As said before, this is probably Jones's last contract in football and he's probably aware of it himself. Having said that he could have left football with his head held high if he retired prior the end of his contract. Various players did that like for example Van Basten who retired against Milan's will because they simply couldn't believe that someone with such talent is gone. Some even took it to a step further by retiring before they became a burden on their club. I am referring to the likes of Roberto Baggio who retired despite scoring 12 goals and 11 assists in 26 games or Eric Cantona who fecked off the moment SAF mentioned the bench. Sure Jones is nowhere near to that level of player. However he most certainly made equal/more money then them in football and he could afford retiring without becoming a walking/talking meme. Don't take me wrong, I put the blame on the club for giving him that silly contract in the first place. However I can't help asking myself were is Jones's pride in all of that. Is he really that happy to retire knowing that he'll always be remembered as a joke? I mean Gaz still regrets not retiring early and you can see the pain in his eyes whenever he speaks about that (he's not alone the likes of Baresi share the same view). Now these are players who won everything and despite all that, those extra few months still sting on their conscience. What does Jones have to look back at?

Jones is likely not going to have a career in football after he hangs up his boots. I don't blame him for continuing to make money for as long as he can. It's not graceful, but it's also not abnormal

We need to get stricter with these players clinging on, why the feck he's still got the #4 shirt I'll never know

He's got a contract but if he won't leave send him to play with the kids it's that simple.

He is apparently paid about £4.5 a year.
Played around 20 matches since he signed that contract, some of which were as a sub. It all adds up to 1M/match.

Somewhere in Paris, Messi feels jealous.

Absolutely rubbish.

Maguire has reached Euro Finals and won PL’s with Leicester City.

Jones is nothing compared to Maguire even if no one rates him. And his injuries are due to it - just the standard of football and a players fitness.

No he didn’t, he joined after they won the PL

Honestly, I am pretty shit at football, but if Man United offers me 4.5M/year to train with them quarter of the time (with the other time doing nothing), I will sign that contract and stay up to the last day of it.

In the past greater athletes have retired at a younger age due to persistent injuries ruining their career.
We can’t really fault Jones for accepting a new contract or not working to cancel his contract to “help out” United. Let’s face it if anybody was offered 75k a week, unless you have that self awareness to seek out having a profession elsewhere or have that guidance to tell you to give up that dream, you are not going to walk away.
I’m pretty sure with his profile etc. if he retired a few years ago got into coaching or broadcasting with sponsorship deals he would be making almost the same amount of money but with a meaningful career.

I know this sub loves to blame Ole for everything but come on.

The players signing contracts is down to Woody trying to protect assets but failing to realise assets are only assets if they are wanted by others and you can move them on.
Wrong website, friend.

Of course it can, if it pays the remainder of the money owed. Most normal players will take some kind of mutual agreement to move on and play somewhere else though.

So the player has to be in agreement yes?

Which means the club can't just decide to cancel someone's contract unilaterally.

Which was my point.

Who the feck knows. The last 3-4 years have been a big mystery.

Thats whats most frustrating to the fans.
It's not been a mystery at all. You just didn't care. He was injured since just before the pandemic and only got over that massive injury least season.

Remained fit throughout last season and then got injured this summer.

That season when Leicester won PL, Maguire was playing in Championship

What injury was it? Why is he out for so long? Is he even training? What sort of injury takes 2.5 years to recover from?

How the feck did he get injured before preseason even started!?

So he was injured all of last season. Got fit, then somehow injured himself again before preseason tour began?

When is he going to be fit? Whats the timeline?

You must work for the fecking PR team.

His contract expires at the end of this season. If I was Arnold, I'd pay him off and just part ways immediately - he's just bad juju, none needs him around.

Amazing … And he has the guts to taunt fans for their perceived poverty (eating noodles in moms basement)!

Chelsea released Ross Barkley and nothing was made of it.

Why don't we just do the same?

I seriously doubt Phil Jones would agree to any sort of mutual termination without us paying most of his contract.

I'm just hoping we're going down the insurance route to try and recoup all those wages we've paid him over the years for doing nothing.

If he cared about his career he'd have forced a loan move, or a transfer, or agreed to mutually terminate his contract so he could join another club. Any sympathy I may have had for him ran out a long time ago. Not that he needs our sympathy, it's not like the cost of living will be affecting him since he gets paid a fortune to do feck all

If we released him he could sign for another team right? If so we should terminate his contract and pay half his salary on the basis he would get a lump sum payout and then a salary at a new club

We don't have a clue about what really goes on here and whats true or not. I suspect that its a mental health issue of some sort. Maybe the guy is at a really bad place and the club wants to take care of him. I dont know. Woodward and Ole has been out of this club for over a year now and he is still here, so it can be something else then he being a "freeloader"
So they give him 20 million to help him out? Wow glazers best owners ever. No its the shit woodward served up as he thought it was cheaper to resign him, than buy a competent player, because it was an asset that looks good on the balance sheet.

You mean he's like Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies: he's so accident-prone, everyone around him is in danger of becoming collateral damage?

Maybe he wants to retire as a United player, the club that stood by him for years while he became a meme and a mocked figure? People being angry at Jones for his injuries is baffling. Yes, Jones gets a lot of money, but his passion is to play football and he can't because of his injuries.

How does Maguire's imaginary PL medal stack up against Jones's real one?

Bullshit. His passion is a big fecking paycheque, could have went to France but refused I’m sure he could also play in the Championship but decides to stay at United until he’s actually kicked out the door.

That's not how contracts work..

If we wanted to release him, we would have to pay up in full. And given we have to pay him anyway, we are helping him by keeping him at the club with access to our medical staff etc

I'm not sure why some are shitting on the guy, he was offered a daft contract and is well within his rights to see it out. It appears ETH is taking a tougher line than our previous managers and that's good, we needed a cultural reset and toughen up the squad for years, but we can't blame a guy who will more than likely have to retire after this contract for seeing it out.

It's incredible that he is still here to be honest. We are a very poor selling club.
I keep saying that but in this case, it is not up to club (except the fact that we gave him this ridiculous contract). Jones simply doesn't want to go. He is happy collecting money for nothing. He knows that his playing days are finished.
I wouldn't be surprised if he retires next year.

Whoever agreed to prolong his contract should be forced to pay Jones' salary back to the club

Rubbish. If his passion is to play football he could have ask for loan or transfer. His passion and desire to play football is zero. Even if he gets fit, he is not deluded that much that he would expect playing many games while being 5th or 6th option.

He is a leecher who used us as ATM. I mean, fair play to him, many of us would do the same but don't sell me stories about him as a poor guy who loves a club.

I reckon one of the apologists on here IS Phil Jones. He’s certainly got the time on his hands……

Jones got kicked out of the dressing room? That's gonna hurt and probably mean another 3months out injured.

Meh, what he did is no different to what Micah Richards did to Villa in his last two three years, and people here still love him.

Did he touch you inappropriately? Not sure where your anger is coming from. Why do you actually give a feck if he's collecting his paycheck?

You are conveniently skipping the 'because of his injuries' part.

Brilliant decision if true.

I have no issue with Jones continuing to collect his contractually agreed salary - that's the club's stupidity, not his.

However, there's no reason for him to continue to have first team privileges. Standards are important. You earn your place in the dressing room.
