As I always say, if he was fit and played consistent, he'd be a top centre back, in my opinion. Was my MOTM tonight. Absolute warrior!

Put him in midfield and he will play a lot better than Matic any day

Can I just remind everyone that with Jones n Smalling playing most games for the last 3 years we've had the best or second best defence in the division.

This year everyone's new favourite player, Lindelof, has come in and we've kept 2 clean sheets in 13 games. I'm sorry boys but he's the biggest change to our defence this season and we now look like we can't defend at all. Is it a coincidence? I don't think it is. I also think his recent upturn in form has been widely overblown. He's been better because quite frankly he was appalling before that.

None of them are top drawer though. I still think Bailly is the best of the bunch and then Smalling. Smalling is poor on the ball but defensively he's not as bad as some say he is.
This ^^^^ spot on.

Just happy he's not injured and didn't cause a penalty.

His long breaks from football increasing the risk but thankfully not against Young Boys.

What??!?!
You know, except when he puts the ball in the wrong net and assaults players for a penalty. He’s quite consistent at defending otherwise. Just happens to also be consistent at being injured

Anyone getting their hopes up over Jones playing one good game is truly insane. I give him 5 more games at the absolute max before he hurts himself again after scoring an own goal or gifting the opposition a goal.

Phil jones never plays a bad game as a defender might be one of the most ludicrous things I've ever seen posted on the caf.

It was only a few months ago he fecking cost us the FA Cup Final

I love the comical nature of Jones
Had a very decent performance esp. getting forward

Hope he stays fit and stays away from brain splurges which he is prone to

He had a cross tonight that I thought had gone out and I put my head in my hands, when I looked back it was still in on te other side of the pitch, most entertaining thing we did all game.

It was a bad mistake, but better defenders than him have and will again be made to look foolish by Eden Hazard.

But he is hardly ever fit and because of that he hardly ever plays consistent matches... He might have had the potential to be a top centre back if he would have been fit, played consistent AND wasnt prone to having ''brainfart moments'' like diving into tackles when it isnt needed at all while in his own box for example.

He didnt become what Ferguson hoped he would become and has basically been stealing his weekly wages for most of his United career. Sell/get rid and use his wages for a better CB who can stay fit.

The annual Phil Jones cycle has started. In the 5 upcoming games, he will have 3 good performances, 1 mediocre and 1 where he gets injured.

Rinse and repeat. Shame as he's a very good defender but you can't trust him.

Good game Philip!! i hope you are fit enough to keep playing.

I never get tired of saying this:

Our best performances since Moyes took over, have been with Jones on the side. Him and Smalling make a more than decent CB pairing, specially when our midfield shows up to the games. Playing with a invisible midfield is nerve wrecking for any defender.

I cannot believe that after 7 and a half years of this shit we still have people thinking "oh if he can just stay fit and strong".

It's never going to happen. Why do people still fall for this every time he has a decent game?

He's a good defender. Not great, and fitness issues. But good. Smalling and Jones is a solid but unspectacular partnership but its proven to be good enough most of the time

He coped well with the equivalent of a chanpionship side. The problem is when we play Chelsea or Spurs and he becomes a liability.

Played really well tonight, both at CB and RB. You know he can go on a run of games and put in 7+ out of 10 but then you also know somewhere down the line there's a 2/10 and costs us a game.

Fair to say that if Lindelof put in that performance, some people would have hailed it as the second coming of Jesus Christ

This 100%. No point getting your hopes up after 1 game. He will give you 6 or 7 solid games maximum and then let you down inevitably

He's scored 2 own goals in his entire career, yet some are trying to make out it happens all the time. Even Maldini scored own goals and made mistakes. Why are some fans just critical of everyone in our team? They just don't seem to be able to enjoy a player having a good game.

I am always amazed by all the seemingly impossible ways he manage to put his body in situations where anyone easily could get injured. He is like a specialist. Runs at full speed, hits an invisible brick wall and sort of jumps in the air while trying to do a yoga position when landing.

Then he'll gift the opposition a goal. Doesn't really matter. He's never going to change and after 7 years I'm tired of it to the point that I can't even bother getting excited when he plays well. I truly hope he proves me wrong, but, he almost definitely will not.

Yep so you’re one of those people who don’t enjoy certain players having a decent game. Good on ya.

Good performance, works well with Smalling. Watching the game just expecting him to break though, not harsh. Just reality.

Jones was our second best central defender last season. Indeed, for the first half of that season he was arguably our best. I find it strange that after years of him being over-rated on here and myself being one of the few who said he wasn't good enough, now I'm doing the opposite and defending him on here from people going overboard with his negatives.

Don't get me wrong, I still want him sold because he simply can't be relied upon whatsoever and he's still not good enough at the end of the day. But over the last 18 months he has been better than Bailly, Rojo and Lindelof. He has had a bad patch since the end of last season, but so has Bailly.

He is a good defender, probably our second most talented after Smalling. He is just perennially injured and makes high profile errors.

Sheesh has he been here that long!? Time flies.

He is twice the player of Lindelof when fit.

If you mean by mass, then agree. If he were to trim down some he'd probably get injured half as often too. And I mean that seriously, no jest. I've always felt many of his injuries might have been abided with a different kind of training and eating regime to get him leaner and more flexible.

Some posters just decide certain players are dead to them. No matter how they play, they'll never give them credit. Sometimes they'll go quiet while the player is doing well and then eventually when that player makes a mistake, they come out of the woodward to say "See! I called it!". Why? Because its seemingly more enjoyable for them to be seen as "right" than for our players to play well.

We all know what will happen and what posts will be made here. Hes either gonna get an injury or make a mistake diving in through his aggression (or do both at the same time).

Its a shame cos I would have liked to have seen him get an injury free run in our team. When he first came in, he used to push on with the ball despite being a CB (well the times he played at CB, and then RB, and then DM...)

Please just fecking stay fit until at least Lindelof is back.
