Tbf, not things tonight were bad...

At least we got another great meme from him. He never disappoints when it comes to that.

Can we end the ridiculous narrative that he's "great when fit" now, please? He really, really isn't.

For some reason with Jones though, all it takes is for him to string two decent games together and people quickly forget just how many times his utter stupidity and error proneness has cost us in the past.

No doubt he'll have a couple of good matches in a few weeks time against mid-table opposition and the cries of "best defender when fit" will begin again. It's like a lot of our fans have amnesia with this guy.

The Phil Jones pattern.

Game 1 - Great game.
Game 2 - Decent game with mistake.
Game 3 - Possible own goal or generally gets turned inside out.
Game 4 - Injuries himself 10 minutes after doing a funny face while we are losing.
Spot on.

I wish he played for someone else so I could truly laugh at the mess he is on the pitch.

people blaming Jones for the second goal now? sweet jesus...

He saved a 100% certain goal. Not his fault Smalling and DeGea were slow as feck to react.

He saved shit. A top class CB clears that ball first time and it's no drama. A Phil Jones makes a mess out of it and let's the ball bounce in front of the GK.

He just doesn't know how to contest a ball in the air. He must have the poorest leap I've ever seen from a CB, just doesn't get any elevation at all and he isn't that tall anyway.

In the middle of that, you can see a terrible attempt at heading the ball away.

But he wins more in the air than Bailly and Lindelof, so thats a really weird post. Only Smalling wins more than he does for us

Jones challenges for the ball in the air denying a free header. He doesnt win it but the attacker doesnt get full purchase on it and to do whatever they like with it. Thats the most important thing. Would have been great if he could win the header but that arent many defenders who win almost all their headers and De Gea should have done much better

Equally a top class GK doesn't kneel down and pull out of the challenge.

Yeah but Lindelof and Bailly are awful in the air. I don't think it's much of an achievement being better than them.

Fair enough but you said he has the poorest leap for a CB, so I dont see how thats the case playing in the same team as those two :D

Bailly actually has a decent leap IMO. His timing and positioning is just shit, which makes it completely useless.

Jones on the other hand looks like he's jumping with a sack of bricks on his back whilst being locked in a straight jacket. Vidic is the perfect example of a CB knowing how how to jump, it was springy and smooth and on top of that his timing was impeccable.

Did we give him a new contract cause we want him to stay or just so we could get a bit of money for him when West Ham make a bid? Jones +40 million for Rice perhaps?

No club is that idiotic to pay for Jones. Only chance was him leaving on free. Now we're screwed.

Im still completely perplexed on the logic of giving him a new lucrative contract considering;

a) how often the lad is injured
b) he's awful

I mean, is the idea to sell him on? Or do they actually think he's going to come good eventually? Because its pretty obvious at this stage thats not happening.

Im seriously worried about the idea of Messi coming up against him next week. (saying that, the idea of Smalling doesn't settle my nerves any better)

He has played well and yet people want to jump on him over nothing again. Key player to stop Messi should be Jones for us.

Where did he kneel down and pull out of a challenge, and since when are people questioning whether David De Gea is a top class GK? Are some of you watching football from yesterday?

He's thrash and the second goal was his and De Gea's fault. Him, Rojo, Young & Valencia need to ride out in the summer. This shit is going on far too long now. Bring in Toby and Koulibaly

He won’t go though. We just extended his deal, he’s here to stay.

I’m not sure you can sell him that easily considering the wages he is likely to be on.

A top 6 team will not touch him and teams below cannot really afford to spend £100k a week on a player who will maybe be available for 25-30 games a season.

We are stuck with him for next 4 years. Everyone better get used to it.

Woodward and Ole didn't want to get rid of him. My reasoning would be Ole doesn't want to fire a SAF player, an English player at that.
I had tried to understand why Young and Jones and the only logical conclusion for me is this is what Ed and Ole want and the only reason I find it illogical is because my ambition for the team is different from the owners and the club management.

I didn't want us to give him a new contract, but the reasons may be:

- He is a homegrown and still a relatively young player at 27.
- He is one of the two who can play as LCB
- None of the three CB's we have signed have shown themselves to be significantly better than him. In fact, Rojo and Bailly have proved to be utter trash.
- Being English, we can still command a decent fee for him if our new CB we buy and Lindelof can settle in properly next season. May be Tuanzebe will be ready to step-up after another loan spell next season.

How is it that Bailly has shown he’s utter trash while Jones more reliable? It’s like we count only Bailly’s mistake while we overlook how many times has Phil Jones cost us. I’d rather have Bailly than Jones.

I have a theory that some people are influenced by his time under SAF, this is why they constantly talk about him being 'our best defender when fit' nonsense.

Phil Jones cost us a cup final last season, but it has been erased from people's memories because he performs against cannon fodder teams.

Well said and spot on.

Great, so you were semi pro then, which is what I was, as a centre back. So yes, I've had professional coaching too, played alongside internationals, PL and CL winners etc in their latter years. All in the position we're discussing here, which makes me pretty confident I can see when we have players that dont match the standards we used to have. Maybe you were coached in a different position but the way you talk on here you'd think you were Franco Baresi.
And you blamed all your teammates for when you kicked the ball out under no pressure? You've been called out several times by several posters because your analysis of defensive positioning is atrocious. God help whatever idiot paid money to have you defend.

OK Franco Baresi  Surprised you returned to this after Jones's last outing. This poster has it spot on:

Bailly had a handful of good games when he started but has been a calamity since then. Looks lost most of the time he plays. Takes unnecessary risks and is a waiting red card. Very bad for a 2nd season running.

Bailly had a torrid time with injuries last season, same as now. He has been no more of a disaster than Phil Jones. As another poster already stated, Jones has cost us so many high profile games and should be down the pecking order only in front of Rojo who is a disaster himself.

It boggles the mind when someone can talk of Bailly as a disaster and not say the same for Jones. Jones takes the no nonsense approach so far that he comes off as fearful. Bailly does the opposite, he has no fear and takes ridiculous risks. Both play without control but in a different state of mind.

I disagree. Bailly has looked like a deer in headlights for the most part. Jones at least knows how to defend, even though he has mistakes in him. He is better on the ball too.

If it was up to me, all three would be out of the club. However, since we have many needs, I don't mind us getting rid of Rojo and Bailly this summer & keeping Jones as the 4th choice. Then the summer after we can integrate Tuanzebe into the squad and get rid of Jones.

Jones typifies our problem here, players not particularly bad but seem to stagnate and not improve either. Jones and Smalling have had their chances but absolutely no where where we would have thought they should given how long they have been here hence the constant links to CB's.

Bailly a deer in headlights? Bailly can be many things but that "deer in the headlights" is a spot on description for Phil Jones type of defending. Bailly hasn't managed a run of games due to whatever reason, but has demonstrated that he can be very good CB and I'd rather keep him than Jones who's been here forever and always managed to stay the same calamity CB. I sincerely can't remember as much high profile mistake by Bailly. I do remember his own goal against Pool last season, but in the same time he was great in everything Pool threw at us. Jones on the other hand, Christ you can make a movie of his howlers.
