is a sad day for Rovers fans, who have lost one of their biggest favorites. Yet Aase no trouble understanding 19-year-old's decision to shift grazing.

- Personally I would have preferred that Jones chose to be one or two years in the Rovers, where he had been assured fixed games, but considering the solid earnings jumped he's going to do, it is easy to see how a 19 year old boy chooses to come to one of the world's biggest football clubs.

I'm 99.9% certain we'll be seeing pics of him in a Utd shirt holding a scarf beside the Tower of Gill by lunchtime.

Forgot about the u21s

For those asking re Phil Jones #MUFC deal, he's just arrived at England U21 camp and he's in high spirits
about 10 hours ago

Still, absolutely certain of signing him

I'd be really sad if we sell O'shea.

I've resigned to losing the orange head, not O'shea please.

yeah, it is true.

losing one player who graduated from the youth team is always sad, let alone losing two.

i hope o'shea stays. his versatility has been a good thing for us.

as for brown, i will not blame him if he moves. he is not playing a lot of games lately, and with us signing jones, he will be further down in the pecking order.

probably the picture of him leaving the medical centre and that he was happy about what happened
