I thought we were signing Varane to cover that position. Jones can play right back, center half and in midfield. So I am guessing if we sell O'Shea then Jones might slot in at right back.

Jones has played in midfield, yes, but he is not a midfielder.

O'Shea has played in midfield for us on a number of occasions, would you class him as a midfielder?

I assure you that Jones is a natural defender, and this is the position he is being bought to play in.

I didn't say Jones was a midfield player John, I said it's arguable that he's been baught to play in that position. Which you could easily argue.

As for you being able to "assure" me that he's been baught to play in defence. You can't assure me of anything mate.

Think about it, even if his long term position is seen in midfield his best way of getting games is in midfield in the short term. We're well stocked for central defenders but not so well stocked in the defensive midfield players.

Can he actually sign any contract with us right now or does he have to wait until July 1st?

The transfer window is open so it's irrelevant. If it wasn't, the deal would be complete but not eligible to play until after July 1st.

Has he played right back for Blackburn?

Number 4 or 6 (when Brown leaves) would be a much better fit for Phil Jones. Number 2 should be given to the first choice right back.

Jones would seem to be perfect for the number 4 unless we are intending to sign another player who can play DM... Then again its just a number, theres not much point reading anything into it

Dislike it when people say, its just a number. You wouldnt say manchester united is just a club, or the kit was just a shirt. They mean something to many people, as do the numbers. I for one cant imagine anyone in the number 18 or 11.

This is something in general, not just about jones and the number 4 might i add.

Then you go and give the number 9 to William Gallas

Sorry but 4 is just a number

Michael Owen is our number 7.

It is just a number.

great signing. our defence are pretty safe for the future now with fabio, rafael, smalling, evans and jones.

i hear somewhere we are going to sign 5 players?

jones, young, de gea, sneijder and sanchez...:drool::drool:

hmm, never saw this coming. Reckon he would be the future of our CB pairing with Smalling,
does this means that we are selling Vidic to Barcelona ???

'Manchester City also looked seriously at Jones but decided £16m was not good value for a player they felt made too many defensive mistakes.'

But they bought Lescott and Toure for more, hmm.

The same article seems to think Smalling cost 19m!!

Ferguson snaps up £17m Jones, then starts to dismantle squad - Transfers, Football - The Independent

A team with Lescott, Toure and Richards at the back and they didn't want Jones because he might make too many defensive mistakes. :wenger:

That's exactly what it means. Vidic is having a medical as we speak, £29m + Messi.

This signing seems odd given that Rio and Vidic still has a few good years ahead, and backups with Smalling and Evans. I mean, he is a good talent, but not an immediate need. Unless we are planning to get Modric with Evans as part exchange, since Spurs are in need of a centreback, i don't think Phil Jones deal is that necessary.

I know this on a good authority that after the dark days of a De Laet-Carrick-Fletcher-Evra back four, we're now determined to stock up at least one centre-half each summer, and we will not stop until we have as many defenders as Spurs have CMs.
