Phil Jones Future | Reports: Observing United academy sessions

It was at CB that season Evans and Jones were the CBs early in the season while Smalling was RB.

just checked our lineups from this season out of curiosity and we still had Ferdinand and Vidic, we played a back four, back three and a back five within first couple of games.. Jones played mainly CB but had some games at RB, which I must remember him from..

I can understand them renewing his contract, but it is far too long a contract. They are seriously overrating his talent.

Bloody hell I thought this was a old thread bump, not a new contract. Utterly baffling. Should never be getting a contract that long, it's just bizarre. It's decisions like this which make me really really worry about the future of this club, it's not in safe hands.

He's been with us almost 8 years and there's not much he shown himself to really be good at other than lunging last ditch challenges which are generally only required because he'd fecked up in the first place.

I've never seen 'it' with him, and his injury record makes it all the more baffling how he's managed to have such a long career with us.

If this contract is in the hope of securing a transfer fee then fair enough, but I'm afraid it's going to mean him getting a testimonial which is just bonkers.

He was promising but injury prone in his first few years here. I remember him shutting down CR and Bale for us in quick succession in a season. Somehow he has never grown into the CB role thereafter and his performances have actually been diminishing. But on the plus side he seems to be remaining fit for a longer time (touch wood!) so maybe he still has time.

I was pretty numbed and traumatized after the Smalling deal in December. Can't say I feel anything about this now.

Now awaiting the 5 + 1 for Darmian now.

That also is if anybody is moronic enough to be willing to pay the relatively high transfer fee (for a broken car) and his wages. I genuinely cannot tell whether people are either that blind to what is happening or they are just deluding themselves to feel a bit better. It's absolutely mad.
100% delusion for me. If the intent is to sell him then 4+1 is too much, that just really means he is valued very highly and possibly(probaably) with a salary bump.
Why would Jones leave ?

He is younger, tougher, faster and he's got some sort of football brain
He is younger, tougher and faster does not make him better though. I'm pretty sure you would see CBs in the lower leagues who are younger, tougher and faster than Lindelof.
How do you deduce 'football brain'?

Some people can not cope with the fact that the people at the club actually rate him.

Surely even Phil Jones himself must think Ed is a moron.

Brilliant news.
If Woodward questions why we are no longer a big club, here's your answer along with other renewals.

Take this to the bank......

We'll spend about £80m this summer. The board will say the whole squad deserves a chance of a full campaign under "Ole's positivity".

Yeah I can see that coming unfortunately.

Unlikely we will be signing a huge CB in the Summer after this. Definitely a low point of the Ole' reign, this makes no sense. You won't win titles with the chuckle brothers at the back, if they were found out after three managers what makes this one different. I love the job Ole is doing but this is an incredible mistake. Calamity Jones is not near good enough, can't be trusted. He will let us down on the important stage, like he's done so many times. Good game, average one, own goal/does a huge mistake, injured. Rinse and repeat. Awful decision!
I really don't trust this board in the Summer.

People thinking this will make him easier to sell and puts us in a better position to shift him are beyond clueless. Players of his age and injury record we are always going to make a loss on, it's just how it is. But now we're in an awful position, sometimes you just have to laugh.

No it isn't. Conversely, I'll ask if his signing a 5 year deal not evidence enough of Jones not being up for sale? Only one of those two narratives have any actual, measurable substance, and it ain't yours.

He's a decent back up centre back. On the proviso we bring in another CB to start alongside Lindelof, that's nothing wrong with offering him a contact, protecting our assets, and having an experienced, decent CB as a back up option.

Well my 5 million quid Bic pen is not for sale either.

As for his amazing experience I wonder how it actually translates to what we get from him. Is his experience helping him in either staying fit or not making idiotic mistakes year in year out?

This thread will be fun to read once we end up signing no starting XI centre back come summer but at least we'll have Phil Jones for the next 5 years with us, available every 5th match, for 5 matches, 3 of which will be needed for him to get 'match fit'. Rinse, repeat, just like the last 8(?) years.

The fact they actually rate him is the big problem. It isn't because they rate him, he is easy to resign, he will be desperate to stay here, big money, be injured for ages for big money, sit on the bench for big money. Ideal.

We were hardly gonna let him go on a free.

Not sure what fuss is.

We need one more starting Cb maybe 2 and then we can sell 5th 6thnchoice in order.

Jones and Smalling nailed down on long term deals. That’s the centre of our defence sorted for the next few years.

Definitely a low point of the Ole' reign

I doubt Ole takes this decision, has to be Woodward. And given that he is English, better than Rojo and can fill the backup role, and has potential to improve in future, giving a new contract is quite reasonable. The contract for 4 years is a bit excessive though.

Besides Jones could just decide to refuse all the clubs interested in him and simply stay for a long time.

It is hard to understand why he is so rated. He is average at best when he isn't injured.
Usually you see these extensions for top class players.
He won the league with us. Funny how after all the decent defenders left we are seeing all his frailties.

There will no new CB next summer. Its clear now with this renewal.
And people here baffling why Woody needs to step down.

I really do not think the CB is as big of a problem as people make it out to be. And unless we get someone like De Ligt I really do not know they are great signings out there at CB.

Potential to improve in the future ? You believe that ?

We couldn't get rid of Darmian for peanuts, how on earth do you think we will get shot of a 4+1 contract on big money?

Unlikely since he has actually been worsening in recent years. But initially he did show quite a bit of promise. Given that he hasn't even turned 27 yet, maybe 10% chance - who knows!

Yeah yeah, but when will the man get his own stand like Ferguson? "The Phil Jones Quadrant"

The Hargreaves Medical Center I believe is already named.

Think it's an okay deal tbf. In Solskjær's tactics he is 2/3 choice, as Smalling cannot pass the ball longer than 3 yards. He is however injury prone and has the occational brainfart in him. Hope he gets rid of some of his problems and becomes a reliable backup, and if not we can sell him for a decent fee with him being English and all.

Absolute joke.

He should of been one of the many to leave this summer..

Ole, probably the next permanent Utd mgr recently declared he's happy with the squad, que Woodward extending contracts thus saving the Glazers the outlay on replacing them in the summer, there might be 1 or 2 new signings and that is that, great business by the top 4 seeking owners!

It'd only make sense if we kept him for one more season as backup.

  • Sign a top CB to partner Lindelof.
  • We loan Tuanzebe to a PL team and get rid of Rojo this season.
Season after next he leaves with Tuanzebe taking his spot.

I can understand that the 4+1 is a stretch for such an injury prone player, but other than that I do not see why people are complaining so much.
No, Jones is not a world class defender. Might have had the talent but has been injured for to much to be able to develop into that. I never heard the man complain and he is a decent player who is fine with his squad status.

If we would have to dump either Jones or Smalling, I would see Jones as the better fit as I do not see Smalling accepting a role as the number 4 or 5 for his position for to long. Other than that, Smalling is probably easier to sell.

If we are able to land a top quality CB, then we will start the season with the signing, Lindelof, Bailly, Jones and hopefully Tuanzebe. What is wrong with that?

When we had top center backs like Stam, Ferdinand and Vidic, they had backups like Brown, O'Shea and Evans. If the though behind the extention is that Jones is to take the role like those players did back then, I see nothing wrong with that. You can't see he is worse then those 3 were.

The Smalling extension made sense. He's a decent squad player to have. But this worries me. If it was a 2 year deal with a year option, just to move him on for a bit of cash, fine. But 4 years with another year as an option strikes me as he's here to stay.

Even squad options need to be of a certain quality. And they need to be fit enough to play.

Seems like lack of ambition.
