fecking ridiculous, keep telling yourselves that Woodward's doing a brilliant job though.

And people were losing their shit over Young's one year contract, laughable.

People really need to stop hating our players, it's embarrassing.

Jones is one of the only remaining squad players who has a PL to his name, along with other trophies.
It is not hate. Nobody hates Jones. Nobody. It is "hate" in terms that we all think that he is not good enough for us and decisions like this are not helping us to go forward and fight for title.

So Rojo out, Tuanzebe in then? Or do we sell Bailly to make space for a new CB?

Who cares? Jose Mourinho had plenty of trophies to his name but made a mess of the club.

Inevitable. He is a starter for us. We'd have been stupid to let him leave for free.
A toast to five more years.

Honest to god what a joke, looked like we had turned a corner getting rid of Fellani but christ 4 and a half years of more Phil Jones! Hopefully he is 5th choice next year and we see him in the league cup alone, the man is bob!

People also need to stop confusing hate with not thinking a player is good enough for us nor deserves a new contract.

Jones is 26 and is far from the tail end of his career. He's a solid squad option.
That's a much better argument than saying because he's an EPL winner. From the club's pov, it's obviously sensible. But over the last years, he's even struggled to be a reliable squad option.

Agreed. Cue the 'Rashford needs to go out on loan', 'Lingard is a Championship player' 'Young is an embarrassment' idiots who seem to revel in hating on our team.

Also it could just be to do with our homegrown qouta, where does that currently sit?

Jones
Pogba
Lukaku
Rashford
Smalling
Grant
Lingard
Pereira
Young
Shaw
Mensah
McTominay
Tuanzebe

He's already probably our fourth best centre back, just scraping ahead of Rojo, despite most acknowledging it as being a position we really need to strengthen. I don't hate Jones, I hope he does well for us if he plays, but I'm not sure he's good enough and given his injury record and the money he's going to be on it would surely be better to move him on along with the likes of Valencia, Darmian and Rojo.

I think this is just another case of the club protecting the value of its assets.

Like with Fellaini last summer, we could have let him go for free but tied him down to a contract, which a lot of people weren't happy about. 6 months later, we've sold him for £10m, take a bit away from that for his wages and we still have an extra £7-8m to use for transfers which we could have lost.

Hopefully we move Jones on in the summer (Rojo too) and have a bit more £££ to play with

Have to say, it's quite funny to see the meltdowns here. if you look at it logistically it makes sense.

We could either let him go for free, or, we could keep an English defender who we have spent over six years trying to train and improve, who should be entering the prime of his career. And if he's still not good enough, flog him off for a good sum of money (again, cause he's English).

An expected move tbh. The club will make more money selling Bailly and Rojo than letting Jones leave on a free. Also, not saying Jones is great but not seen anything from Bailly or Rojo to convince that they are any better.

No he isn't though, a player who's injured half of his career at a club cannot be called a 'solid squad option' even if he's just a 'squad option'. Those two cannot go together. He's fecking injury prone beyond belief, nevermind his constant 'Jones moments'.

4+1 is some kind of a fecking sick joke, nobody was willing to take him given his injury record and questionable ability (I mean, speak of ability when you make so many idiotic mistakes as he does) and now we add another obstacle to that with the transfer fee somebody insane enough would be willing to pay.

I mean it makes sense if the club want to sell him.. letting him walk for free was never a good idea.

But if we have any plans of having him in the first team then we are bonkers. He's nowhere near the best in the league. He's 4th best in our squad already IMO.

If you think the meltdown is bad on here you should check out the comments beneath the announcement on Twitter!

I’ve always maintained there’s a quality CB in there somewhere and he’s young(ish) so might as well go all in and back this decision by the club.

Care to provide some evidence of this?

Solskjaer on Jones' new deal
Here’s what Solskjaer has said about Jones’ new deal :

“Phil knows what it takes to be a Manchester United player, he has won the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League and is now one of the senior players within the team.

“He is coming up to his 27th birthday and entering into his prime years as a centre half. We are delighted Phil has committed his future to the club.”

Ole must think he and his coaches can help him cut out the total brainfartery. If Jones can do that there's a good, useful player there without doubt. It's just too big an if for me, and I hope while this deal is in place we'll still be open to good offers to move him on.

No chance has Bailly looked better than him based on their respective United careers so far.

I’ve always maintained there’s a quality CB in there somewhere and he’s young(ish) so have no problem at all with this decision by the club.
Twitter is always a shitfest to be fair.

I've always been of a similar opinion, there is a talented player in there, we've seen it before, though admittedly as the years go on that hope in me dwindles more and more. We've also seen a lot of defenders who've struggled in their twenties turn into much better players once they hit 27/28, so if he did do that somewhere else after us putting up with some of the shite we've seen from him since he signed for us, I'd be pretty fecked off about it.

Also, if it's a choice between Bailly, Jones, and Rojo, I'd keep Jones. Cause the other two are properly shite, like, properly properly useless.

That's outrageous. Just saw it on my timeline.

How is this man still at the club?

He is at least third best among our CBs, is still fairly young and has been very good under Ole. Provided he is on a sensible wage, then a 4+1 years contract is a very good deal for us. Letting him go for free would have weakened us when there are more unreliable CBs at the club who we'd be better off shipping out for decent fees before Jones.

Mediocrity being rewarded, another reason why we don't compete for the big trophies anymore, also points to another frugal summer ahead in the transfer window.

He's a good defender whos prone to a brain fart every now and again. Its his injury record that's bad. As a back up player he will be handy as the market is crazy. To buy another Phil Jones type player now would cost more than his new contract is worth.

Currently our starting CB and not exactly surprising we didn’t want to let an England international aged 26 go on a free. I’d probably have preferred a shorter contract and I’d hope, given his injury record, that he’s still on relatively low wages for our squad, but overall the right move.

Dear Ed Woodward

Since the club is handing out contracts to anything with a heartbeat, is there any way I can get one too?

Thanks xx

Care to provide some evidence of this?

Is him being here despite all his faults and injures for so long enough or do I need to cite lack of any transfer gossip stories linking him to anybody whereas your Smallings or Baillys have been linked to other clubs for years now?

I mean other than that is my guess work but it could also be his amazing quality that he brings to the squad that we're shutting any possible transfers as soon as the idea pops up from 'rival' clubs.
